Bauhaus on Tour

Few festival sets rival the one that gothic rock legends Bauhaus unveiled at Coachella in 2005. As the gig started, vocalist Peter Murphy was lowered from the top of the stage while hanging upside down, like a vampire bat, as the musicians — guitarist Daniel Ash, bassist David J and drummer Kevin Haskins — launched into the group's signature song and debut single, "Bela Lugosi's Dead." This sort of over-the-top melodrama isn't out of the ordinary for the quartet: Bauhaus concerts are immersive experiences dominated by dark, aggressive music, an intense light show and haunting vocals.

The quartet toured steadily in the early '80s before splitting in 1983, but reunited after 15 years away for 1998's Resurrection Tour. After another break, the band followed up their Coachella appearance with more touring, including a 2006 tour with Nine Inch Nails. In 2019, Bauhaus reunited for several shows in Los Angeles, which sold out quickly, and brought crowds to capacity at Tabernacle.

Bauhaus in Concert

A trio of childhood friends — Daniel Ash and brothers David J and Kevin Haskins — formed Bauhaus in 1978 with another longtime pal, Peter Murphy. The Northampton, England–based band wasted no time hitting the studio. In fact, their first session yielded "Bela Lugosi's Dead," which received radio support and was a chart success. As a result, Bauhaus inked a record deal with 4AD, which released the band's stark 1980 debut full-length, In the Flat Field.

The quartet proceeded to release a studio album a year until their 1983 breakup, with 1982's The Sky's Gone Out even landing in the Top 5 of the UK album charts. Although known for dark post-punk music, Bauhaus paired grinding guitars and ominous basslines with influences from other genres, including funk, reggae and glam. In a nod to their eclectic influences, Bauhaus also worked up a repertoire of covers, including T. Rex's "Telegram Sam" and David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust." The latter was their biggest UK hit, peaking at No. 15 on the singles chart. Bauhaus continued this covers trend during subsequent reunions. In 2006, they worked up Joy Division's "Transmission" live, which was eventually followed by a new studio album, 2008's Go Away White.

    Best Non-Show ever!

by X The man with the cancelled eyes on 9/27/22

Awesome non-show due to a stint at rehab. Truly a five star music fest! Great non-ticket prices! The refund was the heaviest of tracks! Looking forward to not seeing them again in the future!

    Stellar Performances

Vinsanto set the literal stage with his theatrical and torchy array of songs. An artist I was previously unfamiliar with, I left a fan. Bauhaus looked and sounded great, playing some lesser known cuts in among the hits. Each member looked and sounded superb. A show I was so very glad I attended, one for the books.

    Awesome show! Lame public

by SVS on 5/25/22The Masonic - San Francisco

Bauhaus just keeps getting better and better with their shows. Very Shakespearean and wild. The only downside was the audience. A neutered public. Most people just standing up, nothing wild, just watching. I had to lit a joint so a couple of people around me could do the same. Only a handful were dancing and rockin the experience.

    WOW! Just WOW!

by SSH68 on 5/24/22The Masonic - San Francisco

This was an ELECTRIFYING show...honestly, it ranks in my top 3 favorites of all time. I kept thinking to myself, "this is LIVE!!!" Peter, Daniel, David J and Kevin sound great. The only criticism, and I am nitpicking, is it was too short. They played just under 75 mins. I don't know how Peter Murphy can still sing the way he does, and Daniel, David J., and Kevin (!) seem to be at the top of their game in their 60's. Do yourself a favor and see them, even if you're not familiar with their catalog. You won't be disappointed.

    Bauhaus

by Tori Mero on 12/4/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

Bauhaus put on a fantastic show! I really appreciated the extension of the normal stage at the Hollywood Palladium. Peter Murphy had more access to the audience this way and those who were on the balcony had opportunities to see him better. Wonderful display with the throwing of the rose petals. An absolutely wonderful show with the exception of a few instances of microphone feedback.

    Best Live Performers!

by Jen on 12/4/19Hollywood Palladium - Hollywood

There is something about seeing Bauhaus live that cannot be captured in a YouTube video or written review. It’s just a cool vibe and energy that Peter Murphy has, along with his captivating voice, that makes it a Supernatural experience. His different outfits, gestures and instruments keeps it exciting. Murphy is also an expert at working the stage and giving everyone a good photo opportunity by going far right or left as close to the audience as possible. The Palladium was a good venue but I have to say, wine in a can for $20? Can’t we do better? Some of us older fans would appreciate a semi-decent wine out of a bottle on a Sunday night. What’s more goth than a glass of red?
