A few years back I grabbed a set of these on a whim (ok, desperation) after my Asolo GTX hiking boots rubbed my heels raw for the umpteenth time (also, did I mention I have Achilles bone spurs? They’re on my heel bone & curve to poke my Achilles tendon—convenient, amirite?)… I had to flex to my military combat boots to finish my elk hunt (Lowa Zephyrs). I resolve to find better / lighter footwear after the hunt.
So I snag these things and yep.. they feel tight & narrow, just like the reviews. I stick with em. No blisters. No Achilles tendinitis / discomfort from the spurs. Just a bit of “dang these are tight” for the first few weeks.
After a few weeks, I take these suckers up the Moanalua hike in Oahu. Yes, this is the legal way to the radar site of the “Stairway to Heaven” fame. A serious day hike for committed hikers.
Zero probs. You’re Spider-Man in these things. Afterwards, I was smoked, but no foot problems. A week later, we do it again. No probs. Again. I watched my buddies in “normal shoes” eat it on slick mud / roots, etc. No probs for these, the BFG MTRs for your feet.
So if you’re like me, big hobbit feet & in your 40s with sufficient gumption and income to absorb the cost of a failed footwear purchase or a willingness to take on the Amazon AI returns bot, you have nothing to lose by trying them.
This is my third pair. I put em on.. said “dang these are tight” and stepped it out for 6 miles. They’ll loosen up! Still zero blisters. Zero spur probs. Zero tendonitis.
I’m convinced these are the BEST SHOES MADE (that I’ve found). The tread will wear quicker than your average gym shoe… but the treads are super aggressive trail lugs… if you’re a townie speed walking concrete, you’ll rub the nubs off quick! Keep these to the trail & they’ll last you a good amount of time.
And let’s be honest—the looks and the laces.. are fire!
Initial reviews are cool and the gang, but 6 years of Bigfoot slinging lugs in mountainous terrain might be useful for the buyer on the fence.
Be patient & step it out.
Things that I love about these shoes
Fit : they fit great. Comfortable and snug. I do not have to worry about tightening the laces to get the right fit.
Grip : the grip is awesome. I can comfortably take strides without worrying too much about slipping.
Durability: The trails in central Pennsylvania are rocky, loose rocks and some rugged terrain as well. My previous shoes(nimbus gel - also a great pairs of shoes by the way) bottoms fell apart under 40 miles of trail running in the area. The Solomons show barely any signs of wear after over 200 miles on them.
They look great. Highly recommended.
First and foremost, sizing is on point but these fit narrow compared to a lot of shoes, even the wide version doesn't truly feel "wide." If you have a large/wide foot, you may want to try a pair on before you buy. However, with that said, that narrow fit usually translates to stability due to how snug around your feet they fit. Additionally, the tread on the shoes translates to the best grip I've encountered on a trail shoe which leads to a lot of confidence on the trails and hills whether it be rocky, smooth, slippery, or wet.
The insoles are comfortable but in wetter conditions they can potentially curl up when descending steep hills. Additionally, I deal with a lot of foot pain, so for that they tend to run a little thin. I typically just replace the included soles with thicker, thermomoldable ones, which in my case, have consistently been the Viktos brand "Ruck Recovery" insoles but there are plenty of other options out there as well.
Speaking of the tread, it's pretty durable. Through mostly dry, hard packed, southern California terrain, I'll average about 400-600 miles (or usually 4-6 months) per pair. With that said, at around 400 miles the tread around the ball of foot is usually worn down enough to consider replacing them just for the sake of potential slipping down less than stable (hard-packed with grainy pebbles/rocks and loose dirt) terrain. Also worth noting, it's not recommended to use these on pavement or asphalt, the lifespan of the tread will go down significantly if you do. So keep that in mind if you're using these in mixed terrain environments that may include paved roads.
All that aside, I've yet to find a better all-around trail shoe.

As they have soft, pliable knobs, these soles grip very well and give me more confidence than more traditional soles with typical ridges that can trap small stones and dirt, which can cause you to lose traction. Think decomposed granite. If you’re running easy smooth singletrack, these might be more than you need but I wear for all trail conditions.
Big fan of the Kevlar pull closure lacing system as it doesn’t come loose and can really be tightened. I prefer a tight fit. (Keep laces clean when tightening to maximize durability.).
I also wear them for wet creek crossings as they shed water through their mesh fabric. I live in a desert climate but they work well everywhere I go as they vent moisture quickly. I get 300-400 miles out of a pair. Soft knobs wear down before shoe loses its integrity, but then they become my hiking shoes. (I’ve never tried the GoreTex version).
