“Brown…engages intellectually with thorny issues involving language, school culture, and the more troublesome aspects of today’s parent universe.” —The Washington Post

To Raise a Boy is a clear-eyed and sometimes shocking view of the world that we have created for boys, and a call for change.” —Peg Tyre, author of the New York Times bestseller The Trouble with Boys

A journalist’s searing investigation into how we teach boys to be men—and how we can do better.

How will I raise my son to be different? This question gripped
Washington Post investigative reporter Emma Brown, who was at home nursing her six-week-old son when the #MeToo movement erupted. In search of an answer, Brown traveled around the country, through towns urban and rural, affluent and distressed. In the course of her reporting, she interviewed hundreds of people—educators, parents, coaches, researchers, men, and boys—to understand the challenges boys face and how to address them.

What Brown uncovered was shocking: 23 percent of boys believe men should use violence to get respect; 22 percent of an incoming college freshman class said they had already committed sexual violence; 58 percent of young adults said they’ve never had a conversation with their parents about respect and care in sexual relationships. Men are four times more likely than women to die by suicide. Nearly 4 million men experience sexual violence each year.

From the reporter who brought Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s story to light,
To Raise a Boy combines assiduous reporting, cutting-edge scientific research, and boys’ powerful testimonials to expose the crisis in young men’s emotional and physical health. Emma Brown connects the dots between educators, researchers, policy makers, and mental health professionals in this tour de force that upends everything we thought we knew about boys.

Johns Hopkins chair of the Department of Population, Family, and Reproductive Health Robert Blum says, “The story of boys has yet to be told, and I think it’s a really important story.” Urgent and revelatory,
To Raise a Boy begins to tell that story.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Insightful, sometimes disturbing... a groundbreaking sociological investigation [and] a vital addition to the conversation."
Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Deeply insightful...readers will leave this book inspired by Brown’s vision.”
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"This authoritative and accessible consideration offers insights, solutions, and hope."
Booklist (starred review)

“A groundbreaking exploration with clear recommendations on how to better raise and support boys.”
Library Journal (starred review)

"So many of the problems of our times can be traced back to our suffocatingly narrow definition of masculinity. We don't talk about this nearly enough. And when we do, we talk about it badly.
TO RAISE A BOY lays out the problems alongside the solutions, giving us tools we can use right now—to do better by boys and girls, men and women."
Amanda Ripley, author of the New York Times bestseller The Smartest Kids in the World

"An extraordinary expose on the issues that adolescent boys face. It is one of the finest if not the finest piece of writing that I have read on adolescent boys in the United States."
—Robert Blum, Professor at Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health

"We talk a lot about what men do to each other and to women, but we don't spend much time thinking about why men are the way they are. This book does that. It comes along at exactly the right time."
—Tony Dokoupil, CBS This Morning

"This book is necessary and the timing couldn't be more perfect."
—Mary Gordon, Founder of Roots of Empathy

"Brown offers a study of what it means to be a boy in America today—and the outdated notions of masculinity that continue to let our boys down."
Washington Monthly

A friend recommended this book to me. It is so insightful and easy to read. With a journalist background the author did tons of research and traveled across the country interviewing families and children who have struggled and been victims or perpetrators of bullying and other male dominated behaviors. As a mother with small children it has helped me change my perspective and my view about how I am raising my boy. Thank you so much! I plan to use this book as my son ages as a reminder of the consequences that male's face and the fact that if they cannot respect themselves how can they respect women and girls.

Few writers are able to engage on such a difficult topic in such a compelling and personal way. Given the heavy subject matter, one might expect this book to be tough going, but it was a joy to read. Emma Brown confronts a tough but critically important subject with thorough research, apparent empathy, and clear writing. Without taking sides or pointing fingers, she shines light on the struggles boys face in modern American society and makes a compelling case that we overlook these struggles at our peril. As the parent of a boy, I am so glad I read this book.

This book does a great job at describing the sexism in our culture. It points out that males are victims and not just predators. It explores many programs designed to modify the problem and it provides useful guidelines for raising healthy boys into healthy men.

For 20 years (or more?) we've all been fretting over girls and how to make sure they're empowered. But in the meantime, we've been neglecting our boys, whose needs are just as complex, and who have also been ill-served by society, maybe even more so these days.

Emma Brown spent a lot of time with regular boys from across all demographics, really listening to them. Her book is open-minded, open-hearted, rooted in facts and bursting with compelling stories. Brown is an investigative journalist, not a culture warrior; if you're looking for a political rant or a feel-good story, this is not that. It will challenge the way you look at the world, no matter what your politics.

She makes a really good point about why we should retire the phrase "toxic masculinity." And she revisits the complicated Aziz Ansari saga with new reporting that will give you a lot to think about.

As the mother of a teen boy, I read this book eagerly, mostly hoping that the techniques I've used have put my son on the path toward being a happy, whole person. I'm gratified to find some of my ideas reinforced through Brown's reporting, but also saddened that we continue to perpetuate stifling stereotypes as a society. I hope all parents, coaches, teachers, employers, politicians, and folks from all political backgrounds read this and make an effort to change behaviors and beliefs that perpetuate limitations for boys. Thank you, Emma Brown, for doing the work to open our eyes.

This is a must read. Impeccably researched and incredibly readable, it offers practical examples and thought-provoking analysis on how we can be thoughtful and intentional about raising compassionate and courageous children. This is an important and impactful book and one I could not put down.
