You can’t drink on the GA floor you can only drink upstairs. That was annoying. As for the Avalanches I wanted them to mix their set more. Very much a press play kind of set. Not much dj’ing. Staff was nice though.
This show felt like a New Years Eve Party. It was all smiles, pure celebration — I’ve never seen so many people happy at once. The Avalanches brought that much joy to the crowd. They were full energy, performed an encore, and walked out into the crowd to hug people as the last song faded out. Two world class dj/producers rocking the best venue in SLC (the depot is the perfect size with the best sound) will forever be one of my most memorable shows.
My first–ever concert was Oasis in Dublin, when I was 11. That has stayed with me to this day, 20 years later, as I distinctly remember they didn't play Wonderwall. I was so despondent after, it really etched a memory in my brain. The Avalanches not playing Frontier Psychiatrist is as big a let down. Now, I don't go to concerts for the big hits, I go for the whole experience. And them choosing to leave that out was a perfect analogy for the concert as a complete entity. The Avalanches are genre-benders and trend-setters – a group that shaped the musical landscape with their first project. To see them jumping around, taking selfies with the crowd, and acting in the same any bubblegum pop act would was almost embarrassing. And the music matched the behaviour. It was a generic electro-pop gig, not a musical journey through a group's storied past. Now, it should be said that they have laid themselves a difficult task. The exceptionally long space between their first album and their latest projects means that they are playing for an immensely varied crowd. And that was laid bare when the majority of people there only really came alive when they started to play their recent songs. But I would argue that they should lean in to their legend status. Teach the crowd what they do and have done, don't pander to them. I went to see legends. And though I appreciate the energy they put out, it seems they aren't aware of just how lauded they are. Three years until Since I Left You turns 25 – I would buy a ticket to a tour celebrating that anniversary, for sure. But not to another regular concert by them. Absolutely not.
We waited and waited and were reward for our patience with an incredible set. Only complaint was it was shorter than expected. I’d hoped we’d get at least a 2 hour show. 90 minutes just wasn’t enough
Not much creativity during the show beyond playing their tunes and bouncing behind their table. Additionally, they only played for 70 minutes or so.
Fans who listened to their "Since I Left You" will love how The Avalanches have translated the sample-heavy songs into a live act. It's a big party, even if the crew doesn't quite have their opening act choice or stage presence quite nailed down yet.
great energy, super cool to have spank rock there. great setlist, funky, fun, excellent.
