Editorial Reviews
The songs on ‘Funeral For Justice’ speak unflinchingly to the plight of Niger and of the Tuareg people. “This album is really different for me,” explains Moctar, the band’s singer, namesake, and indisputably iconic guitarist. “Now the problems of terrorist violence are more serious in Africa. When the US and Europe came here, they said they’re going to help us, but what we see is really different. They never help us to find a solution.” “Mdou Moctar has been a strong anti-colonial band ever since I’ve been a part of it,” says producer / bassist Mikey Coltun, who has been playing with Moctar since 2017. On the lead single and title track, Moctar addresses African leaders directly, bidding them: “Retake control of your countries, rich in resources / Build them and quit sleeping”. The song ‘Sousoume Tamacheq’ deals with the plight of the Tuareg people to which the band belong, and who are spread across three countries: Niger, Mali and Algeria.”Oppressed in all three / In addition to lack of unity, ignorance is the third issue.” Mdou Moctar in its current iteration is first and foremost a band. Alongside Moctar, it consists of rhythm guitarist Ahmoudou Madassane, drummer Souleymane Ibrahim, and American bassist and producer Mikey Coltun. The band got their start performing at traditional weddings. These are high energy events – amps are dialed to 11 and the whole town is invited to attend. Their first concerts in the US were sometimes, mistakenly, organized to be tame seated affairs. That’s no longer the case. Over hundreds of shows, they’ve proven themselves as one of the world’s most vital rock bands – a group rooted in Tuareg tradition, but undeniably its own singular organism. An Mdou Moctar concert is now recognized to be a place for dancing, if not full-force A1. Funeral for Justice A2. Imouhar A3. Takoba A4. Sousoume Tamacheq B1. Imajighen B2. Tchinta B3. Djallo #1 B4. - Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2025This is a fantastic album. Every song is excellent. Great songs, rhythm and musicianship. Highly recommend! Looking forward to the new release.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2025Matters not that I don’t understand the language of Moctar’s African nation - but the spirit and fire of the music is embraceable! Moctar is close to the guitar standard of Hendrix, Trower, Gary Moore, Jeff Beck, Peter Green and Keith Richards!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2024This is a hard-hitting new album from Mdou Moctar and his band, hard-hitting both musically and in terms of its political message.
From the title track:
"Dear African leaders, hear my burning question
Why does you ear only heed France and America?
They misled you into giving up your lands
They delightfully watch you in your fraternal feud.
Dear African leaders, hear my suggestion
If you do this we will all win
Retake control of your resource rich countries."
The songs are not sung in English or French, but rather the indigenous Tuareg language of Tamacheq. There is a song devoted to preserving the language. There is another song calling for unity among the Imajighen (Berber) peoples. The lyrics in English are included in the 12-page booklet.
This assouf (desert blues) music is two guitars, bass, drums, and vocals, produced by Michael Coltun, the bassist. "Funeral for Justice" is excellent, and takes a place alongside the band's previous albums and those of Tinariwen in my collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024The vinyl press is perfection. Better than digital. Following the lyrics in English is heartbreaking, while Moctar’s guitar accompaniments are mind blowing. Listen with good headphones and turntable. My old Fisher speakers, etc., were not up to the task.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2024If you like this group/guitarist then you will be a fan of this vinyl. It is quality and has a great presentation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A force of nature...
out of Niger in Africa. Big guitars, big percussion, and to get beyond the immense music and to the narratives of the songs - Full lyrics are included printed in English. Wonderful stuff..!

4.0 out of 5 stars Desert blues in ferocious form - step up in intensity
Agree with other reviewers this recording is a step up in intensity from previous albums. It kicks off fast and hard with the title track . The guitar is a ferocious barnstorming performance beautifully played and the recording engineer brings to the forefront so it has full intensity. I have numerous desert blues albums but this is one of best, when you want intense fast guitar in African music this delivers in spades . Excellent and unique, it’s like Lobi Traore guitar hero from Mali but on steroids. As others say lyrics are meaningful too
