About

Something in the Water Festival

"I made a promise to God that if I was able to see the world," Pharrell Williams posted on Instagram in early 2019, "I would bring the best of what I saw back to Virginia Beach." Williams is keeping his promise, presenting the result of his lifetime of travels and artistic collaborations to his hometown during the last weekend of April. He's calling the three-day festival of music, art, social consciousness, community engagement, and brand-building Something in the Water.

The festival unfolds along Virginia Beach's Oceanfront, with the main stage set up directly on the sprawling sandy beach. It spills into nearby venues, including the Convention Center. And it coincides with College Beach Weekend, which regularly brings to town tens of thousands of student revelers across the East Coast for a weekend of Spring Break sunshine and celebration. The 2019 lineup included Virginia Beach natives like Missy Elliott, Pusha T, and Dave Matthews Band as headliners.

Something in the Water Festival returns to Virginia Beach on April 24-26, 2020. Performers include A$AP Rocky, Baby Rose, Bae Worldwide, BANKS, Beck, Brittany Howard, Buddy, Chad Hugo, Chance the Rapper, Clipse, EarthGang, Foo Fighters, FriendsWithYou, Global Citizen, Gunna, H.E.R., Jaden Smith, Jozzy, JR, Kali Uchis, KAWS, KP The Great, LANY, Lauren Jauregui, Leon Bridges, Lil Tecca, Lil Tjay, Love Mansuy, Mahalia, Major Lazer, Mereba, Metro Boomin, Migos, Nelly, Nickelus F, Noodles, Pharrell & Friends, Playboi Carti, Pop Smoke, Pop-Up Church Service, Post Malone, Quinn XCII, Rema, Rico Nasty, Sabrina Claudio, Snoh Aalegra, SOSUPERSAM, Tank and the Bangas, The Head and the Heart, Tierra Whack, Trey Songz, Turnover, Tyler, the Creator, Usher, VENUS X, Wale and the Backyard Band, 070 Shake, 6LACK and 99 Neighbors. They are set to perform at the expanded festival, now with three beachfront stages.

    Underwhelmed experience

by 2 Up 2 Down on 5/6/23Virginia Beach - Ocean Front - Virginia Beach

I was very happy that the event took place without incident. This showed me that Virginians are coming out to have a good time and the City wanted to keep its people safe. I was underwhelmed with the rest of the event. When there was not an artist performing there was nothing to keep the attendees entertained. For example: there could have been local dj's, local artist performing until the next artist. This would have given local artist the opportunity to show case their talents and also keep the crowd engaged. I also did not like how the artist overlapped each other in which it made you have to make a decision who you preferred to see more. I felt so bad that I had to leave Lil Wayne's set earlier to make it to the other stage to see the next performer. I low key felt it was disrespectful to see a sea of people moving away from an artist who is providing their time and energy of entertaining us. Lastly, this event would be better during a warmer month as most Virginian's know that we have an extended Winter so the month of April is very fickle.

    Great festival

Great music, only issue was the weather but there’s no control over that.

    Pharrell does it every time!

by Raven on 5/3/23Virginia Beach - Ocean Front - Virginia Beach

SITW is always a great time with great vibes. I’ll just say this..everyone who was talking about how they’ll pass because the line up wasn’t good are the ones who were standing outside the gate asking if anyone was selling an extra ticket. I’m just glad Pharrell has decided to stop hosting the festival in April because the rain was in the way! Definitely going back next year.

    WELL Done

    by R. L. on 5/3/23Virginia Beach - Ocean Front - Virginia Beach

Everything, especially the organizers, security, and staff were extremely customer service driven. With the delays with Rain, we were fully informed of all the adjustments and was given specific instruction on updates throughout the entire weekend. Musicians and artist were on point with the music and sound systems. Everything stayed on schedule, the shuttle buses was executed perfectly. We are looking forward to next year as we see our community growing and working together to make Va Beach an area of love and community.

    It Was Okay

by Burn on 5/3/23Virginia Beach - Ocean Front - Virginia Beach

I like what Pharrell is doing for the community but the shuttle going back home was a nightmare and needed more organization. Didn't get home until 3am, we got rained on in line, we were literally in the water.

    Great festival

by Ed C on 5/3/23Virginia Beach - Ocean Front - Virginia Beach

This was my first mult-day festival. I am local to Virginia Beach but I still got a hotel at the beach to avoid driving each day. Even with a delay for bad weather on Friday and a complete wash on Sunday, my whole family felt like we a go our money’s worth. The vibe was very chill even though there was great energy! I do wish that this would move closer to summer. SITW has been in VB twice now and both time were not able to have all 3 days. I will be back next year, hopefully in May instead of April.

    2nd SITW

by DonteTheSinger on 5/3/23Virginia Beach - Ocean Front - Virginia Beach

I had a much better time when it was in DC because it was in June and the weather cooperated. It was too cold on the beach and you couldn’t re-enter after 6. So I couldn’t go change or get my hoody. Other than that, it was amazing! I can only imagine how better it would have been if the weather was better.

    SITW '23 Had a blast

by Mrs2Classy4ya on 5/3/23Virginia Beach - Ocean Front - Virginia Beach

The food vendors were definitely on their business out there. I do appreciate the diversity of the selections to choose from. Vendors did mention having to go up on prices because SITW get paid off the top but every vendor gets plenty of exposure and the money is there especially for this 3-day festival. I like that they had BAR vendors that had options of non-alcoholic beverages as well as alcohol. Doodles was passing out free ice cream. White Claw also had tasting stations on top of being able to purchase from their tent or vendors that sold it separately (first time trying White Claw) and I buy it again. With 5% alcohol it was my only alcoholic beverage the entire festival, light flavorful taste and nothing to have you buzzing. Like all events there's pros and cons and takeaways. I hated the shuttle service issues 2nd day of festival. Virginia Beach provided school buses and their were contracted private shuttle busses. 3-day shuttle passes were $50 per person. They give you a wrist band you have to wear the entire weekend on top of your SITW wrist band...their were huge groups of people being corralled like cattle into a tight space when trying to get via the maze of the makeshift ride separators to catch the shuttles. No order what so ever...a lot of hurry up and wait. Had us all waiting more than an hour confined trying to make it to the actual shuttles. Mind you they were only supposed to be available up to 60 mins after the final show, so that caused lots of anxiety and panic. Better contingency planning should be done to avoid this issue in the future. Concept was good, just a tad poorly executed. Personally preferred the private shuttles over the school buses due to comfort and actual individual space. Truly thankful for this festival overall for a 3-day music festival it's well worth it. Some of my favorite acts were 3rd Eye Blind, WALE, Jasmine Sullivan, SWV, Summer Walker, Pharrell & Friends and many others. Enjoyed the drone show also. Can appreciate the drones better than fireworks and feel that's better for people who have PTSD to loud explosive noises. Thank you Pharrell for bringing something of this magnitude to Hampton Roads and continuously bringing exposure, talent and money into Hampton Roads. (We Love You). There's also been no major issues when it comes to behavioral or disturbances. Huge Plus factor to take away. Appreciate Virginia Beach police also for being on top of directing traffic and providing eyes from the roof tops to the ground. Grateful for all emergency EMT people that aided in making this event a success as well. Pack lots of patience and remember to be good to one another. Sad the weather decided to turn-up like the festival itself but overall it was a great time and I'd love to attend again...maybe have it in mid May or June to avoid the chances of bad weather. Thank you. "SITW!!!!"

What a great experience at SITW! suggestions ...

by Leya on 5/3/23Virginia Beach - Ocean Front - Virginia Beach

I give it a 4 out of 5 for a few reasons. The weather but that was out of anyone's control. I was seriously impressed by the organization as chaotic as it was. Thank you to Live Nation, Pharrell, the artists, the city, and all the people working that festival! The people attending and working the event were amazing. Artists I never even heard were surprisingly fabulous. Arcade Fire, Jazmine Sullivan, Lil Yachty, MIA, Wale, Kehlani ... impressive. Definite highlights - Jonas Brothers, Diddy, Busta Rhymes, De La Sol, Chris Brown, Pharrell. Loved it! But all the rumors that Beyonce, JayZ, Rhianna, Drake, Missy Elliott, and 21 being there was just not right. I would have loved to see them especially Missy. Now, I didn't get to see SWV and Wu-Tang Clan. Maybe the last day might have had a bunch of other artists show up. But I get it, the weather and time was not working with us. We were just lucky to get two days and some awesome artists. As for the parking situation and all that walking, that was a little crazy. My feet are still hurting. Lol. The city needs to work with whatever it costs to let these people park in any city spots especially the 3hour side street slots for the whole event. 19th & 20th should have been a solution but it was closed off. Also, you should look into having people park at the elementary/ public schools nearby and use private shuttles or the trolleys to bring to the oceanfront. Those lots were totally empty. And the prices between $20-$75 for parking was interesting. Please look into this. Also, there should be a better solution for water stations or just hand out free water. I would also suggest putting tv monitors to watch either stage in the food section. I would have liked to just sit there to see both shows. Please have a solution to the whole cell tower issue. No one can get a hold of anyone there. Sell or suggest walkie talkies if you're gonna cut off the cell service. And, the merchandise needs to be available prior to the festival. Possibly choose vendors who can print the orders and mail it. There's a limited amount at the festival and different designs compared to the app. You could make more in advance if this is done prior to the festival. The VIP section was way too big and empty. Make that area a little smaller for all the GA tickets. The fences everywhere were too much. People were corralled like sheep and cattle going back and forth. At one point, they were just jumping the fences. But for the most part, I was grateful no one was hurt and people behaved. My daughters and I had a one in a lifetime experience especially in our hometown.
