About

Nick Cave on Tour

In a career that's lasted more than 40 years, indie rock elder statesman Nick Cave is renowned as a dynamic performer, his stentorian voice something between gothic storyteller, revival preacher and punk poet. Cave is also a fascinating speaker, vacillating between incisive and cryptic, deep and hilarious. Conversations With Nick Cave is an intimate night with the author/composer/post-punk hero, featuring performances of his decades-deep catalog alongside an unscripted, unrehearsed and unpredictable Q&A with the audience.

Nick Cave in Concert

The shadow of the gothically inclined punk-poet Nick Cave looms large over the history of independent rock. Born in Victoria, Australia, in 1957, his life was transformed by the first wave of Aussie punk bands like Radio Birdman and the Saints. He would soon be leading its gloomy, art-damaged second generation. As the leader of The Birthday Party, Cave and his band would release three albums — The Birthday Party, Prayers on Fire and Junkyard — between 1980 and 1982, dragging punk through rockabilly, jazz, blues, Captain Beefheart, French poetry and Southern Gothic literature. They broke up in 1983, leaving generations of goth-rock, art-rock and blues-rock bands in their wake. In 1984, he formed Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, a band whose vivid narratives and art-rock bluster have carried them through 16 studio albums. In that time, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds appeared in Wim Wenders' acclaimed film Wings of Desire, were covered by both Johnny Cash and Metallica and had "O Children" used in 2010's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1. Their documentary film, One More Time With Feeling, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Music Film. Cave also led punk-blues band Grinderman for two critically acclaimed LPs. Alongside collaborator Warren Ellis, Cave has been a prolific composer of film music, creating the soundtracks to The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Road, Hell or High Water, War Machine, Wind River and more. A true polymath, Cave has published two novels and has written screenplays (2005's The Proposition and 2011's Lawless). In 2017 he was named an Officer of the Order of Australia.

    Beautiful

by LB on 11/4/23Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I am just correcting a ridiculous error from my last review. I wrote Jonny Greenwood as the bassist, instead of Colin Greenwood regarding Nicks's solo show. Why? I can't explain it.... I love Radiohead and I know both are in the band. Anyway, Sorry for having a brain fogged nitwit, neural, short circuit moment. I was completely exhausted when writing and I remembered having a dull brain fog. Huge apologies. Note to self, REREAD before you hit submit. Thank you Nick Cave and Colin Greenwood for a beautiful performance at the Orpheum. I went Sat and Sun and it was epic.

    Excellent performance, wrong start time

by terribleclaw on 11/2/23Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Nick Cave was absolutely amazing. The start time shown on the ticket, however was wrong. That was the time the doors opened (7:30). We were early, for nothing. Seats were assigned. We could've shown up for the actual concert start time (9:00). That part was frustrating.

    Intimate and powerful

by Balcony Man on 11/1/23Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

The Orpheum is a small theatre with fantastic acoustics so the concert sound was crystal clear and Nick and Colin's performance was so fun and moving. The selection of songs was on point at a beautiful venue, with a variety of areas to chill out. So happy to have been able to attend this show.

    Late Start

by Kurt on 11/1/23Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Great performance at a great venue. I’m deducting a star because of the late start time. The listed time was 7:30, and in my experience at reserved seat venues like the Orpheum, that usually means that is the time the show actually starts. In this case, the doors opened at 7:30 and the show didn’t start until 9:00, which wasn’t made clear in the listing for the show. It would have been nice to know that in advance.

    Beautiful

by LB on 11/1/23Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

The solo show with Johnny Greenwood on the bass was beautiful. It was musical poetry. He is such an astounding storyteller and lyricist. Seeing him play piano and hearing his soothing, emotional baritone voice was a delight. Also there were some passionate fans yelling out often and some about the issues of these times and Nick was complete class act. Listening to the audience, responding with conscientiousness and also humor and continuing his music. As an audience member, and I was in the balcony, we all wanted to hear Nick's work, so we made it known to a very zealous audience member to be quiet and listen. The crowd was really passionate and vocal, telling him they love him and etc! Quite a few times it sounded like thousands were yelling out song requests. Nick has such a great sense of humor so it was wonderful to hear him respond to them. The audience started clapping on beat during a Grinderman song which an audience member requested to play. The spontaneous clapping to the beat was very cool. On that night after his encore, the same passionate fan in the balcony who we(audience members) all told to be quiet earlier, yelled out "God is in the House!"Nick pointed upward and sat down on the piano and played it. A perfect way to end that show.

He just gets better and cooler with age. Going to one of his shows is a spiritual experience.

Fabulous show, beef with the venue

by Cosmonot on 10/31/23Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

The show was fantastic, no complaints. But the venue failed to remove someone who repeatedly disrupted the show. Also, don't appreciate a 7:30 show that starts at 9 so you can sell more alcohol. Finally, I'm still coughing from the smoke machine three days later. Please stop.

    Audience member runs rampant

by Wanted to hear the performance on 10/31/23Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

Disgruntled audience members were allowed to yell at the performer for over an hour. It disrupted the performance and made the venue feel unsafe. This should have been addressed after a second incident, there were about 30 incidents before one of the audience members were removed.

    Brilliant !

by Duncan on 10/31/23Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

I have been a fan of Nick for almost 40 years. Finally got the chance to see him in LA and was not disappointed . A brilliant performance . Not too many artists get better with age but Nick Cave really has .
