Celebrating More Than 140 Years Of Innovation
The Story of Helly Hansen

This Is The Story Of Helly Hansen

From our home in Norway, Helly Hansen has been making professional grade gear to help people stay and feel alive for over 140 years. It all started in 1877 when sea captain Helly Juell Hansen found a better way to stay protected from the harsh Norwegian elements. Captain Hansen and his wife Margrethe launched a business producing waterproof oilskin jackets, trousers, sou’westers and tarpaulins made from coarse linen soaked in linseed oil – and the legend was born!

Helly Hansen gear is trusted by professionals on oceans, mountains and worksites. As the apparel brand for Ski Professionals, you’ll find HH at more than 200 ski resort and guiding operations around the world, and worn by more than 55,000 ski professionals. Our sailing gear is worn by world-class sailors across all five oceans, and we’re a proud partner for some of the sport’s most iconic regattas and sailing associations. We continue to support Captain Hansen’s legacy through a long list of first-to-market innovations.

Captain Helly Juell

1877: Captain Helly Juell Hansen Launches A Legend

Norwegian captain Helly Juell Hansen wanted to find a better way to protect his sailors from the harsh, Nordic weather. By applying linseed oil to cotton canvas, he created supple, water-proof apparel. Soon after, he and his wife Margarethe started producing “oilskin” jackets and pants in Moss, Norway. Their waterproof gear was an immediate success, landing our first product award at the World Expo in Paris in 1878.

Helox Waterproof Fabric

1949: Helox - The Next Evolution In Waterproof

Helox waterproof fabric featured a thin sheet of translucent PVC plastic that was sewn into coats took to make them waterproof. It was a revolutionary technology that became the must-have protection for outdoor use. With a production of 30,000 coats each month, the success was almost immediate and was used by the Norwegian delegation at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki.

Helly Hansen Fiberpile

1961: Fiberpile - The Technical Midlayer Is Invented

Helly Hansen partnered with Norwegian Fiber Pile Inc. and developed the original Fiberpile – the first fleece. It featured a high warmth to weight ration and maintained its thermal qualities even when wet, making it a favorite of lumberjacks and outdoor enthusiasts. The concept lives on and the modern version of ProPile is still in production today.

Helly Hansen Technical Baselayer

1970: Lifa – The Birth Of Technical Baselayer

HH’s LIFA revolutionized the industry with the introduction of the first technical baselayers. LIFA moves moisture away from the body allowing users to stay warm and comfortable. It has been used by professionals on every ocean, many of the world’s tallest peaks and was included in Outside Magazine’s list of The Most Influential Gear of All Time in 2012. LIFA remains the cornerstone of what we believe is the best technical baselayer available today.

Helly Hansen Helly Tech

1984: Helly Tech - The Waterproof And Breathable Solution

Helly Tech waterproof and breathable fabric was launched in the 1980’s, winning awards and setting the new standard for performance and protection. It also provided the final layer for the 1986 introduction of the Helly Hansen 3-Layer System, an industry-first program educating people on how to dress for the outdoors. Today, Helly Tech fabrics are engineered to deliver the specific demands of professional’s skiers, sailors, and at workplaces around the world.

Helly Hansen Prowool

1990: Prowool - The Perfect Blend Of Lifa And Merino

The Prowool (renamed HHWarm) baselayer for cold weather conditions was launched in the late 90’s, combining Lifa Stay-Dry Technology with Merino wool for both moisture transport and added warmth. Designed for professionals facing the coldest conditions it quickly became the go-to piece for performance, warmth and comfort in extreme environments.

Helly Hansen Footwear

2004: Footwear - Expanding Into Professional Grade Footwear

In response to demands from professionals around the world, footwear was added to the product line. One of our first efforts was an award winning sailing boot. Today, Helly Hansen broad range of shoes and boot are worn by professionals and enthusiasts on mountains, oceans, streets and workplaces around the world.

Great jacket, came with loose stitches

Great jacket, came with loose stitches
Update: I emailed Helly Hansen support and they quickly replaced the coat. The entire turn-around was just a few days. The coat itself is great. I'm 6'1, 200lbs with an athletic build and the Large fits great. The forearms are a little snug, but still fit a mid layer sweater just fine. Will update again after using on the mountain this weekend. Really pleased so far. I would have given 5 stars, but (per the pictures) the stitching under the chest pockets was loose when the jacket arrived. Really doesn't bode well for the longevity of the jacket.

This jacket is super comfortable, warm and packed with useful ski features. I’m 5’7” 190lbs and the large fits me perfect. I was teetering between the HH alpha lifaloft and this HH alpha 3.0 but decided to give this jacket a try because it appeared that the only major difference was the insulation technology and this jacket was on sale for almost half the price when I purchased it. It appears the lifaloft also has a few minor cosmetic differences and a vent on the back but not much else. I absolutely love this jacket and am so happy I chose it. I know I would have been happy with either one but I couldn’t beat the price. I have a few other HH products and am impressed with each one. HH has great quality, technology, fit and style which I can confidently vouch for since I own a few of their products and frequently put through the paces during strenuous outdoor activities. Buy this jacket, you won’t be disappointed!

This jacket checks all the boxes for a high performance insulated ski jacket. It is now my go to jacket for in bounds/resort skiing. I have now tested it in wet snow and Very cold (-8 F) conditions and was completely dry and comfortable. The well sealed seams, quality zippers and powder skirt inside around the waist all work extremely well to keep the wind and snow out. It is also soft, flexible and light weight which makes it very comfortable for all day skiing and chair lift riding. The "Life Pocket" really did seam to preserve my phone battery life on cold days while running a resort app with GPS to track my ski stats. Best insulated jacket I have ever skied with in 45 years of gear testing. Bonus: My partner says it looks very good also. Should have bought it sooner.

This replaces a decade-old LL Bean insulated parka that is very warm. I use it for skiing with just a cotton long sleeve t-shirt. So far I've tried the Helly Hansen coat for walks at various temperatures. It keeps me warm with the same Tshirt even down to 25f which gives me hope it will be fine for skiing (I'll update later). Update: 22f and cloudy but stayed warm while skiing with just a long sleeve shirt and bib snow pants.

It has plenty of pockets. I like that the chest pocket zipper is super smooth for quick access to your cell phone.

The main zipper is swapped from what I'm accustomed to (the pull is on the left side) - seems like a trend lately. I have another cycling coat that is similar.

This coat fits very well. I'm 5'11" 190lbs and a large is pretty good. The sleeves are maybe a tiny bit long but not an issue.

The collar does have some warm fleece for keeping your face warm but it's not as snug as I had hoped. I'll probably wear a balaclava. Neck can get cold while skiing without a gaiter since it is roomy when zipped at the top.

Lastly the "alert red" is a bit orangey. I would have preferred the normal red (which is also sold) but it was $120 more.

I ordered this for my husband, and the quality, fit, and functionality of the coat is exceptional. I didn’t give it 5 stars because it unfortunately smells terrible. I don’t know if the down got wet at some point or what happened to cause it, but I’m really hoping the smell will go away after airing out.

Comfortable jacket and not too bulky, but pretty warm. All kinds of features, and plenty of pocket space. The jacket is very flexible and stretches with you as you turn in different directions, so it doesn't get in the way. Highly recommended.

My old ski jacket of over 10 years was falling apart & I needed a new one. I bought this and used it for several ski trips this past season. It kept me warm & dry even on bitterly cold and rainy days. It was a little too warm on one Spring day where it was in the 60's, but that's usually not the problem when on snow. O haven't had a chance to, and I hope I never need to, use the avalanche reflector, but it is nice piece of mind knowing it's there.

I haven’t put this jacket through its paces yet, but I don’t think I’ve ever had an insulated ski jacket that fit this good without restricting my motion. This jacket is described as trim cut vs. the relaxed/baggy fit of some of its siblings. At 5’ 11”/220lbs, I typically have to go a size up, but not here as the XL fit me perfectly. Not too baggy or bulky despite the Primaloft insulation. I wear a 17.5 34/35 in men’s shirts and the jacket and sleeve length were also spot on.

Hard to beat the price either!
