Editorial Reviews

For over 20 years, The Decemberists have been one of the most original, daring, and thrilling American rock bands. Founded in the year 2000, The Decemberists’ distinctive brand of hyperliterate folk-rock set them apart from the start with the release of their debut EP 5 Songs in 2001. Since then, the band has released nine full-length albums that are unbound by genre and highly ambitious, ranging from Americana-leaning storytelling epics to elements of 70's prog, hard rock, and disco. After the release of 2018's I'll Be Your Girl, NPR Music wrote “Every band needs to refresh and reconsider its sound sooner or later, no matter how sharp it's gotten over the course of a long career — even The Decemberists, a band whose records have always come bursting with verve... I'll Be Your Girl captures a collaborative spirit that keeps the band sounding vibrant and alive.”

Now the beloved indie band is back with their first new music in six years, "Burial Ground." Already a fan-favorite after being debuted live last year, their latest single takes the overt fatalism of 2018's I'll Be Your Girl and infuses it with the jangle-pop of The Dentists and dreamy harmonies of The Beach Boys (performed with an assist from The Shins' James Mercer). "Burial Ground is in that time-honored popsong tradition, a paean to hanging out in graveyards," says songwriter Colin Meloy. "The melody hook came to me in a dream and I hummed it into my phone on waking. Most dream-songs are bad; this was the exception.”

I feel as though this is their best album yet.

I feel as though this is their best album yet.
I would say that over the years The Decembrist's soulful music has always circulated just on the outer edge of my listening hierarchy. I am deeply aware of their moderate catalogue and consider myself a fan of the band and their unique style of music but some releases just didn't keep engaged me as i would have liked. To me, this latest offering of music is on another level. Ambient, thoughtful tunes and melodies that hit all the right Decembrists' hooks with a punch. Colin Meloy vocals are as sharp and beautiful as he expertly weaves in between diverse melodies and the song structure of this latest release. There is a psychedelic vibe to their latest work. Joan in the Garden clocks at a respective 9 minute 20 seconds of pure psychedelic experience Decembrists style. The layers of music on this entire album astound me. There is a sense of majesty, an epic-ness quality throughout the whole album. Thought-provoking music and lyrics combined for a true journey into another world for those willing to take it. It's something only the Decembrists can do.Also, I find the album is reminiscent of other bands that have paved the way into our collective music psychic, but in a good way. I hear hints of Beatles, Jethro Tull, Supertramp, Blue Oyster Cult, Yes, and Pink Floyd. Nuff said? Also, (per usual) songs contain deep and intelligent songwriting. I am a professed metal head, but an occasionally listening trip with Portland's own darling Decembrist's is a road worth taking, especially with this release. A special thank you to the band for this one!

The Decemberists deliver another stellar effort.

First of all, the album cover and liner notes are fantastic. This is exactly why we prefer vinyl to other formats. The artwork and text are an excellent lead-in. The music has a very 'folksy' sound to it, mixed with a nostalgic 60s sing along vibe. There are songs that remind me of CSN&Y, some that remind me of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and others that have their very own, unique sound. They have used a multitude of instruments to create an awesome sound. Be sure to take the time to listen to and read the lyrics that have deep meaning. We love this album.

The fist 2/3 of the album will appeal to long-time Decemberists fans, especially the first 7 songs. After that, not sure if I would really recommend the rest of the tunes. Still definitely worth having.

I love this album. But then again I like all of their music. This album reminds me of the music from Picaresque and The Crane Wife more so than the later albums. Still, it has been a long time and does not disappoint.

Saw this group on CBS Sunday morning and instantly loved them.
They are SO good, chill, talented and easy on the ears!
I picked up on a little Jimmy Buffett but it doesn’t end there.
A great variety of musical styles melded on this disc.
After a hectic day it’s the perfect balm for your nerves.
Buy it! Support music that’s genuine and not cranked out by the Music Machine Industry.

Ever since I learned about the Decemberists I have fallen in love. Their poetry, the intelligence and wit of their lyrics, the amazing music, and if you haven't seen them performing live or on YouTube you simply are missing out of an amazing experience. It's obvious they all care for and love each other very much – their chemistry is palpable - and their music is simply phenomenal. If you don't know about this band you're missing a LOT. Can't recommend this enough.

Wish I would have gone to Reddit before buying the vinyl version of this album. Beautiful packaging, amazing performance and songwriting but the vinyl sounds like I have cotton stuffed in my ears. It is the only album I own that it sounds better streaming than on vinyl. Maybe I should haver purchased the CD?
( I purchased two copies of the double vinyl version, thinking the first was defective because of how bad it sounded. No such luck, they both sounded bad)
Using Ortofon Bronze cartridge, Anthem AVM90 , MacIntosh power amp, and B&W D3 speakers and the album has no high end.

Grandi!

The Decemberists best album for suite a while. Very varied styles, from Americana, Folk and almost Prog.
And the packaging is exceptional as usual!!

I've listened to the odd Decemberists song here and there for the last 10 years, but never invested in an actual album - until now. I bought vinyl, which is quite the investment (esp if you have spotify etc) but I am very glad that I did. This is quite simply a masterpiece. The first record hass zero filler, each song has its place and there are some songs on there that are some of the best pieces of music I've heard in decades. Joan in the Garden takes up the whole of the vinyl 2 b-side, with guest vocals from Mike Mills of REM it has a depth that takes my breath away.
