Editorial Reviews

Throughout his six-decade long career, Dr. John embodied a near-mythic multitude of musical identities: Global Ambassador of New Orleans Funk, Jazz, and R&B, visionary bluesman, rock n' roll innovator, and a massively revered high priest of psychedelic voodoo. Things Happen That Way, his final studio album, adds another dimension to his musicality: a lifelong affinity for Country & Western. It's a glorious farewell from one of the most essential figures in music history.

A few weeks after Dr. John's passing, it was reported that he was working on this album shortly before he died and like with David Bowie's Blackstar, he knew his end was coming while he was working on the album.

The music isn't melancholy, on the contrary, Dr John's albums are usually a celebration to me. The only indication a listener may have that Dr John is sensing his end is the song selections "Funny How Time is Slipping Away", "End of the Line" and the title track are indicators but they aren't weepy or mournful.

Dr John's voice has a little more of a strain than in his prime but he reaches the notes. I am glad this album stands up well without it having a depressive cloud hanging over it. That just would not fit. I worried it would be like Bowie's last album. That could have been interpreted as something greater than a swan song but so few do. Or have the pain in Neil Young's Tonight's the Night. Sure, they score points for being brutally real in terms of naked emotion but that would be out of character for Mac Rebennack who did venture in that territory as a young man with Babylon, his most polarizing album. As I said, his music is a celebration. Maybe not the wild mardi gras day of years ago, but an easy afternoon in the Louisiana sunshine.

A fitting coda and it was everything I hoped it would be. I enjoyed all 39 minutes and have done so 4 times since the album dropped 3 days ago.

Listening to the Doctor’s last album generates very mixed feelings. For those who know gris gris… get this album. He knocks it out, albeit from a constrained place. For those of you who dont know Mac’s music, it is an excellent production, some great tracks and some oddities. I won’t listen to it a lot- too hard emotionally. But I will pull it out when I want to be reflective…

This CD became one of my favorite Dr. John's albums. Partly, because it the last one, but mostly because it is very very good.
    Thank you, Dr. John.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. John che sparge scaglie di malinconia e di bellezza. Bel disco postumo.
Reviewed in Italy on October 1, 2022
Incisione superba, musicisti superbi.
