UPDATE: 3/7/2025 3-1/2 years after buying the S4 Max it is still running. I was expecting it to die so bought a replacement in December - but the S4 Max keeps plugging along. Its cleaning power, convenience and longevity have exceeded all expectations!
I bought the Roborock S4 Max in August 2021. It was something of a splurge purchase - we didn't need it, theoretically it sounded nice, but I had my doubts about it. Wow. In the first month, it so exceeded my expectations that I was dumbfounded. But, I had worries about how long it would last. So, now, 30 months later, I'm writing a review. It's a well made unit. We have a 2-story house, mixed hardwood, tile and carpeting. It does a fantastic job on the hardwood and tile and a good job on the carpets in the bedrooms. For the first 2 years I carried downstairs once a week to vacuum downstairs, but then made the decision to get a second unit for the downstairs. Currently this upstairs unit runs 4-6 times per week. I clean the filter every other week. At this point, I've replaced that filter 4 times. I've replaced the rubber side spinner brush 4 times, and the main roller once. Having it run on a regular basis makes a noticeable difference in the dust in the air. It also cleans under furniture - beds, cabinets, dressers - that would never get cleaned so regularly.
Pros: Great mapping, easy to use, sturdy, big reduction in dust, cleans under furniture, and enormous time savings.
Cons: None.
I've liked it so much in August 2023, after 2 years of using the Roborock S4 Max, I bought a Q5+ with self emptying dock for our downstairs so I wouldn't have to carry the S4 up and down stairs. The Q5+ seems to be a tiny bit faster, with a bit better suction, but essentially is equally great. The self emptying dock is extremely convenient (though with the tiny downside of not seeing if you've vacuumed up any small important objects).

First time robovac user. Roborock S4 max worth the money!
Purchased a “used like new” item. Didn’t look used at all and according to the order it came from Roborock. The new one had a $70 coupon but this one still came out $80 cheaper than that one. I was VERY impatient. I only waited until it charged about two hours, to 65%. It got to wall mapping the last two rooms (bottom center and bottom right) before it had to go back for a recharge. Well a couple hours later I was impatient again and didn’t want to wait for a full recharge (78%), so I hit the “clean” button in the app and Piglet, yes that’s her name, announced “resuming cleaning”. It finished and again returned to the dock at which point it saved the final map in the app (make sure you turn on map saving!) I had to empty the bin three times in the process, about a third of the way through each time. Would I like a self empty unit? Yes. Was I willing to spend that much to get a self empty unit? Heck no. I was already skeptical and I figured I have to empty my Shark upright every time I vacuum so what’s the big deal? I named my rooms, set up a couple virtual walls and no-go zones. Pretty easy even on the small phone screen for someone with pudgy fingers. I’m pleasantly surprised. I didn’t expect the carpet to look as decent as it did when Piglet finished. It got under dressers. Vacuuming under the beds without moving them! Even squeezed beside the toilets. Make sure stuff is out of hiding places high enough for the bot to get under and it will probably figure it out! Oh and the thresholds. The apartment has about 3/4 thresholds if not closer to an inch - I hate them but I digress. The master bath it just went up and over easy peezy lemon squeezy! The main bath it went up and got stuck. I thought uh oh I’ll have to keep an eye on Piglet when she’s doing that floor. Nope - she backed up a little, turned to more of an angle, and up she went. Of course your results may vary. I was tempted to use the iRobot j7+, considering the warranty and maintenance parts and all - but dang after you cancel the membership it won’t work anymore?! Heck no. Especially being a first timer for robovacs, it didn’t seem feasible to spend that money per month just to end up with an unusable unit if I cancel the membership even after I’ve made enough payments to outright purchase the unit. The replacement items for Piglet are VERY reasonable (my first box set I just picked up for $20, and it has two brush rollers, four filters, four side silicone brush “things”, a mini screw driver, brush roller cleaner, and two other things I’ve no idea what they are). I’d recommend the Roborock S4 max. I’m happy with this purchase. And I hope Piglet is happy in her new home!
