French Dowel Rolling PinOne of two J.K. Adams pins chosen as Good Housekeeping’s Best Rolling Pins on the market, our French Tapered Rolling Pin has been a favorite of bakers for generations. The French-style tapered design make this lighter-weight pin easy to maneuver while still providing enough substance to make easy work of any rolling task. Lovely Rolling PinOur Lovely Rolling Pin series was developed by Bob and Gina Hartwig, the bakers and owners of Chicago's own Lovely: A Bake Shop. Slight indentations on the edges of the pin ensure that your dough is rolled to a perfect, even thickness every time. Our two professional 24" pins deliver a dough thickness of 1/8" and 1/4". On our 24" pins the roll out space is 18". Our 18" pin provides a thickness of 1/4" with a roll out space of 13". Watch the video to see the unique Lovely Rolling Pin in action. |
Patisserie Rolling PinThe J.K. Adams name has been synonymous with high quality rolling pins for over 10 years. We continued that tradition by adding our Patisserie Rolling Pins, designed for professional bakers. 1. The sticker. Perhaps the company has responded to the complaints about the sticker being difficult to remove by changing the adhesive, but I had no significant problem removing the sticker. It is true that it did not come off easily and must be removed with some care, but I did not find it especially difficult to do. I carefully raised one corner with my finger nail until I had enough lifted to grab the label with my fingers. I then very slowly and carefully pulled the sticker off, pulling it back over its own face side. The sticker came off in one piece for me with no difficulty. There was a darkish mark on the pin where the sticker had been, but it was not at all tacky to the touch. I rubbed it with my thumb and it lightened significantly. I expect the dark patch to simply disappear over time with use. It may be that the adhesive is more of a problem on older stock items if the adhesive hardens with age. If that is the case, I would refer those interested to read the several reviews in which owners have found successful methods for removing the sticker. Also, the label was at one side of the face of my pin, where I place my hands in using it, so the label would not have been an issue (except, perhaps, aesthetically) even if I had left it on.
2. The rough texture. Those who said that the pin is not well finished, likely are not bakers who have used a rolling pin of this type. It is deliberately left with a slightly rough finish, so it will better hold the flour that is used to "dust" the pin to prevent it sticking to dough when rolling it. Again, it is perfectly made, and functions perfectly, for the job it is intended.
This is a great product, and potential purchasers should buy it without reservation.
Incidentally, for those so interested, I have found that the Wilton Fondant 20-inch Rolling Pin Guide Rings are a tight, but functional, fit for this rolling pin. They may be found at: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000PCAIUA?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
I ordered this from Amazon instead of J.K. Adams because of free shipping. In some ways that's good and bad. When the rolling pin arrived it was in a 40" x 9" x 8" box?! Anyway, I opened it up and there was plenty of brown paper but was only luck it did not get damaged, because the pin was free in there.
But I was a bit angry when I saw that gorgeous piece of wood and feeling it and when I turned it I found a sticker on the main surface of the dowel!!! I tried to peel it off and it was one of those kind that tear and stay no matter what you do. I panicked and called J.K. Adams. Calmly explaining how I ordered from Amazon for free shipping and it's a gorgeous piece of wood but there's a sticker on the main part of the sticker... the woman actually gasped when she heard about the sticker. She all ready started consulting with her co-worker on how to remedy the situation. I didn't even have to ask! She gave me 3 viable options and I started with the one that seemed the least dangerous for the wood. She suggested a soft rag and rubbing the sticker with mineral oil. It got the sticker off and I primed it as she instructed.
I went back later to check on it and there was still a residue. Option B: one of those green kitchen scrubby things. Thank goodness that worked! and I again primed the dowel with more mineral oil and it was finally satisfied then. It did soak up a lot of mineral oil, being raw wood.
But I have wiped it down and have it setting on the counter and will be able to put it away until baking day. It truly is a gorgeous hunk of wood! And I was holding it as if using it, and for me, it's the perfect length, width and weight. Now that I know the quality of J.K. Adams, I plan on getting one of cutting boards to add to my culinary arsenal.

Nice hefty weight too, but too heavy (like marble rolling pins)
Easy to clean
