Original review below:
I bought this after reading a NYTimes Wirecutter review of French Presses. I’ve used a classic Bodum press for two decades, but after reading about the potential cholesterol raising effects of unfiltered coffee, was looking for an alternative. I use a Clever for single-cup filtered coffee, but most days I want to brew more than one cup at a time. Enter the Espro. And as long as I was upgrading, why not go all in with the double-wall vacuum insulated model? This could be my leisurely weekend coffee maker.
Well, the coffee is great, but the added expense of the double-wall, vacuum insulation is not at all worth it. Kept the coffee moderately hot for one hour. After two hours, it was unpleasantly cold. I thought this would spare me the need to decant into a thermos, thereby saving me some clean up. But since there are so more parts to the filtration system than a typical press, it’s more of a pain to clean up, and doesn’t keep the coffee very hot.
Bottom line: Great filtration, but the glass or non vacuum sealer metal versions would suffice. The top of the line version doesn’t deliver on keeping coffee hot long enough to justify the high price tag.
Top reviews from other countries
1. Grinds would somehow get into the coffee
2. A significant amount of liquid (100-200ml) remains in the container with the grounds. Beyond the small
annoyance of losing that much coffee out of every litre, this makes the grinds incredibly sloppy to clean and dispose of.
3. The matte white paint chipped around the rim on its first use, just from inserting the plunger in a normal, gentle way. The paint also takes on scuffs and scratches from literally any contact with my stainless steel sink, which is the only way I can clean it. If you’re (totally reasonably) expecting something like the indestructible powder-coated paint on Yeti products, you’re in for a disappointment.
4. The insulation is not great - if you pour two cups out of the litre and then come back 30mins later for more, the remaining coffee will be warm but not hot, lukewarm if you add cream. The lid does not appear insulated so it seems heat easily escapes and heat retention isn’t much better than a regular glass French press.
I was happy to pay a premium for a Canadian luxury product that would last for years but this experience just doesn’t reflect the marketing or the price.
It keeps the coffee warm enough if you like to put milk in it, and for a good period of time. The taste of coffee is rich without the residues of a ordinary french press. I recommend this product all the way !
I say sadly because, in all other respects, this is an excellent product. Very fine filter, excellent tight fitting lid, excellent insulation.
But, alas, this wasn’t quite the right size for me.
