- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2022Size: LargeColor: Potent PinkI just received this anorak. So this review is about fit and functionality, which were important for me when looking for and trying on jackets. I’m 6’4” and fluctuate between around 185 and 200 lbs with a 42” to 43” chest, a 37” sleeve, and a 35” waist. I wear 34”x34” Levi’s as a frame of reference. This jacket fit great in the body, not fitted but not baggy either. There was plenty of room to layer if needed (I tried it on wearing a flannel shirt and a thick wool sweater to be sure). I didn’t feel any tugging when twisting or when rounding my back with both arms stretched forward, so it shouldn’t bind while on the slopes. Sleeves could be a bit longer for my taste, but they seem serviceable. I recently tried on a number of jackets, and this was one of the better fitting ones for me.
In terms of function, this jacket seems near perfect. I’ve been boarding for several years — mostly Adirondacks and similarly northern located VT, but also Colorado, Mont Tremblant in Quebec, and the Swiss Alps for two weeks — and I now know almost exactly what I’m looking for. I run hot. Anything other than a base layer and a T-shirt and I’m a sweaty mess in an insulated jacket. But I wasn’t sweating at all trying this shell on inside with an undershirt, flannel shirt, thick wool sweater, and shell bibs. So breathability seems great.
My wife and I also hate to stop other than for lunch, and I hate to carry a backpack as it results in a sweaty back. So I strongly prefer a jacket that can hold a couple plastic bottles of water if need be. The two internal mesh stash pockets seem like they’ll do the trick brilliantly, with room enough for the extra face mask and thin beanie I like to carry. I also need to carry allergy meds, inevitably end up carrying items for my kids or wife, and prefer to have my glasses in their case with me for when I’m grabbing lunch. So I’ve taken to wearing an Allen ultra light fishing vest under my coat, which is annoying. But this jacket has more useful, if not unequivocally more, storage space than my Obermeyer jacket with four outer pockets and one internal dump pocket. The Kangaroo pouch is especially helpful in this regard, allowing me to comfortably store my merino full-zip vest in the event I discover on-mountain that it’s not as cold as I thought it would be — which happened on my last trip. Finally, of the three anoraks I tried on, this was the only one with a long enough front zipper to allow me to access the chest pockets of my bibs, or my vest if I end up needing it. This longer zipper also allows for improved manual venting on warmer days compared to what seems to be the standard anorak front zipper design — quite important to me as I have been on-mountain with both pit zips open, both inner leg zips open, and my insulated jacket half unzipped.
This jacket essentially incorporates the most useful features of a full-zip jacket with the additional outer storage space and hand warming functionality of an anorak. I hope that Burton starts making all their GORE-TEX anoraks this way, or makes this one their flagship and offer it in more colorways like they do for their Cyclic shell.
