By far my favorite VW to date. A relatively compact album with 10 songs (RT 48 mins). Each song is single-worthy. I thought about how many songs they had to write in total to arrive at these ten lovingly crafted gems. Not one second wasted in its entirety. It does not jump out at you after the first listening, but I dare you to stop playing it once you get hooked into the songs' intricacies.

As usual, Vampire Weekend never disappoints.

Love this album, in my top 5 from 2024. Vinyl sounds great.

This band has always been nothing if not intelligent. Although some dismissed them as pop one and dones with their first two albums, they quickly proved they were always a much more in-depth and complex than pop driven band with their third album "Modern Vampires of New York.". Their next album, "Father of the Bride" wasn't exactly a disappointment, it just wasn't much of a progression from MVONY either.

This new album, "Only God Was Above" is about as addictive as it gets. I simply can't stop listening to this album, the whole thing, no skipped songs. It's just that good. The first three songs are all absolute perfection, and you'll have them all stuck in your head quickly. There's no short way to say this: buy this album, then listen to it until it clicks.

In terms of songwriting and lyrics, this is a great one for sure, but there are times where the production gets in the way of songs. That heavily distorted guitar will make its way into the tracks like a crescendo. For the most part it’s ok, but for songs like Capricorn it feels like too much. Connect is awesome but the ending is so manic that I have a hard time finishing it, and the ending of Pravda once again introduces some loud atonal guitar that detracts from the track rather than adds to it. Regardless, the music is still strong enough to shine through the choices here.

This band imploded. That's right, they imploded after 2013's "Modern Vampires of the City", their masterwork. By the time 2019's "Father of the Bride" was released, it was just down to Ezra Koenig. That album was bloated and deviated drastically from the band's first three (how could it not?) I didn't enjoy that album as much.

Before listening to "Only God Was Above Us" I perused it's credits to see who was on it. I was happy to see the return of original band members, Chris Tomson and Chris Baio, thus making this Vampire Weekend album the first to feature three of the four original members since 2013's "Modern Vampires of the City".

Yet, this is a different band now. I don't know what their concept was for this album, but it was slow to grow on me. I also listened to each Vampire Weekend album sequentially prior to listening to the new album and then writing this review so that their music was all fresh in my mind. I really like the band's first three albums and these last two not so much.

That being said, this slow grower revealed it's hooks and melodies over time. In fact, I would tell you that of the ten songs I like nine of them. However, I had to weigh how much I liked them against previous Vampire Weekend works. There were songs here that I definitely liked such as "Capricorn", "Prep-School Gangsters", "Mary Boone", "Pravda", and "Hope". That's half the album. My least favorite song is "The Surfer". I'm still not decided about "Ice Cream Piano", either. After multiple listens I liked "Classical" and "Connect" as well as "Gen-X Cops". So, it's not a complete disappointment, but this is nowhere near the quality found on their first three albums: "Vampire Weekend" (2008), "Contra" (2010), and "Modern Vampires of the City" (2013).

As such, I'd give this new album three and a half stars.

Here's how "Only God Was Above Us" compares to Vampire Weekend's other works:

    2008 Vampire Weekend: Four Stars
    2010 Contra: Four Stars
2013 Modern Vampires of the City: Five Stars
2019 Father of the Bride: Three Stars
2024 Only God Was Above Us: Three and a Half Stars

In love with Ezra's voice. Classical is the song I play on repeat. Great album
Previously enjoyed Vampire Weekend from a far. Now I'm hooked.
Lyrics are meaningful. Fun, intellectual band

5.0 out of 5 stars Reseña del Doble Vinilo 'Only God Was Above Us' de Vampire Weekend
Reviewed in Spain on June 19, 2024
    *****
