The “worthy and frightening sequel” (Stephen King) to the acclaimed and “unforgettable” (Harlan Coben) New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling novel Chasing the Boogeyman.

Back in the summer of 1988, a young Richard Chizmar was catapulted into the center of a living nightmare as the serial killer Joshua Gallagher—dubbed by the media as “The Boogeyman”—stalked his tranquil Maryland town. A lot has changed in the intervening years.

These days, Chizmar enjoys a certain level of celebrity and notoriety himself, being the only person that an incarcerated Josh Gallagher will speak to on or off the record. Chizmar likes to believe that he’s doing the world a public service by visiting Gallagher in prison, as there are plenty of other nameless victims out there who Gallagher might finally admit to killing and bring closure to grieving loved ones, and a dark rhythm and routine begin to take hold. But Chizmar eventually finds there’s a price to be paid for dancing with the devil, when a masked figure with all the hallmarks of Gallagher’s reign of terror from thirty years ago now leaves a horrifying calling card in front of Chizmar’s home, and it’s clear there’s a new player on the board in the ongoing game that the Boogeyman controls…

A riveting, haunting sequel to the
New York Times bestselling thriller Chasing the Boogeyman, this is a tale of obsession and the adulation of evil, exploring modern society’s true crime infatuation with unflinching honesty, sparing no one from the glare of the spotlight. Will those involved walk away from the story of a lifetime in order to keep their loved ones safe? Or will they once again be drawn into a killer’s web? As the story draws to its shattering conclusion, only one person holds all the answers—and he just may be the most terrifying monster of them all.

Becoming the Boogeyman

Editorial Reviews

Review

Becoming the Boogeyman is a worthy and frightening sequel to Chizmar’s Chasing the Boogeyman. Terrific storytelling. You won’t be disappointed.” —Stephen King

Becoming the Boogeyman is a compulsive, utterly immersive twist of fact and fiction. Richard Chizmar masterfully blends reality and imagination to deliver something wholly original and totally gripping from start to finish. I couldn’t stop turning the pages, even when I wanted to turn away. Don’t miss this edge-of-your seat chiller that will keep you guessing—and guessing again.” —Lisa Unger

Becoming the Boogeyman is at times almost unbearably suspenseful and at times incredibly poignant. Richard Chizmar delves deep into our worst fears and touches the darkness that lives there. An amazing book.” —S. A. Cosby

Becoming the Boogeyman is Richard Chizmar at his most original and creative. A book that is as fun as it is smart and scary. I love the Boogeyman books so much!” —Caroline Kepnes

“A deliciously chilling follow-up to
Chasing the Boogeyman—suspenseful, unsettling, and absolutely compelling. I couldn’t put it down.” —Meg Gardiner

“Richard Chizmar has pulled off one hell of a sequel, delivering the rare thriller that is truly original and unlike anything else you’ll read this year. While the tension is high and the chills plentiful, it is the human heart of the book that lingers once the tale is told.” —
Michael Koryta

“Sinuous and twisting and utterly unputdownable,
Becoming the Boogeyman slices deep from the start and twists the knife until the very end. I was terrified, moved, and gripped by turns. A tour de force.” —Catriona Ward

Chasing the Boogeyman was brilliant. Becoming the Boogeyman is even better. An engrossing mystery, a chilling portrayal of obsession, and a terrifying take on how we commercialize evil and condemn the innocent. Fascinating, gruesome, heartbreaking, and chilling. This is masterful storytelling that will hold you in its icy claws to the very bitter end.” —C. J. Tudor

"Richard Chizmar knows his way around a frightening story...deeply unsettling...[he] blends reality and fantasy in a way that can only be described as intoxicating: heightening your emotions, blunting your skepticism, and luring you into trouble."
Vanity Fair

“Like its predecessor,
Chasing the Boogeyman, this is a novel that masquerades as fact, and does so to startling effect, the reader never quite knowing what is fact and what is fiction. And like his friend and former co-author Stephen King, Chizmar is a master of capturing the horrors beneath the surface of suburbia. King would certainly approve here—this is stunning.” Daily Mail (UK)

Amazing sequel, must read series.
5 out of 5 stars
Amazing sequel, must read series.
This story picks up sometime after the conclusion of Chasing the Boogeyman. The serial killer, Joshua Gallagher is behind bars.....all is over and life moves on, but was it truly over? Richard Chizmer has been continuing to conduct interviews with Josh, anxious for answers. Through their bizarre conversations, Josh keeps hinting that he is becoming something special, a bit more than human perhaps? Then Richard is walking his dog one morning and finds a garbage bag on the sidewalk by his house, nervous as to what is in it, he calls the police. It is as bad as Richard feared. There is a new string of killings, is it Josh somehow, though he is locked up? Is it a copy cat killer, one of Josh's many fans? The media storm begins and Richard's family and home are under seige. Many blame Richard because of the book he wrote on Josh's killings. The end of the final chapter has me so excited (I won't spoil it though). This sequel is told the same as the first story, as a true crime with the author himself and his family and many of his friends as characters. Very unique concept which I thoroughly enjoy....and I did check Google several times to see if places and people showed up as real. These stories a amazing and I pre-ordered Becoming the Boogeyman before I was approved to read the e-ARC. After reading it, I would have wanted to own it anyway. Thank you to Netgalley, Gallery Books and Simon & Schuster for the opportunity to read this next in a now favorite series.

I don’t mind admitting to being a devoted fan of Richard Chizmar. Don’t mind at all. Fact is, I’ve been enjoying the fruits of his labors since…oh, let me check (pause for a quick perusal of back issues of “Cemetery Dance”, never far away) the summer of 1991.

Gee whiz. THIRTY TWO YEARS! That sounds like an awfully long time. And it is, by any measure, but especially in the horror world, which has been through several major booms and busts in the interim. Why, the very bookstore that used to be my source for CD—Bookstar, in Nashville, TN—has been gone for a very long time. A shame, because I bought a lot of fine literature there, horror and otherwise. And with Christmas drawing nigh, I miss it a lot more. Fortunately, we do have a couple of fine indies within a reasonable drive, both of which I visited during the run up to the publication of Chizmar’s latest work, “Becoming The Boogeyman”. I was dropping off promotional material for said volume, stuff I was more than happy to distribute, having read the first installment of this series…

…yes, I did say series. Because that’s just what it has become. And gang, that’s a good thing. Because Richard Chizmar has done something special with these books: he has created a whole new genre, which, as far as I know, is populated by hisownself alone. That would be the Fictional True Crime Genre.

If you read “Chasing The Boogeyman”—and if you haven’t, what the hell are you waiting for? GO GET IT!—Chizmar is himself the central character in a remarkable tale of what reads much like any true crime book you’ve ever read, the story of an investigation of a serial killer, replete with pictures, transcripts of interviews, personal reminiscences, the lot. There’s even a history of Cemetery Dance magazine, which to any horror fan is worth the price of admission in itself. The neatest thing about Chasing though was how perfectly it drew you in, to the point where you actually believe that this is a true story, even when you know perfectly well that it is not. "Suspension of Disbelief" to an almost startling degree...an amazing feat, y’all.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! Sit yourself down and dig into the second go-round with Richard Chizmar and Joshua Gallagher, aka The Boogeyman. And to borrow a tagline from a particularly execrable film: "This Time, It’s Personal." See, now Our Hero Chiz is justly famous following the big to-do that results from the publication of the original book, and the resulting film. But it’s not all wine and roses of course; the neighbors in Edgewood, MD are not at all happy with the notoriety the book and film have brought their community, and they certainly don't approve of the increased traffic around the Chizmar home... which increases exponentially when someone leaves a ‘gift bag’ next to a fire hydrant outside of the house.

What’s in the bag? I hear you asking. Well, I’ll give you a hint that isn't exactly a spoiler: the bag is heavy, lumpy, and it reeks of death. Even JJ, the family dog, doesn’t want anything to do with it.

You get it now, right? What’s in the bag? Yep, it’s a dismembered body, and just like that, things get a WHOLE lot more complicated around the neighborhood and the general vicinity of Edgewood. Who was the victim? Who was the murderer? It couldn’t possibly be Josh Gallagher, could it? He’s safely locked away in Cumberland Penitentiary, right? Right?

    Right?

And therein lies the tale, with more twists and turns than North Carolina's “Tail of the Dragon”…the western US equivalent would be Lombard Street in San Francisco. We learn more of the background of the story, we see what it’s like to obtain sudden celebrity, and we see that nasty tipping point at which ‘famous’ becomes ‘infamous’. It will keep you guessing all the way to Page 405, which is the end...

...of this volume, anyway. Because as we all know, the Boogeyman can’t die. The Boogeyman can NEVER die. As long as he resides in someone’s imagination, he (or she, for the matter) will always walk among us. And by me, that’s a very good thing indeed.

This is superb work, folks. Superb. I’ve summarized it thus initially when I finished it back in October, but it’s still a fact: this is the best book I’ve read in 2023. And I’ve read 42 books this year, works by a lot of authors you probably know pretty intimately. I’ve spent so much time reading that I’ve had precious little time for my own writing. But never mind that…already I’m salivating over the next—final?—installment of this story, and if I wasn’t thoroughly convinced now that this is a work of fiction, I’d be pestering Chizmar for daily updates on the well-being of his family. But this IS fiction, and I'm pretty satisfied that Rich and Kara and family are just fine and not being stalked by anything or anyone…

…waitaminute, waitaminute, his website is down.

    Is he REALLY okay?

SOMEBODY CALL CHIZMAR AND MAKE SURE HE’S OKAY!

Chizmar hooked me! Becoming the Boogeyman- How much of it is fact or fiction? The murders were chilling, and the evil is too recognizable.

In this exceptional follow up sequel to Chasing the Boogeyman, Richard Chizmar invites us back into the story where we left off with Joshua Gallagher- the man who was imprisoned for a serial killing spree in the 1980s in Edgewood, Maryland, Chizmar's hometown. Chizmar continues to interview the monster who killed several teenage girls but soon, the killings that he thought were left in the past, start up again, leaving open the possibility that a copycat killer is once again on the loose in Edgewood. It isn't exactly as it may seem, and several people float the idea that it's none other than Chizmar who is behind the current murders. Chizmar works frantically to clear his name but the more effort he puts into it the more fingers point at him. Is Joshua Gallagher somehow orchestrating the serial killings from prison or is it really Richard Chizmar who is responsible- or is it someone or something else?

Chasing the Boogeyman was unique and very intriguing story telling where the author had us wondering if the tale was based on fact or fiction. For many of us, including me, I didn't know what to believe but the story was so compelling, with pictures to back up what was happening in the book, that I certainly wanted to believe it had actually happened. Chizmar hooked me. I had to pick up Becoming the Boogeyman- taking me down the same path again- wondering how much of it is fact or fiction. The murders were chilling, and the evil is too recognizable.

Chizmar's talent is right up there with the very best. The only thing that held this back from being a five-star review? He seems, at times, to move the story to unrelated topics, such as snippets of a book he is writing, which he includes, about growing up in Edgewood with some of his friends. I think this took away from some of the building excitement of the story, but it's just a minor criticism. Chizmar is in the top five of my favorite authors.

    I loved Becoming the Boogeyman!

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ + infinity

Becoming the Boogeyman is the unsettling and highly anticipated sequel to Chasing the Boogeyman, getting infinity starts from me.

Picking up a few years after DNA sends our murderer to prison for life and decades after the killings first began, the town is once again being terrorized with missing and murdered girls. Are these murders that of Joshua Gallagher (impossible!) or a copycat killer? The murders were first connected to Joshua Gallagher but then they start pointing to Richard Chizmar… what is really going on and who is responsible for these atrocities?

Richard Chizmar, please take a bow. Another extraordinary piece of work. Again, blurring the lines between fact and fiction leaving you with goosebumps in its wake. With this unique style of writing it had me questioning what is real and what is not. It has been a true delight to read. It’s creepy and engrossing in all the right ways. Constructed like the last, the photos and newspaper clippings make it all feel so real and unnerving, it’s quite remarkable. Reading these books at night really had me questioning every sound and shadow that I’m not even sure were actually there. I am excited about the ending and I hope this means we have a third book on the way! If you’re looking for a book that feels chillingly real and sheds light upon the true monsters that can be walking among us, this is the book right here. I am extremely fortunate that my first physical ARC is an absolute hit and one I’ll be keeping forever. Becoming the Boogeyman is out 10.10.23 but do yourself a favor and preorder it, it’s worth the hype. I already have my copy & signed bookplate preordered.

A huge thank you to the author himself Richard Chizmar and Gallery Books for the ARC and the chance to read and review it honestly.

    Happy Reading 📚

Becoming the Boogeyman is the sequel to Chasing the Boogeyman.

It is a fiction book written and designed as a true crime investigation into the Boogeyman serial killer.

The first novel was very enjoyable, I binge read it. This novel is even better, creepier and really sucks you in to a true crime feel.

I would highly recommend both books in the series, read in order of publication.

Straddling the fence between crime fiction and true crime, Becoming the Boogeyman delivers on both fronts, with the added bonus of photos. The narrative reads as if the author is relating a series of murders whilst being in the middle of promoting his own book that is actually the book you are reading. It is kind of weird but there’s no denying that it’s cleverly done. At times, self deprecating and, arguably, self promoting at others, this is a read that will take you out of your comfort zone and maybe even send a few shivers down your spine. But have no fear, it’s all made up. That’s right isn’t it? 😱
