- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2021I got it to replace a 40 year old LL Bean "igloo" tent (looked to be made by Eureka as well.) I camp solo via motorcycle so only go out if 100% guarantee of dry conditions. This 7'x7' square format is more practical than the sextagonal igloo. I can lay the air mattress out across the back wall and have a huge solid open area to get off the bouncy mattress & get un/dressed, sort the goods out, etc. With the igloo I had to lay out the air mattress diagonally from "point to point" and the two open areas were not as useful as the one large area I now have. It has a 2 pole design (as opposed to 3 poles with the igloo) and an inch or two more height and a much quicker set up using just 4 pegs. There are 2 poles that go with the fly. Used it the other night for the first time. Nighttime temps were in the mid 50s so I left the fly off as it improves ventilation, reduces any chance of condensation on the inside walls and gives more of a roomy feeling. Found it easy to get in and out. Better for me as a fat geezer. The hanging storage net is a non issue as I hang a small battery powered light from the central ring, using the net would interfere. It is large enough to hold a good bit though. All sewing and detail work is top notch and there is no sloppiness in the fabric to flap in the wind or look like insufficient care was taken in design or construction. I got the 3 person version rather than the two person as there was little difference in price or weight and I am glad I did.
I had purchased a Eureka solo Backcountry tent years back as it was very compact & light. The design & construction on that was also top notch BUT the 30" width disallowed the use of a 39" wide air mattress and I found too many difficult contortions were required to get in & out. Did like the aluminum poles on that one but hopefully these fiberglass poles will hold up. That tent cost $149.00 about 5 years back. The Tetragon was about $112.00 with free shipping. It is about 2 1/2 times the area and taller inside. What a bargin
I would have to be very close to anyone who shared this tent with me and hard to imagine 3 in here without coordinated breathing and abstaining from chili for dinner. BUT if you can live in a 7x7 area, this is a great tent. I guess 2 people could split up the sections and make it work as a roomy backpacking shelter. Well made and comfortable to cocoon in. I will never get to test it in the rain but it appears it will be dry inside. However, the fly overhang is minimal and there would be no way to have a "vestubule" to store any gear or boots out in the weather. There would also not be any protection from rain entering when one opens the doorway getting in or out. Not an issue for a dry weather camper as myself but something to consider.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2024I've been using a Tetragon 3 for about 20 years. It has held up great. I'm sure mine has seen over 200 nights of camping over the couple decades I've had it. I loaned it to some kids a few years ago, and they put some small holes in the mesh; I put some duct tape on both sides of the holes and haven't had any problems (or even had to replace the tape). The kids also broke one elastic band; all the other bands are still working great. I found a new Tetragon 3 on sale this past summer, and I bought it because I'm afraid my old one will give up the ghost. But I haven't had to switch to the new one yet. I bought one for a HS graduation present for a friend's son. I recommend this tent to everyone unless you are doing hard-winter camping.
Also, this is the easiest tent to set up, bar none. The stand-alone structure and the external-hook attachment to the poles is the shebang. All these new-fangled contraptions with "vestibules" and more poles than a fishing equipment superstore? Nope. Simple is best, especially when you have to set up in the dark. Or on solid rock or soft sand.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2024This tent has design flaws. It's like someone that never went camping designed it. The bottom of the tent is the same fabric as the top instead of a rugged tarp material. The tent is in no way water resistant. I would not recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2022When it is windy and sandy, sand will enter the tent under the rain fly.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2022Good price. Quick delivery
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2024We have had a Tetragon 9 for 25 years. It is still our favorite tent for 1 or 2 nites in a campground.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2023I own a Eureka 3 person lightweight tent, purchased 10 years ago, before the marketing department bought into the elitism of backpackers who didn't think the term "backpacking" was enough to differentiate hiking in to sleep miles from the road, vs setting up a tent in traditional, family-style campground.
It's a shame, because the tent still holds up. I wouldn't buy it again, knowing Eureka has gone all-in with those who use terms that suggest people in campgrounds aren't really camping.
