Why We Like The Altra Olympus 5 Hike Low GTX Hiking Shoe
Like all Altras, the Olympus 5 Hike Low GTX features the balanced cushioning, gender-specific fit, and Footshape Fit that's made the brand a go-to for many runners who want a more natural stride. However, the Olympus 5 Hike is made for hikers—not runners—thanks to its durable leather uppers, waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX membrane to keep our feet dry, and grippy Vibram MegaGrip outsoles for premium traction on wet and dry trails. It also features max cushioning, which absorbs shock and takes some of the edge off the shoe's zero drop construction.

Omgheeeeee Winner Winner!!
I am a Respiratory Therapist and I work in a Level #4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Things can get pretty busy, lots and lots of foot work involved. I was extremely impressed at the comfort level of these shoes as soon as I put my feet in them.

PT Recommended
My physical therapist strongly suggested I get shoes with the best possible structural support for my recovery from a badly broken foot (many bones), ankle and leg. He recommended Altra. My foot is learning how to be a foot again!

Terribly disappointed
I usually wear Lone Peak's hiking. I wanted an Altra that was waterproof . In the store the Olympus Gortex felt fine. The next day hiking I had to tie the shoes multiple times even though they were double knotted . The arch of the foot was so uncomfortable. The balls of my feet kept getting cramps. Never has this happened in an Altra .

Finally, NO foot pain!!!
Game changers. For the first time in 10 years, I have no foot pain. Bought these and went straight to Patagonia to backpack for a week. They performed like a dream. Also, dried quicker than expected after jumping through water falls. Can you please make a clipless bike shoe for me?????? ;)

Keep my feet warn and dry
I have had these since fall 2023, I have worn them all winter even in snow and rain and they keep my feet warm and dry, the only time I went to boots was when we had inches of snow. Very comfortable. I will buy again.

Not what I was hoping for
Lone Peak 7 is the only shoe I have found with a wide enough toe box. I was hoping these would offer the same but with more cushion and GTX. They actually feel less cushioned, and the heel slips.

Give 'em a Chance
This is about my 5th pair of Altras. I read a lot of reviews for these shoes and some people just hated them, while a few others loved them. They were on sale for a brief period of time, so I decided to take a chance on buying them. When I first got these shoes and put them on, I was furious! I was really mad because, as I walked around, they rubbed at the back of the heel. I kept wearing them (on my day off) around the house, and they eventually stopped rubbing and became really comfortable. (I have no idea why!) After that, I wore them all week at work with no problems. The only complaint I have is that they do seem slightly short. When standing or walking there isn't much room in front of my toes, which makes me think the sizing is slightly off. I wear a European size 37 (similar to 6.5) and at a size 7 these should fit perfect, if not slightly roomy. I ride a bicycle year round in the American midwest, and these shoes are keeping my feet nice and toasty without shoe covers, so far. I've worn them riding down into the 30s (•F) and not felt cold. Also, my feet don't get clammy, so they are doing their job well and my feet are comfortable all day! My only regret is that I didn't buy the boots! It would have been nice to have some ankle coverage, but I may end up getting a pair of those next!

I love these shoes
I have had these shoes for several weeks. They are comfortable, if a little heavy, do not slip on wet asphalt, and they keep my feet dry and WARM in the winter with temps down in the 10's it is nice not to have to wear extra socks.

BRING BACK OLYMPUS 4
Bring back Olympus 4. I bought Olympus 5 and hiked my usual mountain trail. The shoes were beginning to hurt my feet. They were too narrow, not enough padding, and just uncomfortable. When I got home and took them off, my feet hurt so bad that I could hardly walk. I checked the inside of the shoe and saw that the lining was coming apart. Very poor construction. I also had to buy longer shoe laces. I finally found a shoe that fit perfectly, and then the company changed the shoe construction. I had bought three Olympus 4 shoes in the past and LOVED them. I will have to start looking at other brands. How sad.

Stays Dry
I bought the Olympus 5 GTX for my 2-week trek in Iceland. My feet stayed dry and warm through creek crossings, torrential rain and waterfall exploration. They feel just like my Olympus 4s. I still use dirty girl gaiters and was disappointed that they are no longer equipped for gaiters. I cut the gaiter clips off an old pair of Altras and sewed them on with dental floss. Then I glued velcro on the heels with crazy glue.
