These are a pretty big capsule and they are stinky, I take them at night with water and ignore the smell the best I can but there's definitely an order. Nothing abnormal, just noted.
It helps my tummy regulate but not perfectly, the Pink Stork brand ones worked better for that specific purpose.
Pros:
They effectively raised my extremely low iron (5.2) that kept landing me in the emergency room all the way up to a 10.7 hemoglobin. The doctor was very pleased and it has made it possible for me to avoid iron infusions with this pregnancy.
For example, some women need more iron and their regular prenatal multivitamin contains both calcium AND iron in one pill. This decreases bioavailability. That being said, it's helpful that this prenatal blend has iron without the calcium.
Also, some women pregnant may need more Vitamin D than their regular prenatal provides. I sure was advised to take extra Vitamin D!
The addition of methylated folate and B12 is also helpful, especially for those with the MTHFR gene mutation (like me).
Choline is important for fetal brain development and selenium is a nutrient a lot of people tend to lack.
For gut health, I REALLY appreciate the large amount of probiotics (two Lactobacillus strains and one Bifidobacterium strain). Probiotics are so important, especially during pregnancy. The '59 Billion' is very assuring and it comes in a high-quality GLASS bottle, not plastic.
Lastly, the addition of ginger and raspberry leaf make this product even better. Ginger has so many benefits: anti-nausea, immune support, improves blood flow, anti-inflammatory, etc. Raspberry leaf is commonly recommended to help tone the uterus and improve reproductive health. I was happily surprised to see the addition of these two plant friends!
I was hesitant to buy these because of the vast number of complaints that these capsules smell 'bad'. However, mine don't smell bad at all... they actually smell quite GOOD! They look and smell like a high-quality product in my opinion.
I probably wouldn't feel as compelled to buy these at regular price (almost $30 per bottle) but am more than happy to buy these at about ($20 per bottle). These are a great addition to a whole food, nutrient dense diet (some moms don't want to take a lot of synthetic vitamins) as well as a way to augment regular supplementation.
If I were to change one thing, I would increase the variety of probiotics and add a little vitamin C to increase the iron absorption. Other than that, I am happy with this purchase!
I can’t say if they are easy to take when nauseous in first trimester, I got them after my morning sickness had lifted.
There is a light fish food type smell, but it is not bad at all especially compared to some of the other prenatals I have taken!!!
Chase them with something with flavor to hide it
Gotta warn you, though - the taste is terrible. As a farm girl, I can tell you without hesitation that it tastes and smells exactly how alfalfa grass and cow feed smell.
HOWEVER - as long as don’t breathe as I pop them in my mouth, followed by taking a large gulp of a tasty beverage immediately upon slipping them onto my tongue, I can’t even taste them.
No heartburn afterwards, I haven’t thrown them up once. No nasty side effects whatsoever. I’m totally sold on these. They are now on my subscribe and save, and I’m thrilled to death to be taking prenatals while sick!
