Sigur Rós on Tour

In 2022, Sigur Rós announced the opening dates of their first world tour in five years and hinted at the new album they've been silently working on in the studio -- the first of their albums to be released since 2013's Kveikur. The forthcoming record was quickly hailed as one of the most anticipated releases of the year, with an international community of fans always eager to hear what the experimental ensemble comes up with next. They say good things come to those who wait. And nearly a decade since their last album dropped, Sigur Rós is sure to deliver a live show that exceeds all expectations, airing never-before-heard songs alongside material drawn from their acclaimed 25-year discography. Wherever they play, the Reykjavík, Iceland, natives transcend language through their music. They make songs for which there are no words but rather an evocation of deep feeling, inspiration and delight. Wherever you catch Sigur Rós on tour -- Australia, Mexico, the United States, or anywhere else -- it makes no difference what language you speak or whether you can understand Jónsi's melodic, Icelandic lyrics. In fact, all the songs off their Grammy-nominated 2002 album ( ) were sung in a made-up language, leaving listeners to interpret their own meaning of the title-less songs that they could then transcribe in the blank pages of the album booklet. To appreciate all their music achieves, watch Sigur Rós in concert and experience artistry unlike any other.

Sigur Rós Live in Concert

Sigur Rós is an experimental post-rock band from Iceland with six No. 1 albums and three platinum records to their name. The trio -- comprised of frontman Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson, bassist Georg Hólm, and keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson -- has remained at the forefront of the international music scene since the band's 1994 conception. Sigur Rós became one of the most celebrated alternative groups throughout the years, praised for consistently breaking ground with their ethereal and orchestral production. It's this atmospheric sound that Sigur Rós is best known for, along with Jónsi's siren-like falsettos that resonate with a celestial lullaby. The progressive outfit's 1999 breakout album, Ágætis Byrjun, received the inaugural Shortlist Music Award, a prestigious prize created to recognize independent releases. They went on to produce a prodigious volume of work, releasing a total of 10 albums and 12 EPs within a span of 20 years. Their No. 1 chart-topper "Glósóli" and signature track "Hoppípolla" appeared in the 2005 film Takk, winning a trio of Icelandic Music Awards. Sigur Rós has also won three MTV Europe Music Awards and in 2004 received their first Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album for ( ).

    An Incredible Spiritual Experience

    by Michael H. on 9/5/23Greek Theatre-U.C. Berkeley - Berkeley

I discovered Sigur Ros' music prior to the pandemic but they truly became part of my mental health regimen when lockdown began. I knew that I had always wanted to experience them live and hear the gorgeous melodies and vocals live whether I could understand every word or not. This concert was my first opportunity and I couldn't wait to take advantage. The dark lighting let me know that this was not a show to watch but a show to experience. As the orchestra began and the luscious sounds filled the air, the audience hushed and settled in. Throughout the whole experience, the audience was almost silent and we were all transported in our own ways to our own special magical places through the music and the vocals of Jonsi. I felt joy, ecstasy, and even wept openly as a wave of emotion hit me more than once with the songs I heard (including Ylur, my favorite from their new record) and when they played my favorite song from their discography, Hoppipolla, I screamed with joy. I don't know how long the set was but it absolutely flew by. I left with a heart full of joy and feeling like I was walking on air. It was an experience that exceeded everything I hoped for and gave me more than I thought I even wanted. Truly a deeply spiritual, powerful, meditative experience for me that I am so grateful that I could experience

    Underwhelming

    by JM on 8/30/23

The show was pretty underwhelming. Apart from a few select moments it didn’t really take advantage of having a full orchestra. Mostly the orchestra just provided uninteresting background strings, which didn’t add much. In fact, it probably detracted from the energy of the performance by making it feel stiff and overly formal. The orchestra also seemed to be struggling to keep tempo, often rushing or dragging or overall just off time. The show also featured mostly new music and only a few of the more popular older songs. The crowd clearly reacted much better when these were played, while it seemed people were getting bored or distracted during the repetitive newer songs.

Sigur Ros and the Wordless Orchestra was by far the most moving experience I have ever had at a concert. Must see for anyone that is a fan!

    Expected more

    by Kaunosario on 8/29/23

It was a beautiful evening in the open air at the Greek theater. Unfortunately the concert didn’t live up to expectations. The band and orchestra primarily played new songs from their new album. All rather subdued pieces. I wish more of the old songs were included.

    It carrys you away

    by Oz on 8/28/23

If you haven't experienced a Sigur Ros' event, please do so the next time they come around. It might not be with a 20 piece orchestra, but even as a 4-piece, the sound takes you to places only the best high could. Their shows should be enjoyed sober too. Cheers and welcome to the community!
