    X-E3

The FUJIFILM X-E3, built from the essence of minimalism, has been refined to maximize functional performance to its utmost limit.

This camera was created in the pursuit of minimalism, striving to stimulate the senses of the person wielding it, aiming to draw out the true intent of the photographer.

The simple and beautiful appearance pursued by the X-E Series has been fused together with innovative functions and an incredibly compact and lightweight design.

The FUJIFILM X-E3 allows users to enjoy the ultimate level of photographic image quality that the X Series is known for while enjoying the way a camera is supposed to be.

    Imaging

    X-Trans

X-Trans CMOS III Sensor for high quality image.

The FUJIFILM X-E3 features Fujifilm's X-Trans CMOS III, a 24.3-megapixel APS-C sized sensor renowned for outstanding image quality when combined with high performance XF lenses. Thanks to its random pixel array, the sensor cuts outs moiré and false colors without needing an optical low-pass filter, plus it delivers impressive noise reduction up to ISO 12800. The sensor also offers excellent read speed, helping to improve the camera’s response in the burst mode, high-accuracy AF tracking, high-speed live view and high-quality video performance.

X-Processor Pro with advanced image processing capability

The FUJIFILM X-E3's X-Processor Pro image processing engine delivers a processing speed roughly 4x faster than previous models. The increased buffer memory boosts performance, drawing out the best from the X-Trans CMOS III sensor. This means that ACROS has now been added to the popular set of Film Simulation modes, which are available for both stills and 4K video. X-Processor Pro also enhances overall performance with shorter shooting intervals, shutter release time lag and blackout time, as well as improving AF accuracy and the number of continuous frames possible in the burst mode.

    High Performance

The CPU for high-speed processing. The Buffer memory has also been increased for an even faster response.

    Continuous shooting

Continuous shooting performance up to 8.0fps, allowing for continuous capture of fast-moving subjects.

    Operation & Control Layout

    Manual Controls

Combinations of settings on the shutter speed dial and the lens's aperture ring allow you to set exposure modes including Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual even when the camera is turned off.

Supporting exposure compensation for ± 3 stops in 1/3 steps. Supports up to ± 5 stops when in the 'C' position.

    Advanced SR Auto mode

Switch the top plate to 'Auto' to select the Advanced SR Auto mode. The camera will then automatically select the optimum autofocus and exposure settings from 58 presets.

    Focus Lever

With direct operation performed using a stick, it is possible to instantaneously move the focus area in eight directions, including vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. Focusing can be performed accurately with composition already decided.

    Customizable Menu

It is possible to assign frequently used menu functions to the 'Quick Menu' and 'My Menu.' Assigned functions can also be called up directly by setting them to the 'Function Button'. Abundant shortcut possibilities are incredibly convenient, allowing for easy transitions according to the application and scene.

    Electronic Viewfinder

Equipped with a 0.62x* / 100% field of view and 2.36M-dot organic EL electronic viewfinder, projecting subjects clearly even in bright outdoors scenes. Boasting a display time lag of just 0.005 seconds, in addition to continuing to capture the subject in real time, the viewfinder also reflects shooting effects such as exposure settings and film simulation.

    Touchscreen LCD

The rear LCD monitor adopts an electrostatic touch panel display, supporting intuitive operation with your fingertips such as flick, double tap, tap, drag, and pinching in and out.

    Shooting Mode / Playback Mode.

Compact, retro, and awesome image quality
I'm moving up from a Sony RX100V and wanted a compact interchangeable lens camera capable of producing outstanding images and I think the Fuji XE3 hits it right on the mark.In the past I've also used a Sony A7 with a Zeiss Batis 85mm 1.8 and can state that the results coming out the Fuji XE3 with a Leica Summilux 50mm 1.4 are substantially better - at least to my eye. Granted, much of that could be the lens, and the A7 is probably near the end of its product cycle, but the Zeiss is certainly no slouch and the fact that we can even compare results from a full frame sensor and an APS-C is really quite incredible. Given that this setup is about half the size of the A7+Zeiss and at a price point of <$1000 for the body I think its a great "value." I despise that word, especially in this case because it seems to imply a compromise was made somewhere where there wasn't.For reference, I handled a Fuji T20 and XPro2 though didn't use actually them - take it for what its worth but I found the center placement of the viewfinder on the T20 a real issue while the XPro2 felt a bit wide. The XE3 feels better in my hands than both and is quite a bit smaller than even the T20.In terms of handling, the joystick is pretty slick, it took all of 30 minutes to familiarize myself with the physical control layout, and the control wheels on the front and back are easily customizable so I have mine set for ISO and shutter speed. The electronic shutter is dead silent, whereas the mechanical shutter is relatively quiet and unobtrusive. I pretty much nixed the touch screen, I'm using the camera as a manual focus so really 80% of the features packed in this camera are not really relevant to me.The only major complaint I have is there seems to be some lag on the EVF / LCD when manual focusing, almost like the refresh rate goes to a crawl. I resolve it by depressing the shutter release halfway but its still kind of annoying. I have no clue if its the Fuji X mount to M mount adapter or the actual camera body, but this is all pretty minor stuff and I'm hoping a firmware update will resolve the issue. All in all a fantastic camera.-- update (still a fantastic camera) --I'd like to amend this review as my major complaint about the EVF / LCD could be completely resolved by setting the Performance setting under "Power Management" to High Performance, up from Standard...I guess I figured the camera set on Standard was already pretty good so High Performance is just being greedy, right?Tips on Using Manual FocusI didn't find the digital split image terribly useful, maybe if it were a sharper implementation that doesn't cover most of the frame I'd use it but for now my preferred methods are either plain standard or focusing peaking. I had found focusing peaking a bit difficult in certain situations with a color LCD / Viewfinder, namely due to a lack of contrast where the focus peaking color is the same as the subject e.g red focus peaking on a red fire truck, or where there's just no contrast at the point of focus at all.To resolve this, you need a black & white EVF / LCD liveview with colored focus peaking. To do so you can set the film simulation mode (ACROS, Monochrom, etc., perhaps a bit of a misnomer because it can be applied to stills as well as video), which can be configured to render a beautiful black and white jpeg still photo while maintaining red focus peaking in live view.To preserve the data in the shot, you can configure the image quality output to produce an additional RAW file (RAW + Normal/Fine) that preserves all color data captured on the sensor. In my opinion this gives the best of both worlds - a black and white view in the EVF / LCD with a contrasty Red focus peak, that produces an amazing JPEG while preserving a fully colored RAW file should I need it.In terms of button configuration, I set the top right AF-L button to "Focus Check" which allows me to do snap digital zoom so I can fine tune focus on relatively stationary subjects. I found this pretty essential for portraiture on a fast lens as the depth of field is almost deceivingly narrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have found my love for photography again!!
Reviewed in Canada on December 12, 2019
This just might be the camera that saved me from giving up on photography after I tried and failed to find inspiration with two Nikon DSLR’s in the past 30 months. This camera that has imbibed in me the inspiration to just shoot away and explore different subjects in different lighting situations, much like when I first began shooting on film DSLR’s 30 years ago.

I bought this camera because I wanted something compact and unobtrusive for candid photos at family events taken indoor under low light, in place of my big, heavy, in-your-face Nikon D7000 which is anything but subtle (you can see the two cameras side by side in picture above).

I am pleased to say this Fujifilm X-E3 absolutely blown me away in pretty much every category. For my first picture out of the box, I simply flipped the top lever to AUTO and snapped a quick indoor picture under low light and the camera absolutely nailed the image. The image quality was absolutely stunning.

    What I like:

    1. It is highly customizable and has just the right amount of dedicated controls in my opinion.

    2. You can set it so the EVF turns on on and the LCD screen switches off when you put your eye up to the viewfinder.

    3. It is so compact and lightweight that it is easy to shoot handheld at a low shutter speed, especially with the 23mm f/2 prime lens.

    4. Touch focus and touch shooting. I initially thought this was nothing more than a gimmick that I would never use but it is actually pretty awesome.

    5. The the 8 FPS still photo frame rate is amazing and faster still if you switch to the electronic shutter.

    6. You can zoom in on or swipe through photos you have taken with the touch screen and you can swipe in four different directions to access popular shooting controls.

    7. The available film filters are a nice addition, especially the Acros monochrome filter

    8. You can pair your phone to the camera and see in real time exactly what your camera is seeing.

    9. It is simply beautiful to hold and behold. It reminds me of the classic Leica 35mm rangefinders. It is like a classic Mercedes: it just oozes build quality and style!

    10. This is the first viewfinder diopter I ever used that I was able to adjust to be tack sharp when viewing without my glasses.

What I don’t like: The manual and the Fujifilm website do a poor job of indicating how to access and change settings which may be important to you, so here is a short list of cheats I compiled:

    1. Metering mode: Press “FN” button in front of EV dial. Use toggle stick to select one of the modes displayed on rear LCD
IMPORTANT!! You can only change metering mode when eye and face detect is set to “off”.

    2. Eye/face focus: In AF/MF shooting menu, scroll down to Face/Eye Detection Setting. Press Menu/OK button to display options. Select which face/eye detect mode you want or turn it off.

    3. Program mode: Set shutter speed dial and aperture ring both to A and use rear command dial to set desired shutter speed/aperture combination
IMPORTANT!! Shutter speed and aperture will not be displayed if Dynamic Range is set to auto so make sure your DR is set to 100 or 200.

    4. Mapping button functions: Press Menu/OK and scroll down to the Wrench icon. Toggle right to Button/Dial Setting and then right again to Function (FN) Setting. You will see outline of top and back view of camera with various settings listed vertically on the right. Scroll through FN icons and toggle right at the setting you want to change. A menu will then display with different settings you can map to that button.
NOTE: I have AE-L set to Back Button AF and AF-L set to bring up Eye Detect menu.

    5. If you want to customize how the icons are arranged in the “Quick Menu”, you must LONG PRESS the “Q” button to bring up the touch screen menu in edit mode. Once you have done that, you simply select the icon you want to change and replace it with another function from the menu that pops up.

It is a somewhat steep learning curve learning how to use certain settings and customizing others, but it is an incredibly satisfying camera to use once you have it set up. I am giving five stars because it is just such an awesome camera but would have deducted half a star for not so helpful user manual if it could.
