Product Description

A sustainable reimagining of our best-selling ultralight down hoody. Because a hoody is supposed to keep you warm (surprise—this one does!) but what about one that won't heat up the atmosphere? We think this flying space rock is pretty awesome, and because we want to keep Earth awesome, we made the Ghost Whisperer/2, which uses trash instead of making more. With completely recycled face fabric and responsibly sourced, RDS-certified down insulation, this layer brings the heat where it's supposed to.

Excellent lightweight and water resistant jacket

I already own a Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisper jacket without a hood. I adore it. Only problem is you really don't want to get down wet so I would bring a rain jacket to wear over it if it started raining. But I don't like to carry things or tie them around my waist. Then I thought maybe I should get a version of the jacket without down and instead uses synthetic insulation, so I did. (ghost shadow version). I can't tell you how happy I am to have both versions, the one with down and this one without down that I can wear when it's raining. It's extremely lightweight, comfortable, water resistant, cuts the chill from the wind. I have the hooded version and I think that part is just okay... that part could be smaller or have an adjustment to tighten it, but it works and stays up over my head. That jacket in NOT noisy at all. It has two nice sized pockets on the outside and 2 huge pockets on the inside. It was some elastic in the sleeve cuffs but not tight which is the way I like it. It keeps me warm in 30 degree weather. I absolutely love this jacket and so glad I decided to get both the ghost whisper and the ghost shadow jacket, This review is about the ghost shadow jacket.

I purchased this jacket for a 2023 thruhike of the Colorado Trail and it was one of my favorite pieces of gear. As an ultralite backpacker, I wanted something that struck the perfect balance between weight and warmth and the Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer 2 did just that. I was able to sleep in it most nights without getting too hot (although I'm a cold sleeper), and I also used it many mornings when it was chilly out.

Despite wearing this jacket almost everyday for 3 weeks of hiking 20+ miles every day, it never smelled and still felt pretty clean each day. I will say that the fabric is quite thin and could be prone to tears/snags, but I just tried to avoid walking too close to branches and never had any issues.

Months after the trail, this jacket has also been my go-to warmth layer for backcountry skiing. Again, it's lightweight, doesn't take up much room in my pack, and it warms me up immediately on even the coldest days in the backcountry. Highly reccomend!

The perfect down hoodie

I got an XL and it fits perfectly with room for a midlayer underneath (like a silk t shirt and a mid weight wool knit pullover - possibly a light fleece that is fitted). I have 38DD chest and 45" hips and it is nit tight anywhere yet is also form fitting somehow, not at all bulky, and its actually flattering. It is warm (with those midlayers I'm fine in the 50s standing still, maybe 40s walking), and feather light. The zipper is tiny as I expect in an ultralight garment but seems good quality. The stitching is all first rate. It weighs 7 ounces and stuffs into a pocket, which makes it a perfect "just in case" jacket on a trip. If you have the money to spend, this is the jacket to get.

Pricey - but do love

Some comparable cheaper options are a fraction of the cost. But I really wanted to experience a high quality, ultra light puffy so bought this jacket on sale for $190. I'm very happy with it! It weighs slightly less than my Macpac puffy and offers slightly more warmth. However, when this jacket does eventually wear out, I'll probably purchase another budget option, but for now I'm stoked to have such a lightweight 3 season puffy! The quality is there, and I'm enjoying the insulation around the wrist area, the lightweight zipper, and the overall decrease weight.
