An NPR Favorite Book of 2019
“Adorable, joyous.” —BuzzFeed
“I’m head-over-heels for this charming, funny, romantic, life-affirming book.” —Becky Albertalli, New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Leah on the Offbeat

The irresistible companion novel to the New York Times bestseller When Dimple Met Rishi, which follows Rishi’s brother, Ashish, and a confident, self-proclaimed fat athlete named Sweetie as they both discover what love means to them.

Ashish Patel didn’t know love could be so…sucky. After being dumped by his ex-girlfriend, his mojo goes AWOL. Even worse, his parents are annoyingly, smugly confident they could find him a better match. So, in a moment of weakness, Ash challenges them to set him up.

The Patels insist that Ashish date an Indian-American girl—
under contract. Per subclause 1(a), he’ll be taking his date on “fun” excursions like visiting the Hindu temple and his eccentric Gita Auntie. Kill him now. How is this ever going to work?

Sweetie Nair is many things: a formidable track athlete who can outrun most people in California, a loyal friend, a shower-singing champion. Oh, and she’s also fat. To Sweetie’s traditional parents, this last detail is the kiss of death.

Sweetie loves her parents, but she’s so tired of being told she’s lacking because she’s fat. She decides it’s time to kick off the Sassy Sweetie Project, where she’ll show the world (and herself) what she’s really made of.

Ashish and Sweetie both have something to prove. But with each date they realize there’s an unexpected magic growing between them. Can they find their true selves without losing each other?

Gr 7 Up-Ashish Patel is the handsome star basketball player who could get any girl he wants, but all of that changes when his girlfriend, Celia, dumps him and he can't seem to find his mojo. Though it's not his usual style, he decides to take matters into his parents' hands and asks them to arrange a suitable date for him. Sweetie Nair is intelligent, beautiful, and an amazing athlete who happens to be fat. She is filled with confidence but is constantly knocked down by her mother who believes that Sweetie can't be happy until she is thin. When Ashish's mother decides that Sweetie is the right girl for him and Sweetie's mother declines the arrangement, Sweetie goes against her mother's wishes and dates Ashish. They both have their reasons for dating each other, but neither expects it to end in love. This is a companion to Menon's popular book When Dimple Met Rishi and is also told in alternating perspectives. Fans of Menon will not be disappointed and will be excited to see cameos of Rishi and Dimple. VERDICT Give this entertaining read to romantic comedy fans everywhere.-Kristyn Dorfman, The Nightingale-Bamford School, New York Cityα(c) Copyright 2011. Adorable and (almost) as quirky as its film's (almost) namesake!
5 Stars
Adorable and (almost) as quirky as its film's (almost) namesake!
Ashish is bummed out. This is rare. Guys like Ashish don’t trudge through hallways, hoping to get a girl’s attention, but that’s what he’s been doing since his girlfriend dumped him. She doesn’t care, doesn’t seem to want him back. Shouldn’t it be the other way around? He’s quite a player — it’s what sets him apart from his older brother Rishi. Rishi is the golden child, the he-can-do-no-wrong son. He even fell for the girl his parents had selected for him, no questions asked. Well, almost. If Ashish hopes to get out of this funk, he must do the unthinkable: let his parents (his mother, more like) select a girl for him. It’s fine. Not like he has to go along with it...Sweetie is the Road Runner at her high school. She’s an amazing athlete, and no one can outrun her in track. She has friends and a life. The problem? Her weight. She’s not thin, far from it. Her mother reminds her of this everyday. It doesn’t matter how well she does in school or how accomplished she is in sports, her weight takes precedent over all matters. It’s so bad — at least according to her mother — that she must find a boy soon. In comes Ashish. Cute, popular, vain Ashish. Will he overlook the fact that Sweetie has some extra pounds? This isn’t love at first sight, but sparks do take place. There’s something about Sweetie that Ashish cannot overlook, and he is definitely intrigued, almost to the point of relenting to his parents’ old-fashioned customs. This book had me at the opening page. It’s such a fun and cute YA rom-com you can’t help turning the pages. Ashish was interesting in WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI, and I’m glad he got his own story. I love that Menon uses variables of old movie titles for her novels. Nice touch. This book, like WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI, touches on arranged marriages and being true to oneself, but takes it one step further with fat shaming and body image. I know what it’s like to be an overachiever, and it’s much worse when you grow up with demanding and traditional parents. You want to make them happy, but their idea of happiness doesn’t align with yours. I went through this, and I could relate. THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT SWEETIE stays true to the #OwnVoices movement with an endearing and relatable novel. Great flight and beach read! If you loved Menon’s previous novels, then you will love this one. Five delicious Brown Sugar Delight Lattes (Mini’s New Coffee Creation!).

Just like the first book, I loved this book from the beginning. I especially like the topics Menon decided to tackle through this book, one of them being weight and its correlation to likeability and how one is treated.

She tackles this issue through the eyes of Sweetie who is perhaps the nicest and most thoughtful character I've ever "met". She is a star track athlete, Indian, and fat. In an attempt to prove to her mom, those in the Indian community, and herself that fat girls can do anything skinny girls can, she begins the Sassy Sweetie project. During this time, we get to see Sweetie grow into a girl who is confident in who she is and confident in how others perceive her.

As a lovely companion to Sweetie, we get to learn more about Ashish. I wasn't sure what to think of him after finishing WHEN DIMPLE MET RISHI, but I absolutely fell in love with him in this book. We see him fight against what he believes makes him inferior to his brother, strive to overcome his feelings for his ex, and work to become the guy he believes worthy of Sweetie.

What I loved about this book, and it's something that I think we didn't see enough of in the first book, is the growth we see in both Sweetie and Ashish. They're each working towards different goals in their lives, but they're able to support and assist each other along the way.

A couple of other things I loved about this include their friend groups and Ashish's healing time. Ashish and Sweetie both have "large" friend groups which, I'm guessing, can be hard for authors. They have to make sure that we readers get to know each member of these groups as individuals who have different personalities and different pasts. Menon did a great job with this. She would give us small scenes with the main character and one of their friends so we had a little more time to get to know the friend apart from the group. There was even some inner friend group drama to show us the friends' personalities a little better.

Also, I loved that Ashish didn't just move on from his ex in the blink of an eye. He struggled to move one and was truthful with Sweetie about his struggles. This felt much more real than in some other books that I've read where the character is all-of-a-sudden over their ex with one look at their new love interest.

Staying on the romance topic, I'm still a big fan of slow-burn romances so I wish I could have seen more of that. Or at least been able to simmer in the tension for a little while longer. Nevertheless, I still really enjoyed Sweetie and Ashish's relationship.

Overall, it was another slam dunk from Menon, obviously. It was a beautiful romance, a story towards body-positivity, and learning to be yourself.

This is by far my favorite Sandhya Menon book to date! Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed her first two books, they were fun, cute romances but - a little forgettable. She took a slightly deeper dive this time and I LOVED IT. It's only been day so far but I think There's Something About Sweetie is one I'm going to remember. Aside from the adorable (as always) romance that is featured, we also take a hard look at; body image issues (particularly how they relate to American-Indian culture), mother-daughter relationships, getting over hard breakups and finding ways to love yourself despite what anyone else thinks.

There were a couple rough patches where the dialog felt a little cheesy or too forced. Especially in relation to the body positive conversations, they felt a little like they came straight from a personal development book. However those issues are pretty minor and are easy to overlook. As a whole I thought this was a beautiful, motivational story and I had so much fun getting to see our main characters fall in love with each other - and themselves.

NOTE: This can definitely be enjoyed fully without reading When Dimple Met Rishi BUT if you have read it -- then I think you're going to love this even more. (Even if you think you miss Celia, trust me.) There's a few little cameos too from the first book which are fun. As for me, I think the romance is even better in this one.

Recommend for fans of:

- Simple/HEA Love Stories
- Body Positivity
- Bollywood

Each book of Sandhya Menon's keeps on getting better. She is now one of my go-to authors for excellent YA contemporary fiction. This book is best read after When Dimple Met Rishi, which is also excellent, but it can also be read as a standalone. I will do the best I can to express my love and appreciation for this life affirming book.
Sweetie Nair is a beautiful, smart track star. The only problem is that she is "fat." People frequently make fun of her in a snarky way, and her mother constantly pressures her to lose weight. When Ashish Patel, a handsome young athlete who wants to date again after a difficult breakup with his ex girlfriend Celia, is matched with Sweetie by his parents, she can't believe it. Though her mother forbids her to date Ashish because of her weight, Sweetie and Ashish decide to date anyway, with the Patels' approval. Can Sweetie convince herself and her mother that she is worthy of love even though she is overweight?
This book touched me in such a deep way. I was, and still am, one of the"fat girls." I was made fun of, rejected, and made to feel small and worthless by people who either didn't care how they made me feel or did it on purpose to be cruel. But that is only because I let them. Each person has worth and value, no matter how they look on the outside, and I love how Sweetie's story supports this truth. If only there were more guys like Ashish, who saw Sweetie's beauty shine from the inside outwards. I love how Sweetie took control of the way she felt and did things to affirm her beauty instead of succumbing to her own negative self-talk as well as others.' The writing was descriptive and realistic, as well as funny and emotional. I don't personally agree with some of the views and lifestyles of the characters, and I didn't like the profanity, but other than that I wholeheartedly recommend this book. Everyone who has ever felt like this or knows someone who struggles with this area should read this book. I am eagerly anticipating the author's next book!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley, and I also purchased the hardcover from Amazon. A positive review was not required, and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars YA Body Positivity with a culture twist
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 9, 2021
Read this book as part of my 2021 POPSUGAR reading challenge - Body Positivity prompt. Loved this book and the way it tackled body positivity from a cultural aspect. Many times it’s within our own cultural stereotypes that body shaming and low self esteem comes from. I like that both main characters were athletes which is not the a-typical role of an Indian American.
