“Khaw’s poetic prose and stylish approach to gore make it a blood-soaked, unforgettable gem.” ―The New York Times
From Cassandra Khaw, USA Today bestselling author of Nothing But Blackened Teeth, comes The Salt Grows Heavy, a razor-sharp and bewitching fairy tale of discovering the darkness in the world, and the darkness within oneself.
A Best Horror Book of 2023 (The New York Times, Library Journal) • A Best Book of 2023 (NPR) • A Bram Stoker Award Nominee! • An Indie Next Pick
You may think you know how the fairy tale goes: a mermaid comes to shore and weds the prince. But what the fables forget is that mermaids have teeth. And now, her daughters have devoured the kingdom and burned it to ashes.
On the run, the mermaid is joined by a mysterious plague doctor with a darkness of their own. Deep in the eerie, snow-crusted forest, the pair stumble upon a village of ageless children who thirst for blood, and the three “saints” who control them.
The mermaid and her doctor must embrace the cruelest parts of their true nature if they hope to survive.
“This brilliant novella is not to be missed.” ―Publishers Weekly, STARRED review
“With this brilliantly constructed tale...Khaw cements their status as a must-read author.” ―Library Journal, STARRED review

“Cassandra Khaw’s writing is never more lyrical than when they’re describing the knife in your heart. The bones of a fairy tale sunk deep in a charnel house of descriptive prose, an elegant confection with a blood-soaked core. I devoured it in one sitting.” ―T. Kingfisher, multi-award winning author of What Moves the Dead and Nettle & Bone
“[B]eautiful in its darkness; much like the mermaids of lore ― before they were transformed into manatee-sweet, soft-haired sirens ― it has teeth. Readers in the mood to savor a silver-tongued little nightmare will sink happily into its depths.” ―NPR

“What with poisonous relationships, parasite houses, and ghost brides, Nothing But Blackened Teeth is a really bad idea for a wedding, and a really great idea for a nightmare-on-the-page. This book is so magnificently rotten it writhes with literary maggots, and deserves a place of honor among its peers in horror.” ―C. S. E. Cooney, World Fantasy Award-winning author of Bone Swans: Stories

The authors writing style could be described as very literary, maybe fancy or flowery; I am fluent in English but had to look up the definitions of some of the words (thankfully the kindle app makes it quick and easy). I love it - it fits brilliantly with the atmosphere and enhances the overall experience. I would likely never tire of this kind of narrative, but do realize it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, so beware of medical, dated, and formal terminology.
That being said, it’s not a perfect story. At some points the writing can be convoluted. There’s a lot of words without there being a lot going on and this can make the plot hard to follow. I had to read paragraphs multiple times to ground myself in what was happening in certain scenes.
Overall, I did enjoy this novella for what it was!
A clutch of weird with an undercurrent of love and threaded with trauma and compassion.
Khaws works caught me by surprise and now I am eager to for everything she's written.
Please move on.

Cassandra has a way with Prose that is unlike other authors. They layer all of their writing with gory detail, and really make you feel the violence that the characters go through.
The main character was sympathetic, and it's always enjoyable to read someone done wrong fight back. I also enjoyed the plague doctor and their story of overcoming their past.
I had some 'Lord of the Flies' vibes in parts which I enjoyed. The world building was excellent, and I wonder if any of them will appear in later stories. I'd love to see more of this world, and perhaps more of the mermaids adventures. However I'm very happy with the ending.
As an aside, I just want to say how much I love reading Cassandra Khaw's work. I always know I'm going to enjoy their work, and they're one of my comfort writers. Their prose, characters and world building are incredible.
A mermaid trapped on land by her Prince husband gives birth to her starving offspring who devour both the Prince and the population of his land. The mermaid runs away with the Plague Doctor, with whom she has become friends. They discover a village of children who are led by three saints who have discovered how to revive the dead and now use this as a ritual rite of passage for the children. What transpires is both gruesome and captivating, one you understand what is happening!
I'm glad I read this book, but it will not be one I will read again. I may recommend it to a select few people who enjoy a challenging read.
Khaw gives us the sequel to the Little Mermaid that we probably didn't even know we wanted all along.
No talking fish and singing lobsters here: instead we have blood, teeth, magical eugenics, and a mysterious Plague Doctor.
The language can come very close to being overly flowery, overly sumptuous at times, but the imagery is as beautiful as it is visceral.
This is brilliant, and very much lives up to the hype.
