Good Bones for Joe Strummer Tribute Guitar

Good Bones for Joe Strummer Tribute Guitar
Not as high of quality and more expensive as compared to my Indonesian 2019 Squier Bullet Telecaster in Red Sparkle, but it did the trick for my Strummer project. It was the least expensive new sunburst with rosewoodesque fretboard that I could find. This one is a 2022, purchased in January of 2023. "Crafted in China." I dig the paradox/hypocrisy/synergy of the finished Chinese/British/American product. After all, Joe himself was not immune. He was about the freedom to do what you wanted while looking out for the other guy, which is the spirit of this homage. The guitar itself is good. It's a top loader bridge, not a string through like the 2019. Works fine. I kept the tuners and replaced the saddles with some better ones I had in my parts box. Plays fine. It needed a lot of TLC on the sharp fret ends. For the money I expected imperfection, but this fret work was particularly time consuming as they really sprouted out and were cut poorly. I replaced the ceramic pickups with Amazon-procured Fleor Alnico 5s. Did the same on my 2019. Nice pickups for the money and they do emulate the '60s Tele sound on the cheap. Made the strap cushion with animal print faux suede I found in an attic, using an eleven dollar Perri strap also sourced on Amazon. It took longer to stitch that on than it did to file the fret ends. It's Iconic Strummer on a budget. Used Grolsch strap locks too. Plays well, sounds good. I'm happy with it. Needed to spray grey primer over the sunburst and then black over that. Lots of sanding and bashing with chains and billiard balls. Sourced the stickers wherever I could find them. Time consuming but not expensive. Nice platform for this modification. Four stars for the Squier Bullet Telecaster. Perfectly good guitar. Thanks Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars great value
Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2021
Great guitar for beginners or upgrade project. Arrived unscathed and had a decent setup out of the box. Sounds fine. Great guitar to beat on while your more expensive guitars hang on the wall. I consider it my “daily driver.” I don’t have any other Teles to compare it to, but the neck pickup alone is quite muffled, and you can get a nice squeal from the bridge pickup. That can all be dialed in to taste with the tone knob and the pu switch. Zero complaints.

I got this with the intention of upgrading everything over time. It’s my first “project” guitar ever. So far, I’ve done easy stuff like shielding the cavities, new pickguard, neck plate, tuners and strings. I plan on replacing the pickups, knobs and bridge eventually, but not in a hurry since these sound fine.

Like me, if this is a project guitar for you, be gentle if you need to lift out the switch/knob plate. The soldering job on the pots & switch was weak and one of the wires popped out after a couple wiggles.
