I purchased the XL size for my 16-yr old son's size 12 dress shoes as I've experienced the benefits of cedar shoe trees on leather shoes. Being a first time by of Stratton I was a little shocked by what I received. I felt like I was receiving a gift rather than a product. The packaging was a smart looking box with the trees wrapped in decorative tissue which delayed the unwrapping of a seriously well-made and good looking wooden shoe tree. The quality of the wood and the quality build simply rounding out a feeling of complete satisfaction with a purchase. So much so, I am writing a rare review.The XL size, which advertises a fit of 12-14, fit well and while I would like a little more spring tightness for the size 12, I get it that I'm on the bottom edge of the size range. Not a complaint but rather a "If I could have everything" wish.To the folks at Stratton; Well done and thank you for the rare and refreshing personal touch along with a quality purchase. I 'll be baaack...

    I bought a set of these to evaluate. The quality is high and they smell great with fresh cedar smell. Most of the wood was red cedar heartwood with a small amount of blonde wood. Any small knot holes were filled and sanded nicely. Need for filler was minimal. Surface was smooth overall. The spring holds the tree in securely. I wear a 9 1/2" in dress shoes, and these fit perfectly. I immediately ordered a second set. I now have them in four pairs of shoes, and they are working well. To remove the shoe trees, it's best to grasp the heel handle with the index and middle finger and pull it forward to compress the spring before lifting it out. I do find a knob works better in this regard, and I would prefer a knob over the brass plate. The plate could be removed and a knob added if anyone was so inclined. I still think they deserve 5 stars. If it was a 10 point scale, I'd give them a 9 for the lack of a knob for easy removal.

    I have a high quality pair of very nice dress boots that I try to maintain to a high level. I purchased this set of shoe trees specifically for those boots, and they work great.

    I wear size 13 shoes. I put these trees into a couple pairs of my dress shoes, and they do an awesome job at rehabilitating my shoes that haven't been taken care of until recently; they fit from toe to heel snugly.

    On the other hand, because of the toe section having to fill size 12 shoes, the toes don't completely fill the front of my shoes, where there is wrinkling along the sides of my shoes. I personally recommend getting split-toe trees in order to make sure that the front of the shoe is filled out, if that's what your looking for. I just recently purchased a pair of split-toe shoe trees from the same company and hope that those will do the job; will update later.

    However, don't let that detract from the product as a whole. These are great trees that will do their job. If you're looking for a basic set, this will do the job. Maybe you work as a cobbler and don't need to fill the toes out; maybe you just want to make sure that your shoes don't bow and aren't too worried about the wrinkles along the sides. These are great, and are better than trees that have a tiny heel section. Wider heels won't stress your shoes and are better for your shoes in the long run.

    ADDENDUM 1/28: For the last two weeks, I didn't have too much luck finding a pair of split-toe shoe trees that fit my shoes as snug as this original purchase. After purchasing three different shoe tree varieties from Woodlore to try out, I found out that the only pair of split-toe shoe trees that fit my laced shoes were their Ultra shoe trees. KEEP IN MIND, I still use these trees that I purchased from Stratton to go into my two pairs of slip-on shoes, which were the only trees to fit those shoes at all.

    The cedar is lovely and the overall shape and structure is great, just as expected.

    However, I was surprised at their size. For reference, my dress shoes are size 16 US and in comparing these size XXL shoe trees to the XXL Allen Edmonds I have from other dress shoes that came with the shoe trees, these were smaller, and are much more comparable to XL in Allen Edmonds.

    When I put these in the shoes I bought them for, they are stretched out as much as is possible, and if I were to hold the shoe vertically, the shoe tree, will slide down a full inch. So although I will use them, I am hoping they will do what they need to.

    Results are to be determined.

    Update: Played musical chairs with my shoes and shoe trees and turns out that I've got a pair that these fit better in, still a little bit loose but not sliding down an inch like in the other shoes I had put them in. :)
