This is my first double edge razor and it’s fantastic. I’ve had it for two years now the threads have worn down and the razor won’t tighten anymore. I had to buy a replacement part and now it works. I would suggest not being heavy-handed when screwing the razor shut.

    One of the best razors I have ever used. This is my first DE safety razor and I have to say Its wild that Ive never used one before. The best, smoothest, easiest shave Ive ever had. After that fist initial nervous shave Ive been gliding all over grooming like a boss. If you're thinking about taking the plunge do it. Its much cheaper over time to use safety razors than any other product (minus going full straight razor).

    Absolutely excellent razor. The shortness is not an issue for me, although I tend to prefer a longer handle. Superb results, particularly with a nicely sharp blade, like Astra Superior Platinum, or, of course, the Gold Standard, Feather. For me, doesn't do as well with milder blades, I've tried maybe a dozen brands in this razor. Superb at close detail work around mouth and under the nose. My personal daily user, along with the equally excellent Viking Blades Godfather. Strong recommendation.

    Since I’ve been shaving 3 or 4 times a week for my coarse hair, I’ve always used a safety razor and off and on some cartridge razors like Gillette mach3 turbo or the fusion pro glide and even tried out the new pro lab “exfoliating razor” and a safety razor has always been my go to. For the last couple years I’ve stayed bearded but I’ve been shaving again for work.

    This is the best razor I have owned period. Safety cartridge electric whatever. I just used it today and got the smoothest shave of my life. Not a nick or a scratch or neck irritation with the bumps. Didn’t even need to do a second pass like I would with a cartridge. I love how they give you a free blade to try it out. I’m going to order a large pack of some razor blades cause there is no way I’m going back to cartridge razors!

    #1, it isn't made in China. That was important to me.
    #2, cost effective. In the long run I will save enough money on DE blades to pay for the razor.
    #3, I am sending less plastic to the dump

    This is my first DE razor. I was pleasantly surprised I was not nicking my face and neck with this razor especially after reading about the risks of using a DE razor. The bad news is I have to take multiple passes to get rid of all the stubble and even then I don't feel like the shave is as close as it should be.

    After starting with the Merkur a friend gave me his old butterfly razor and I loaded it up for a trial run and unknowingly nicked myself in about a dozen places (I was rushing through the shave to get out the door). However, the razor gave me a much closer shave and it does work much faster because I don't need to take two and three passes to get all the stubble. I continued to use the razor with much more caution and just a few nicks, nothing much. I now want a more aggressive razor than this Merkur after a few shaves with a much more aggressive razor.

    From this trial, I learned what an aggressive blade can do versus the non-aggressive blade. I took a close look at the difference and the Merkur which exposes much less of the blade and the angle appears to be different as well. I've since read up on adjustable DE razors and I suspect they do the same thing, they limit the amount of blade exposed. I also learned an aggressive blade is better because for multiple days of growth. That is me. I work from home and have a few times a week. If I worked in an office I would need to shave daily.

    I am happy I got the Merkur. I will probably pass it down to one of my kids, They too value sustainability. The more we can reduce plastic, the less we rely on oil, the lower our carbon foot print, blah blah blah. For me, I like the fact I can buy something made outside of China and save money at the same time. That is awesome! There are lots of made in China DE razors that will save you even more money if that is what you want.

    I don't like the crib on the handle. It feels like it will sleep. The knurled handle isn't very "grippy". I have software water and I use a real soap so things get very slippery. I've become accustom to it now but it was interesting at first to get comfortable with. I would very much like to have far more texture on the handle. I am curious how well it grips with hard water rather than soft.

    Full disclosure, I am just getting started with double edge (DE) shaving. I am doing this because I want to stop spending stupid amounts of money on five or three blade razors and buying and disposing of more plastic. Also, DE blades are suppose to be far less expensive and the math adds for for me. Investing in a nice razor will save money in the long run. Even a razor made in Germany.

    I want to first start off by saying that I think the folks who are writing reviews about this style of razors having a "learning curve" to learn how to use must be either crazy- or this is just the perfect razor.
    I am a 39 year old man- and before this razor I had never shaved with a old style double edge safety razor. From reading the reviews (on a lot of razors) I was really worried that I was going to nick up my face and bleed. Out of the box this was a true pleasure to shave with-- the shave is hands down the best shave I've ever had. Even my wife commented and I hadn't told her I had tried a new razor.

    From reading dozens of reviews I found this model kept coming up in reviews as a good choice so I took the plunge- and man am I happy I did. I also bought a high quality shaving soap and lather brush- and a stand to hold everything. Reminds me of a time from long ago. I almost didn't shave the first time as I was so worried that I was going to Nick myself and walk around looking like a 14 year old kid with band aids- but that didn't happen-- I followed all the good advice from other reviews and went at it.

    Here's a short list of what worked for me.

    A: Buy quality- I almost bought the $19.99 as seen on TV razor from the history Channels "Pawn Stars" reality show ( I love that show-) but after reading the reviews it was obvious that for slightly more money- just a little bit more I could do better. So go with quality- and get a HEAVY razor that is of heirloom quality.
    B: Really wet your face with HOT water prior to shaving
    C: Buy a really good shaving/lather brush with real animal hair- get it very wet and hot before shaving
    D: Buy a high quality shaving soap- and use hot hot water and your brush to really get a great lather. ( I just went with the #1 seller on Amazon and was very happy-- it's smoothness and scent was an instant hit and I knew all was good)
    E: Let the weight of the razor do all the work- don't pull the razor- just line it up, give a quick angle to have the blade make contact and let the weight of the razor do the work
    For the love of god please, don't ever shave against the grain of your face-- DUH!
    F: Use a good after shave/conditioner

    Overall all I have sensitive skin and coarse facial hair (think 2pm shadow). My first shave through I had zero issues. No burn, no nicks, no redness and no blood-- just a great shave. And for those who say it now takes them longer to shave I say NAY! My first time it took no more than 90 seconds longer than normal and that included opening the boxes putting in the razor blade ( which was brainless by the way just in case you're worried about it like I was) unwrapping the soap and the brush etc.

    This has become the way I will shave forever-- hell maybe in 100 years a grandchild of mine will have that razor in their bathroom and use it everyday- the quality is top notch. It's an heirloom and you don't even have to be close to a rocket scientist to use it. Don't let all the reviews of nicks and rash scare you- I'm convinced those reviews are from guys out there who may be a little clueless on most matters of hygiene.

    End note-
    I did a lot of research on which razor blades to buy- this razor only comes with one. I have chosen Astra blades after reading through many reviews and they work excellent for me.

    I did read some reviews that say you have to shave twice with this type of razor- I have not found that to be true- it seems that I get a great shave with just one pass- although I have tried a second pass from time to time but mostly because its just fun to shave with this razor and the brush and lather is so awesome. I do not see any really noticeable difference between one shave and two pass shaving- but that could be just me.

    If you are thinking of going to this type of shave- buy this razor and enjoy- Since I started shaving I've always used the cheap 8 pack generic throw away brands from rite aide--- never again. This razor is truly shaving the way it should be. I only wish I had figured that out 20+ years ago.

    Disclaimer: I am not an expert in shaving by any stretch. Shaving is obviously inherently dangerous- be careful shaving. Just because it worked for me out of the box doesn't mean it will for you. GO SLOW let the weight of the razor do the work. Don't cut your face up. If you think you can't handle it don't do it. It worked for me but that's no guarantee it will work for you- so don't go and get all pissy if you cut yourself- everyone's face is different. Read the reviews. Get a game plan-- watch some you tube videos. Buy good equipment and enjoy the shave safely.

    Hace dos meses me inicié en el afeitado clásico. Estuve viendo vídeos y buscando en foros sobre el tema. Me compré la brocha barata de wilkinson, un paquete de muestra de cuchillas y una maquinilla clásica kanzy. Fue un error. Compré la kanzy (que sale por unos 10 euros o menos y de las primeras al buscarlo en amazon) para ver si me convencía. Me cortaba afeitado sí, afeitado también, y a contrapelo no llegué a pasarla nunca porque hubiera rebanado el cuello a rodajas como en una charcutería. Si quieres empezar con este tipo de afeitados, te recomiendo que empieces por una maquinilla buena, como esta o las muhle/edwin jagger. Te ahorrarás dinero y sufrimiento por cortes! Se nota mucho la calidad y la suavidad del corte. Recomendandísima.

    Edit: Tras dos años con la maquinilla, puedo decir con certeza que es el mejor producto que he comprado para el afeitado. Sigue como el primer día, y usándola con cuchillas Derby premium, no recuerdo lo que era cortarme, tener la piel irritada y despertarme con el cuello lleno de granos y escozor al día siguiente. Animo a todo el que busque una maquinilla como estas a comprarla, porque cuando la tengas no volverás a usar una desechable y agradecerás haberla cogido.

    Ville ha en extra hyvel att ha i husbilen, så jag testade med en billigare hyvel för jag tänkte att det borde funka lika bra. Men jag skar mig fler gånger (4) vid mitt första test med den nya hyveln än jag gjort under hela året med min 34C (en gång). Så jag insåg att man vill ha bra grejer när det gäller säkerhetshyvlar...
    Så den hyveln slängde jag och beställde en sådan här 34C till.
