Product Description
First-class coffee begins with the grind
The perfect grinder for the budding at-home coffee enthusiast
The key to brewing coffee at home starts with a great grind, and that’s where this mighty little marvel comes into play. With 14 stepped grind settings and a one minute grind timer, the Scala is all about breaking down the barriers between your fresh, whole bean coffee and a delicious morning cup. From coarser grounds perfect for press, all the way through pour over and drip levels, the Scala is the perfect fit for a variety of slow brew methods. At its lower end, the Scala can even produce grounds perfect for a pressurized espresso portafilter. This means that it is a great grinder to start with as you work out what your new favorite at-home brew method might be!
The Scala features a 10 ounce bean hopper that is easily removed for cleaning and burr access. Removing the burrs from the grinder is also a breeze, which makes maintaining the Scala easy as can be, another bonus for new users.
Inside the Scala you’ll find sharp, solid conical steel burrs that make short work of coffee beans without adding any heat to the grounds. A low speed motor assists in delivering consistent grounds perfect for your brew.
Your benefits at a glance:
- 14 dedicated grind settings offer easy dial-in for your preferred slow-brew method.
- Aroma-preserving, low-speed gear
- High quality stainless steel conical burrs
- One minute grind timer adjustable by five-second increments
- 10 ounce bean hopper capacity
Stepped Grind Adjust
14 dedicated grind settings offer easy dial-in for Aeropress, pour over, French press and everything in between.
Aroma-preserving grinding
The grinder has a two-stage gearbox with a low speed, which has the advantage that the coffee grounds won't heat up during the grinding process and the sensitive coffee aromas are preserved in this way.
Timed Dosing
The Scala comes equipped with a built-in grind timer adjustable in 5 second increments. The Solis grinder's consistency really shines in its medium, drip coffee/pour over range.

I’m not a huge coffee snob or expert, but I do enjoy using various coffee brew methods from pressurized espresso to Aeropress, to French press and cold brewing. So I need a grinder that can provide enough coarseness variation to do that.
Don’t pass on this product. It’s a little more expensive than the group of cheaper ($30-50 range) burr grinders from some common household brands, but it’s also less expensive than the medium to higher end grinders that can go for $150-200+. You may not get as many features or more coarseness settings compared to the more expensive ones, but you will get a consistent quality of grinding that you will not see from those cheaper ones!
I also like to brew different coffees and that where this experience started going down. The grinder retains a LOT of ground coffee, so every time you brew, you get some of the last coffee you used, not what you ground. Enough was left that it did effect the the taste of some of my coffees.
I was also unhappy with the large amounts of fines the grinder produced. Quite a bit went into the cup, but lots of the dust started packing itself into the open areas around and below the burrs. I could not set the grinder to grind as small as I wanted, be cause the excess fines affected the taste.
Typically I only used the grinder once a day, but I had to spend 15 to 30 minutes each week painstakingly cleaning out all the nooks and crannies. If I did not, the grinder would start to jam up and bog down.
After 6 months I have had enough, and purchased a new, more expensive grinder. This is truly an "entry level grinder". It does a better job than one of those $18.00 blade type bean smashers, but it's a far cry from the grinders in the $150 - $300 price range.
It has Conical Steel Burrs which will stay sharp and grind coffee quickly and prevent the beans from getting too hot spoiling flavor. 14 dedicated grind settings offer easy dial-in grinds for your favorite kinds of brews. And is easy to clean.
I can tell you the recipients of this coffee grinder really love it. Was worth the investment for them.
