Bought for camping trip to Grand Canyon this October. First night in my North Face North Star tent with a thick ground tarp under and the extra tent foot print in place, I used a solid foam pad as a ground insulation with two inflatable backpacking air pads centered over pad. I then topped with my old Colman canvas wide bag on top as my bed base for the new North Face 0 zero degree bag!!
First night temp was around 20 degrees and I thought I would freeze to death!! I got up and shook the bag out good to make sure the down was evenly distributed and froze the rest of the night.
The second day I inserted the North Face bag inside the old Colman bag and I was warm the rest of my trip, although the first night was by far the coldest!
Other problems with this bag; reviews said it was roomy and you could sleep on your side!! This is not true as I am 143 lbs and 5’8”, not a large guy and I could barely move at all! I felt constrained and like I was a mummy! Not what I wanted.
Other huge problem was the zipper! As an old guy I have to wake early and head to the restroom the first day the zipper snagged the overlapping seem and was very difficult to unzip from the inside! This happened each morning, getting worse each time. The last morning I had to rip the zipper open to get out of the bag before I wet myself.
So this old man will spend more $$ for a better winter bag and if you like to move around during sleep get a wide bag! I will look at some of the new winter bags with pads built in, guy next to me had one, said he was toasty!
