IKAT
Ikat is a dyeing technique by binding yarns with tight wrappings on certain parts of them and then dyeing them. The wrappings protect the yarns' original color during the dyeing process. The contrast between the dyed and undyed parts forms the pattern. This process may be repeated multiple times to create complex multicolored patterns. After the dyeing process is finished, and the yarns have dried, all the bindings are removed and the yarns are woven into cloth.
The word “ikat” comes from the Indonesian language word, which means “to tie” or “to bind”. This term was introduced into European textile vocabulary in the early 20th century when Dutch scholars began to study textile traditions of the East Indies archipelago (today Indonesia). Ikat is now a generic English loanword used to describe the dye technique and the cloth itself regardless of where the fabric was produced or how it is patterned.
Because the pattern is made before the yarns are woven, the weavers have to line up the dyed yarns carefully so that the pattern comes out in the finished cloth. Of course, making the pattern come out perfectly is very difficult. Therefore, the characteristic of ikat clothes is a blurred pattern, and the manufacturing process takes months to years. But, the Indonesian ikat is known for a high degree of ikat alignment. The blurriness is reduced by using finer yarns and by the weavers' skill.
There are many types of ikat. Some of them are warp ikat, weft ikat, and double ikat. In Indonesia, warp ikat clothes are made by the Dayaks, Torajans, Bataks, and other tribes in Kalimantan, Sumatra, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Java. Double ikat is only produced in India, Japan, and Indonesia. In Indonesia, double ikat is only woven in the Bali Aga village of Tenganan Pegeringsingan in Bali, and it is known as “geringsing”. Geringsing clothes are worn for specific ceremonies in Tenganan. Outside Tenganan, geringsing is treasured as they are purported to have magical powers.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- On characteristic of hand-dyed clothes, wash ikats separately from other items as you may experience some dye bleeding in the first few washes.
- Dry cleaning and hand washing are highly recommended. For machine washing, select a delicate or gentle cycle.
- Do not use harsh detergent, chlorine bleach, or color brightener. Use mild washing detergent in liquid, not in powder form. Baby soap, shampoo, and natural laundry soapnut (Sapindus rarak) are highly recommended.
- Do not wring with excessive twisting. It may deform the ikats.
- Avoid direct sunlight. Hang dry ikats under shade to maintain the richness of color.
- Iron ikats on low heat. Use a thin cloth as a layer so the iron does not contact with them directly.
- When you are not using the ikats, store them in a dry closet in the roll form or hang them on a hanger.
