Editorial Reviews

Recorded one musician at a time from home end of 2020 into early 2021, Wild Loneliness steers away from the anger of What a Time to Be Alive to instead refocus on gratitude. Wild Loneliness includes guest performance by Sharon Van Etten, Teenage Fanclub, Mike Mills, Tracyanne Campbell & more!

Foolish is one of my All-Time Favorite albums, but that was 28 years ago. This is not that album. It's less aggressive, but still full of energetic and catchy songs. This is like catching up with an old friend you haven't seen in years. It's the same person, but you can hear the change, the maturity in them, and in the stories they tell.

Not sure why some people choose to bash this album, as it is another great offering from the band. It's not the early-mid 90s Superchunk, but it is still awesome.

Against my better judgment i took a chance on this....big mistake. As soon as i saw horns, strings, etc in the notes I knew it was trouble. Most of their later, post 1995 stuff has been pretty soft, a few exceptions noted. Tossing Seeds, Kitty, i mean some of the greatest rock ever recorded is there. Sadly its not here. If you like their mellower stuff, this is for you. I put on Tossing Seeds right after this and whoa....right up there with Nevermind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superchunk's 15th album is a melodic delight
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 8, 2022
Superchunk have been plying their quality indie-rock trade for over three decades now and Wild Loneliness, their twelfth album, is surely one of the finest of their long career. It combines dreamy, soft vocals with chunky guitars in a wholly successful marriage, like Teenage Fanclub at their mid-nineties peak (and, indeed, Norman Blake and Raymond McGinley guest on the eco-aware Endless Summer), and just like the aforementioned Fannies, the musical compositions and melodies are deliciously irresistible. The record begins well, but really begins to find its stride with the supremely catchy On The Floor (featuring guest vocals by REM's Mike Mills) and the heavenly, brass-augmented power-pop leanings of Highly Suspect; both absolutely brilliant. Other highlights, for me, are the infectious title track and the album closer, If You're Not Dark, a song that slowly builds to a subtly shimmering chorus that highlights the gorgeous harmonies between Mac and guest vocalist Sharon Van Etten. Wild Loneliness is such a feel-good album from start to finish and it's also one that also genuinely seems to get better and better the more you listen to it. It's frustrating that Superchunk aren't a lot more well known, because this record deserves to be heard by a much bigger audience. Wonderful stuff.
