Eating Out Loud: Bold Middle Eastern Flavors for All Day, Every Day: A Cookbook Hardcover – September 1, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
“Finally! Eden Grinshpan is letting us in on her secrets of her healthful and deliriously delicious cooking. Giant flavors, pops of color everywhere and dishes you’ll crave forever. It’s the Eden way!”—Bobby Flay
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR BY DELISH AND LIBRARY JOURNAL
Eden Grinshpan’s accessible cooking is full of bright tastes and textures that reflect her Israeli heritage and laid-back but thoughtful style. In Eating Out Loud, Eden introduces readers to a whirlwind of exciting flavors, mixing and matching simple, traditional ingredients in new ways: roasted whole heads of broccoli topped with herbaceous yogurt and crunchy, spice-infused dukkah; a toasted pita salad full of juicy summer peaches, tomatoes, and a bevy of fresh herbs; and babka that becomes pull-apart morning buns, layered with chocolate and tahini and sticky with a salted sugar glaze, to name a few.
For anyone who loves a big, boisterous spirit both on the plate and around the table, Eating Out Loud is the perfect guide to the kind of meal—full of family and friends eating with their hands, double-dipping, and letting loose—that you never want to end.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Cooking a recipe from Eating Out Loud is like flooding your kitchen with sunlight! The energy, warmth, and deliciousness this cookbook exudes is infectious and instantly puts me in a good mood. Eden’s food is seductive, unfussy, superfresh, and always flavor forward. Just like her! I’d happily bask in its glow from morning ’til night . . . and sop up every drop!”—Gail Simmons, food expert, TV host, and author of Bringing It Home
“This is the cookbook you won’t be able to put down, can cook out of every day, and comes from the heart and soul of the stunningly talented Eden Grinshpan. Deciphering the flavors and techniques of the Levant? Sure. Delicious recipes? Absolutely. And this book does more than that, taking inspiration from Eden’s childhood, where the kitchen was a safe place to express herself and passing that gift on to the readers and home cooks.”—Andrew Zimmern, traveler, chef, writer, and teacher
“I have always said that my next culinary adventure would be to dive into the foods of the Middle East. Learning a new cuisine can be intimidating, but what I love about this book is that Eden gives you the basics of typical ingredients, sauces, and flavor combinations to get you started and then turns them on their head to provide her own modern and fresh approach that leaves you wanting to explore every dish in the book.”—Missy Robbins, chef and owner of Lilia Ristorante and Misi; cofounder of Grovehouse

Growing up, I was lucky enough to eat dinner with my family almost every night.
Our ritual of sitting together never felt forced, and it was never just about sharing a meal. Everything happened at the dinner table—singing, laughing, crying, screaming, dancing—we’re talking complete meshugas (“crazy” in Yiddish). It was a place for me and my two sisters to share our stories and to perform, whether it was impromptu Disney sing-alongs or crazy interpretive dance numbers. The three of us pushed one another to be as loud, obnoxious, and over-the-top as possible, and the kitchen table was our safe place to express ourselves.
And, of course, there was the food. In addition to being a total saint who put up with our constant nagging (What’s for dinnerrr??), my mom had a handful of dishes that she did really well, like lemon-olive roast chicken or silky vegetable soups—whole foods cooked simply. (Just reading that sentence probably made her smile—Hi, Mom!) Then there were the nights when my dad would pick up something really special on his way home. We lived in Toronto, one of the most multicultural cities in the world, and we had the food to prove it. My dad loved introducing us to different flavors and delicacies from around the world, bringing home things like traditional Persian flatbreads, Turkish delight, and tongue sandwiches that most families I knew weren’t sampling in their kitchens. For me, eating these foods and experiencing all the diverse spices and ingredients that we’d be lucky to find in a run-of-the-mill grocery store (at least in 1990s Toronto) became a mission. So when I graduated from high school, I enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu in London.
It was a plan that sounded great in theory—it would be a way to learn some real skills, especially since no one I knew was looking to hire a professional lip-syncer, and I would get to cook while eating my way across Europe. But even though I fell madly in love with cooking, and at eighteen had no idea what else I was cut out to do, I knew that standing still in one place, working the same station at the same restaurant day in and day out, was not an option. All I wanted was to see the world, to chase all the flavors that my dad had introduced me to. And I wanted to share those stories! I knew firsthand how personal and connecting a meal could be, and I wanted to somehow re-create that with as many people as possible. I was always that girl getting all up in friends’ faces about trying new foods (“You HAVE to try this!”), and I got such a high off being the person who introduced them to the best babka/baba ghanoush/Bolognese.
When I called my parents to tell them that I was going to spend the next year traveling instead of getting a “real” job, I thought they’d freak out. They didn’t. Actually, the opposite. They encouraged me to go— just like they encouraged me to go to culinary school in the first place—and suggested that I bring along a camera to film the experience. (Are they not seriously the coolest?) Fast-forward two and a half years, and I had cooked, eaten, and lived in India, Southeast Asia, and Israel, soaking up every last aromatic rice dish, spicy braised stew, vibrant vegetable curry, dumplings, noodles, and pita everything. I volunteered with local organizations, tapped in to communities and their unique stories, and learned about the food cultures that tied it all together. It turned out my parents were right about what a smart move this was for me, and about filming it—I transformed that footage into a reel and ended up with dream jobs hosting shows like Eden Eats and Log On & Eat with Eden Grinshpan for Cooking Channel, and Top Chef Canada. And all that cooking experience made it possible for me to eventually open my very own restaurant, DEZ, in New York City.
But it was the last stop on my whirlwind Eat, Pray, Love tour that totally changed my life.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2020I'd been hoping to find a clear path to learning how to cook Middle Eastern dishes and wanted to learn about and understand how to use some new spices. Eden's Eating Out Loud has perfectly hit the mark. Her opening sections on "Your New Middle Eastern Pantry" and "The Essentials - Sauces and Dips" got me off on a solid footing. And now I'm having great success working my way through her delicious recipes. In my first week, I've made six dishes and every one has been serious, healthy deliciousness. I especially love her "work arounds" for when you don't have all of the exact ingredients or correct cooking pieces on hand.
Eating Out Loud is chock full of gorgeous inspiring photographs, and Eden's charming personality is clearly evident throughout. Okay, yes, I've been a fangirl for a while now... but even if weren't - I am Super Happy with this cookbook! I've already learned so much, I'm eating healthier and I'm once again having great fun playing in the kitchen!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2022I cannot say enough good things about this cookbook. It has us eating more vegetables than ever - the combination of the high-heat oven roasting plus any of the delicious sauces (?) have me going for seconds and thirds on broccoli and cauliflower. And, none of these are too difficult to act as mid-week dinners when we’re burned out from work. I’ll make the chimichurri on Sunday and have it on meat and vegetables for a few days, then maybe make the herbed greek yogurt to top roasted veg or salads for a few more days. Just so, so good and things you can mostly make with what’s at in your house/at the store (at least until you’re able to stock up on some new spices!)

- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2020I’ll be honest, I bought this book because a lot of people I follow on Instagram were raving about how good it is. Even though I collect cookbooks, I’m very choosy about what I buy and I wasn’t sure it would live up to the hype. Oh how wrong I was! This is an absolutely fabulous cookbook - interesting flavors & textures put together in a beautiful & delicious way. It’s honestly worth the price of the cookbook for the Salted Halvah Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe alone! I want to make everything in this book (very very rare I say that) and I can see making dishes from it for years to come.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2025I will admit, I was initially skeptical of this book when I first heard about it. I love Middle Eastern food--in fact, it is what I eat and make most often. I am also a huge salad lover and vegetable and salads are what I look for most in a cookbook. This book of course sounds like it was tailor made for someone like me, and yet I was a skeptic because I felt I already had this cuisine covered.
Eventually, I broke down and the book won over and I purchased it. I have since made 17 of the recipes, with plans to make my way much further in the book. I would say a few things about this book: The book is laid out in a easy to navigate format. Each section has its own table of contents, something that I now wish more cookbooks were doing.
This book really accomplishes something that I think a lot of books claim that they will do for you. It changed the way that I cooked and ate for several weeks while I made my way through the book. Instead of making a few main dishes throughout the week, I was instead making the sauces, pickles, and dips and then piecing together a few other things here and there to really create new meals each day. This allowed me to bring new life to my leftovers again and again, and there are several of her sauces that I will be coming back to over and over again, green and red zhoug to name just two.
I have really loved her zest for cooking and her enthusiasm and positivity in the pages throughout the book. She has some really great ideas and flavor combinations, and I now really trust her direction--something I don't always feel even with authors that I really like. She tends to nail the seasoning, the direction on how thick to slice something for maximal flavor and crunch, and I loved her edict on the proper way to build a chicken shawarma pita (she was absolutely right).
Shoutout to the honey and lemon semolina olive oil cake (that was a mouthful, and I think I messed up the proper name of this dessert), replete with cherries and a gorgeous whipped cream. This is a classic dessert that I have already made four times and really impressed people with just how delicious it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this cookbook
One of the best Middle Eastern cookbooks I have purchased in a while, with many excellent recipes and lovely photos. I especially liked the sauces and dips section, with interesting variations, like a special vinaigrette to use as a hummus topper and green tahini sauce.

This is my go to recipe book. The recipes are easy to follow and are a little different from many of the Mediterranean cook books. The instructions are clear and the ingredients are obtainable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mehr Familienkalender als Kochbuch
