Banana and fan palms rhythmically sway in the tropical breeze of Catherine Martin by Mokum’s best-selling La Palma print. In colours ranging from romantic pastels to tropical greens, heady whisky, and a brooding sepia, the palette has continued to evolve since its 2017 release as a colour coordinated pairing of drapery and wallpaper in the Majorelle collection.

The collection was inspired by the Musee Yves Saint Laurent in Marrakech, Morocco. Within the museum’s grounds sits Jardin Majorelle, a botanical garden cultivated with plants from five continents over four decades by the villa’s original owner, French artist Jacques Majorelle.

The thematic collection suited the inclusion of a tropical element to balance the traditional Islamic geometric patterns, Majorelle and Hammam, with the vibrant Moroccan scenery. Additionally, biophilic reference points were gathered from icons of interior design – not least Dorothy Draper’s Martinique wallcovering – but to craft a unique interpretation of the tropical landscape, La Palma needed to be both contemporary and colourful, accented by the abstract quality of the painterly palms.
