Product Description

Protect yourself and others The next time you leave home with the essential mask Filter. Sold in a 3-pack, The essential mask Filter is designed to be worn with the essential face mask for high filtration efficiency to reduce contamination When in crowded areas. At Outdoor Research, we think that life gets better the minute we step out the door on a new adventure, no matter how big or small. We learn about ourselves, each other, and the environment every time we Get out. We come home a little wiser and stronger. We see the world more clearly, and that compels us to treat it better. More than anything, we're convinced that if we inspire more people to get outside, the world will be a better place. In 1981, a brilliant scientist and adventurer named Ron Gregg watched his frostbitten partner get airlifted off a Glacier on Denali. He'd spent months planning a new route in the purest style, skiing 100 miles from the road to the base of the climb. Barely halfway to the summit, their trip ended with the failure of a simple pair of gaiters. Stubborn to the end, Ron refused a seat on the helicopter and descended alone for two weeks, pondering what had happened. Somewhere along the way, he realized he could both Fix the gear problem and devote his life to pursuing his passion for adventure. By the end, he knew one thing for sure: he wasn't going back to his old job.

Great comfort and functionality, but filters are flawed - see review for a mod idea
This is easily the most comfortable, best fitting mask I've used in the last year. Strong nose wire, comfortable ear loops with a non-irritating rubber adjuster, roomy feel that covers from my nose to my chin and doesn't pucker or leave gaps. As a few others have mentioned, the problem with this mask is there is nothing in the instructions indicating that the filters must be cut open on the three un-sewn sides. There is no indication that the filter is composed of two separate layers. Even if you go to the Outdoor Research website the woman in the video makes it look like the filters just easily peel apart - that's not the case! I had to carefully cut each filter. This is a premium mask, I would expect the filters should packaged ready to go. It's bad enough that I saw that a few reviewers thought that you had to use two of the three filters to get full coverage (you don't, but you do have to figure out that the filter needs to be cut apart. I ordered some extra filters and it seems that the replacement filters don't have the same issue. I have not had the filter fall out as some others mention. It stays in the pocket reasonably well, although I do have to readjust occasionally. OR says the filters should last 5 - 7 days depending on usage. I'm hoping I can find a better filter supplier because I really like the mask overall, but it appears this is a custom sized filter. Having the filter on your face is annoying to me, so while I didn't have problems with it falling out, I decided to mod the mask by cutting a hole (see pics) so that I can insert the filter in between the two mask layers. I like this design much better, wish OR had made it like this in the first place. Hopefully my cut doesn't cause the mask to fall apart. As I write this (Dec 29, 2020) OR has dropped it's direct price to $15, but the Amazon price is still $20.

I bought this based on the reviews and my experience with Outdoor Research gear, which I've always found to be well designed, sturdy and comfortable. This mask is typical for OR gear, which is kind of expensive but well thought out and particularly well made. It covers quite a lot of the face, which helps to prevent air from escaping the sides or slipping in. The fabric is a soft, quick drying and very breathable polyester. It has pockets on each side to hold the sides of a replaceable filter and it comes with three disposable filters. It would be nice if it came with more, but they're easy to find and you'd want to order more anyway. Without the filters, the mask is very breathable--more than any disposable mask I have used--so it is nice if you are running or biking outdoors in an area with a mask policy. With the filter in place, it is still at least as breathable as a disposable surgical mask and better than an N95. There is a wire nose-piece for a custom fit and it is comfortable and is better than average at preventing glasses fogging. The straps are adjustable, which allows for a snug fit without making your ears sore after a few hours. My only complaint is that the disposable filters tend to slip over time and don't stay right in place, but they stay inside the mask. I've begun using some PM2.5 replacement filters that stay in place fine, though. I have to wear a mask all day at work, and I think it's both more comfortable and more effective that any of the disposable masks I've been wearing until now. The mask is relatively expensive compared to others, but you do get what you pay for. At the end of a long day, I'm glad I spent the 20 bucks on it and I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for a high quality washable mask for daily use.

I hate that masks are such a necessity these days, but the OR mask is the best that I've ran across. I wear glasses so its tough to get ones that won't fog up my glasses, and the nose wire on these helps a lot. Its also very comfortable with adjustable ear loops, and I took one to Mexico and wore it everyday on planes and buses for four months; even though I had brought other masks they were much more uncomfortable, especially after a while on longer rides unlike the OR mask which was more tolerable. I washed the same mask every night- and by morning it was always dry even with high humidity in the rooms I stayed in- and it held up great despite also being repeatedly crushed in my pocket. Though I like this mask has the additional pocket for filters, I just don't use them (even though maybe I should)- however I've yet to get sick irregardless even after being squeezed into a Mexico City subway car like a sardine, flying on an airplane for eight hours and riding on a very full Amtrak train with this mask on. I'm not saying you should trust your life to these masks so you can travel around the world in the middle of a pandemic that is continuing to get worse, but if I had only one mask I took with me and wore everyday- this would be it.

    Get this.

I am 5' 10" and weight 200 lbs. Most masks are either too damn small (those cool Keen ones) or floppy homemade numbers that look like they'll protect me from too much sunshine but not much else. Or I'm wearing a KN95, which when outside is a bit overkill.

The OR one is the perfect mix. It's a real cloth mask, meaning the cloth might actually catch some of my exhalations (if they're infectious) and actually has the chops (thank you cool tech fabric) to catch some of my neighbor's exhalations as well. But the add is not just that it's big enough for me, but that it fits close due to the bendable metal nose bridge inside (like a KN95). And if I'm in a situation where I'm not sure cloth is going to do it, and I don't have a KN95 handy, the filter inserts from OR add a snug, secure layer making me feel more....secure. They are shaped one way, so it's worth lining them up before tucking them in. And they can come loose and waddle around a little until you get the hang of them. It helps to cut the tag out of the fabric mask the second it arrives.

The only kicker? The price. $20 for a cloth mask is a bit of gouging. But OR shut down one of its gear factories to make nothing but PPP right now, so maybe this is helping ends meet a little. And all I will say is that the size and noes bridge fit is so damn good, it's worth it.
