“Khaw’s poetic prose and stylish approach to gore make it a blood-soaked, unforgettable gem.” The New York Times

From Cassandra Khaw,
USA Today bestselling author of Nothing But Blackened Teeth, comes The Salt Grows Heavy, a razor-sharp and bewitching fairy tale of discovering the darkness in the world, and the darkness within oneself.

A Best Horror Book of 2023 (The New York Times, Library Journal) A Best Book of 2023 (NPR) • A Bram Stoker Award Nominee! An Indie Next Pick

You may think you know how the fairy tale goes: a mermaid comes to shore and weds the prince. But what the fables forget is that mermaids have teeth. And now, her daughters have devoured the kingdom and burned it to ashes.

On the run, the mermaid is joined by a mysterious plague doctor with a darkness of their own. Deep in the eerie, snow-crusted forest, the pair stumble upon a village of ageless children who thirst for blood, and the three “saints” who control them.

The mermaid and her doctor must embrace the cruelest parts of their true nature if they hope to survive.

“This brilliant novella is not to be missed.”
Publishers Weekly, STARRED review

Epic mermaid horror
The Salt Grows Heavy is an epic horror mermaid tale. There is so much I loved about this so it’s kind of hard to sum it up. I loved the fairy tale aspect of it. It’s about a mermaid on the run with a mysterious plague doctor after her daughters have devoured their kingdom and burned it down. These mermaids have TEETH! The descriptions are so in depth and so detail oriented that you feel like you’re actually there. It’s very violent and dark and gruesome and just AWESOME. I loved that the plague doctor is sexless and you don’t really know if it’s male or female, because it doesn’t matter. The bond between the mermaid and the plague doctor was beautiful. It was very poetic at times and I found myself having to pause and take in the words Khaw was using. The vocabulary was stunning. For being a novella this really packed a huge punch. Definitely worth reading!

The book came in great shape and fast

I like this book much more than the previous, the descriptions of each action have become much more simplified and don’t take you out of the moment. My biggest complaint is referring to the plague doctor as they in conversation with the 3 priests. i had to double take a few times to make sure i was reading correctly because both characters had similar descriptions and when they interacted it was slightly confusing but nothing too bad.

I was wary going in based on some of the reviews, but I ended up loving everything about this book. The focus, the jewel of the story, is the relationship between the mermaid and the doctor. It’s sweet and tragic, and so well-paced. The ‘Salt Grows Heavy’ was not at all what I expected from the description, and while it definitely has no lack of body horror, gore, and violence, the graphic parts are part of the story and allow the reader a better view of the characters. I also enjoyed the incorporation of the fairy tales and mythologies, and how they all interconnected within the world of the book.
The authors writing style could be described as very literary, maybe fancy or flowery; I am fluent in English but had to look up the definitions of some of the words (thankfully the kindle app makes it quick and easy). I love it - it fits brilliantly with the atmosphere and enhances the overall experience. I would likely never tire of this kind of narrative, but do realize it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, so beware of medical, dated, and formal terminology.

This story was disgustingly beautiful. The writing was so gory that I actually had to set it down. This does horror so well in such a short amount of pages. Topics of grief, motherhood, religion, cults and more fill the pages and leave a lot to dissect in terms of relevant themes. It also has a touch of romance that blossoms in the darkest of times.
That being said, it’s not a perfect story. At some points the writing can be convoluted. There’s a lot of words without there being a lot going on and this can make the plot hard to follow. I had to read paragraphs multiple times to ground myself in what was happening in certain scenes.
Overall, I did enjoy this novella for what it was!

I normally am not a huge fan of gore horror, but this story captivated me the whole way through. The author invests emotion in the main characters of the plague doctor and the mermaid, and I could almost feel every cut, every incision that was made in the course of this story. Its visceral, its emotional. I would love to see this made into a short film for Shudder or another platform. I would read it again!

A surreal Lynchian fairy tale us as brutally viceral as it is poetic in its prose. The salt of the tears extracted by the alchemy of her story is indeed heavy.

A clutch of weird with an undercurrent of love and threaded with trauma and compassion.

Khaws works caught me by surprise and now I am eager to for everything she's written.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Salt Grows Heavy is another excellent horror fairy-tale from Cassandra Khaw.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 12, 2023
The short story that is at the end of this novel was one of my favourites from Cassandra's short story collection 'Breakable Things,' so I was very excited to see a continuation was coming out.

Cassandra has a way with Prose that is unlike other authors. They layer all of their writing with gory detail, and really make you feel the violence that the characters go through.

The main character was sympathetic, and it's always enjoyable to read someone done wrong fight back. I also enjoyed the plague doctor and their story of overcoming their past.

I had some 'Lord of the Flies' vibes in parts which I enjoyed. The world building was excellent, and I wonder if any of them will appear in later stories. I'd love to see more of this world, and perhaps more of the mermaids adventures. However I'm very happy with the ending.

As an aside, I just want to say how much I love reading Cassandra Khaw's work. I always know I'm going to enjoy their work, and they're one of my comfort writers. Their prose, characters and world building are incredible.

3.0 out of 5 stars A deeply dark story that may be a challenge for some readers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 16, 2023
I both loved and hated this book. The story itself was compelling, but the story telling overly complicated and hard-going. Cassandra Khaw has a mastery of the English language that is beyond pretty much anything I have read before, which is both a blessing and a curse. The reader may need a dictionary to hand when reading this book, which can be disruptive to the flow of the read.

A mermaid trapped on land by her Prince husband gives birth to her starving offspring who devour both the Prince and the population of his land. The mermaid runs away with the Plague Doctor, with whom she has become friends. They discover a village of children who are led by three saints who have discovered how to revive the dead and now use this as a ritual rite of passage for the children. What transpires is both gruesome and captivating, one you understand what is happening!

I'm glad I read this book, but it will not be one I will read again. I may recommend it to a select few people who enjoy a challenging read.

Just a quick review:
Khaw gives us the sequel to the Little Mermaid that we probably didn't even know we wanted all along.
No talking fish and singing lobsters here: instead we have blood, teeth, magical eugenics, and a mysterious Plague Doctor.
The language can come very close to being overly flowery, overly sumptuous at times, but the imagery is as beautiful as it is visceral.
This is brilliant, and very much lives up to the hype.
