Sennheiser HD 660S

Sennheiser HD 660S

The powerhouse open-back headphone.

Connects you to the deepest corners of your music collection.

Sennheiser HD 660S

A direct connection to your music

Known for their engaging signatures and liquid-smooth response, HD 660S predecessors HD 650 and HD 600 shattered performance barriers in the audiophile headphone category.

The HD 660S transcends the best of that storied DNA with supernatural speed and effortless instrument reproduction—even at the bookends of the frequency spectrum. Utilizing an all-new transducer and specially ventilated drive unit, the HD 660S delivers the revealing, tack-sharp detail audiophiles demand without sacrificing the engaging dynamics that make music so enjoyable.

Sennheiser HD 660S

From our ears to yours

In just one listen you will understand why the HD 660S is so special. Thousands of listening sessions later its purpose is even clearer.

What you hear each and every time is the result of an open-back earcup mated to a new transducer tuned for the modern audiophile. Its speedy response is perfectly suited for reproducing those frequency-stretching recordings with confidence. Thanks to an aluminum voice coil, the 38mm diaphragm remains nimble for ultra-quick impulse fidelity across the board. This activation and rest behaviour unlocks the capability to communicate tonal and spatial characteristics precisely.

Sennheiser HD 660S

Meshing together

The steel mesh found on the HD 660S drive unit is interesting in design but most impressive when it comes to performance.

It completes the ventilated driver, offering consistent control of air displacement to reduce turbulence. As a result, diaphragm travel is pure, letting the music—and only the music—shine in a perfect balance of integrity and expression. The steel composition allows for much tighter production tolerances, ultimately contributing to remarkably consistent characteristics of each HD 660S produced. When combined with the open-back earcups, the sound emanating from each transducer is completely free to expand, just as it would in nature.

Sennheiser HD 660S

Capability, meet versatility

Today’s audiophile has more component choices than ever.

We optimized the HD 660S for efficiency on a wider range of devices to accommodate the varying levels of power present in output amplification circuitry. At 150 ohms, the HD 660S is the perfect partner for dedicated amplifiers, A/V receivers, and digital audio players (DAPs)—the magnet is more powerful than its predecessors, and thus easier to drive regardless of how your setup changes over time.

We also packed your HD 660S with a versatile set of essential cables, each one impedance-matched with ultra-low capacitance.

    Gotta love the Sennheiser!!!

    Gotta love the Sennheiser!!!
Let me start off by stating that I own the Sennheiser 600's too. And this headphone isn't that. The 600 is a very Audiophile quality headphone. This version is more a 50% Audiophile 50% enjoyment headphone! An Audiophile headphone is flat and VERY detailed! 3D, pretty much as close as possible to actually being there in the studio. At least that's what an Audiophile looks for. The 660S isn't flat. Pretty detailed but the bass is bumped up a notch or two. This headphone is more enjoyable for the "Normal" person. Like I said, it's very detailed. You will hear sounds from your previous favorite tracks that you've never heard on other cheaper headphone/Earbuds. Ticks, taps clicks, clings and so on, lol! Pretty much your music is now High Quality! And you will be able to tell with these! The 660S are open back. Meaning you can easily hear other sounds around you. Someone speaking to you or a television in the background. It'll ruin your music experience. You need to be in a quiet room or away from others. If you mind? They aren't closed such as a traditional headphone that we've all pretty much are accustomed to. The open back assist with the awesome sound! Giving it a more open airy sound. Not a HUGE sound stage so don't get me wrong. Not like an 800 Sennheiser! Lol The 660S headphones that go over/around your ear are very comfortable! I have a big head and they feel light and comfy! The clamp around the ears isn't bad for me. I can move my head aggressively and they don't slide off. But they aren't clamped on with a lot of pressure either. They're perfect! The cord that it comes with is pretty long! Not many are fans of. If you wanna just connect to your phone and move around your house jamming out? These aren't for ya, lol At least the cord that it comes with isn't. This headphone follows after the 600's. Which are meant to be experienced at home. Connected to a high def device. In which you are given plenty of cord so you can sit down with comfort! Unlike other headphones where you move around and you end up yanking the headphone accidently or however. These are not mobile Headphones. But these do not require Hi-Def. Devices! That's the cool thing about these compared to the 600's. The 600's require a lot of power and clean power and a VERY good Dac for ultimate Nirvana sound! Pretty much you need to put in a lot of money towards your investment with the 600's! These 660S's you don't. An Audiophile on a budget can easily enjoy these! A simple headphone connection and you can enjoy these without wondering what else can you attach to obtain it's optimum sound! Of coarse, it is 50% Audiophile grade so use the highest quality connections you can with these! The better and cleaner the better the 660S will perform! But don't stress! They are 50% relax and enjoy type of headphone! And in my opinion, they are AWESOME! 😉👍👍👍 Plus with some extras, true Audiophile grade headphones provide! If you're looking for a Pro, flat Audiophile sound? These will not satisfy. The 600's will. If you're someone who enjoys good quality music but don't want that really flat tuning. And don't or cant really obtain expensive devices to enjoy them? These are for you. They are awesome! I haven't used the Balanced cord on them. So I can't write my opinion on that. Sennheiser, keep it up, you guys are AWESOME! For those that haven't tried out a Sennheiser headphone yet? Do it. Give them a try! Sennheiser doesn't flake out on premium sound! They are ALL about it! Plus, with Amazon you can always return them if you aren't a fan of them for any reason! 30 days I believe? Enjoy! I know I am! (As we speak!)

Let me start this off correctly. These are the best and closest to perfect headphones you will be able to find overall. The 660 S is pure magic for your ears. It’s worth the price. 💯

We can’t really talk about the 660 S without talking about the 650. I had the HD 650 back from 2013 to 2016 until I finally sold them. The HD 650 are top notch headphones, but I switched over to the X2s at the time. I don’t regret the choice. The HD 650s need a lot of power and the X2s at the time had very little competition in the $300 segment. They had more soundstage and bass. The HD 650s, which the HD 660 S is attempting to dethrone here, is an absolute monster of a headphone. The 650s offer a fatigueless experience and have basically no major flaws. True for it's time. Then I got the 660 S!

The 660 S is the better headphone. It’s easier to drive first of all. Many of you may not even know what Ohms and sensitivity are. Let's say the 660 S is in many cases 30-40% louder on the same equipment. The 660 S can do everything the 650 and 600 do much better. Don’t let anyone trick you on this. It’s better – in every way. Through some sort of magical engineering, the 660 S takes the 650s top end veil off, without bringing up the highs. In fact, the highs are even further recessed on the 660 S. Don’t let this pull you back. All the details are there. Unless you’re a huge fan of V shaped headphones, you won’t find something better under $500 than this. That’s just how it is. You have to accept it. This is S tier all over the place. Let’s talk further about sound. I’m going to be brief.

The 660 S are the smoothest headphones I’ve ever heard. Highs, bass, and mids are absolutely and completely balanced. Bass is punchy, accurate, and present. Mids are, of course, the highlight of the 600 series and here you are getting the best mids nearly of any headphone unless you step up humongous amounts of $. The soundstage is fantastic. It’s not too wide or too narrow. It’s just right. Where these really shine is the treble for me. These present fatigueless, milky smooth, crystal clear, purely magical, ear soothing, and perfectly accurate highs. These are a 9.5/10 headphone and S tier. You can’t beat these even if you pay $500. If you can get them for less than $500 then you are getting the best deal of your life in headphones.

They are significantly better than the 650. We aren’t talking a little here. There’s a huge jump of at least 30% in clarity and imaging. Huge. I bought these and the Fiio K5 Pro. I’ve never heard sound so good in my life and I used the Creative Z with the HD 650s for years. As soon as I put these on and listened even for a little bit, I was floored by what I was getting. I said the highs were the best part right? The IMAGING!! What the heck? Let me tell you I listen to music from video game OSTs more than really anything. Wow. Incredible. This will show you details in something as old as SNES music that you never even knew existed. The imaging on these has to be some of the best in the entire world. Sounds pop up all around you and it doesn’t just sound like two speakers hitting your ears. Phenomenal imaging. They sound so clear. If you’re on the fence like I was, just get these. Do it! They’re glorious. They’re glorious with any DAC assuming they have enough power. Yes, my K5 Pro sounds way better than my other DACs, but stepping down into a lower DAC is not a disappointment at all. They’re still top tier and the best.

Yea, I don’t care about all the Sundara & DT 1990 hype. Those two don’t image like these do. If you absolutely must have the bass, then these may disappoint, but if you aren’t a bass head, then these are a no-brainer. I’ll also help you here. If you really can’t justify the pricetag of these, then get the Philips SHP 9500 with the K5 Pro or E10K-TC. This combo will probably be a little cheaper, but it will sound pretty good & similar. The 9500 with the K5 Pro is quite exceptional. You won’t have the milky smooth highs though. But, if you *only* are in need of headphones, then get the 660 S. Do whatever you have to do to get your hands on them.

Here's another tidbit. You can repair the HD 660 S easily with spare HD 650, 600, or 660 S parts. Everything can basically be tool-lessly repaired in the 600 line. It’s extremely supported with cables galore everywhere. The issue with the Sundaras and the 1990s is that they’re not going to have the level of support that the 660 S has. There’s a reason that the 600 series have been going strong since 1997.

The 660 S is the gold standard now and every headphone should be attempting to live up to their magic. Yes, they’re legendary. Yes, the legend continues.

First, let me start out by saying I'm a professional audio engineer with a focus on Jazz, Classical, Pop, and Americana genres. I own/use the following headphones currently: AKG K701, Audeze Sine, Audio Technica ATH-M50x, Beyerdynamic DT 1350-80, Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro (250 Ohm), SONY MDR-V6, and a few more lower-end consumer grade headphones.

Second, let me share something important in the HD 660S owner manual that some might miss:
"These open dynamic headphones have been designed for home use with high-quality audio systems". Such system components display the "Hi-Res Audio Certificate" on their packaging and are thus meant to reproduce high quality audio recordings made to the "Hi-Res" standard.

Numerous blind studies confirm trained listeners agree that what makes a headphone sound "good" is neutral, natural, balanced sound that replicates the audio quality of good speakers playing well recorded music in a good home acoustic environment. The HD 660S has been so designed; but if you want to hear how great the HD 660S sounds, you need to play music that already sounds great.

So for those having no particular interest in superior high fidelity audio reproduction, then money spent on the HD 660S will be wasted. The HD 660S while somewhat forgiving, will make very obvious every flaw in music that has not been well recorded; and the lower quality of lossy audio formats such as MP3 will not allow the HD 660S to shine. The Audio Technica ATH-M50x, the SONY MDR-V6 or MDR-7506, or other cans of comparable quality, will get you a much better bang for your buck.

For the rest, in my estimation, the HD 660S design goal has been well achieved, such that my HD 660S reproduces closely the dynamics, fidelity, sound stage and imaging of my studio reference speaker system. The HD 660S is a very musical headphone and worth considering for its intended purpose: enjoying Hi-Res music to the point one can get completely immersed in the experience.

I would not use the HD 660S for tracking, mixing, or mastering. However, it *is* my go-to headphone for enjoying the results while relaxing in my easy chair at home. One more comment in that regard: Some reviewers are disappointed with the "width of the sound stage", accustomed as they are to the exaggerated sound stage width of most open-ended headphones. The HD 660S replicates the sound stage of my stereo masters *as they sound over my studio reference speaker system*.

Sennheiser has in fact achieved with the HD 660S *not* the unnaturally wide stereo spread of most open headphones, but instead the "neutral, natural, balanced sound of good speakers in a good room". That, IMO, is a great accomplishment, and one of the main reasons I'm a big fan of the HD 660S.

Writing this review in the Fall of 2022, I've not experienced any of the very few negatives some have mentioned in prior reviews of the HD 660S, and would purchase this headphone again in a New York minute.

BTW, ignore the audiofools: there's no such thing as headphone "burn-in". Enjoy these right out of the box by giving your psycho-acoustic system (i.e. your ear/brain interaction) the opportunity to adjust as soon as possible to the audio signature of these very fine headphones.

When you're looking for top of the line sound from open-back headphones, these are it. They're everything I hoped for. The sound is incredible and well-balanced, with just the right amount of warmth. Music, podcasts, or even gaming, these headphones deliver clarity.

The build quality is solid and lightweight, which makes them comfortable to wear for hours. These are definitely best used in a quiet environment due to their open-back design. If you're looking for a wide soundstage, I wouldn't recommend these, but they deliver a sound above most closed back headphones.

If you’re serious about audio and ready to invest in a premium experience, the HD660S is worth every penny. I would recommend them to anyone looking to take their listening several notches higher.

If you are looking for noise cancellation then this is not the headphone you'll want to buy However if sound is your preference then this is the right product
I started with Bose QC 35 then Audio Technica and now finally the Sennheiser HD660S. With just 150 Ohms it can be easily driven by a smart phone however I'll recommend a DAC for optimum output. My suggestion Fiio BTR5 as this also has a 2.5mm balanced output. The HD 660s also come with a pentaconn cable.

I'll end by saying this is the best headphone for home listening and for travelling I'll suggest Audio technica ATHMx50
On sound Quality of the HD 660s good low's the BASS is decent not too overpowering and the Mid 's being excellent in its class, the vocals are awesome, on the high's it's good.

The sound-stage is wide with fantastic imaging.

The only CON that I see is the length of the cables it comes with are very long. Would have been better if there was a 3-4 ft cable as well.

Where do I start. First of all let’s mention that I’ve tried a lot of headphone in my life with many different style and brand, I’ve tried the Beyerdynamic dt770 pro, Sony wh1000xm4, Focal elegia, bose hp 700 and much more. All of these headphone are good pair of headphone but they where all made for different need. I do agree that the HD 660s is the best headphone that I’ve ever tried in my life.

Fist let’s talk about Comfort, the HD 660s is very confortable but you won’t forget him, the clamping force is pretty high and will squeeze you head if you have a big head but after a few days it will get better, except this, these are very confortable headphone.

Seconde things that i want to point out is the noice canceling, truly awesome, just kidding this is an open back design that men you can hear the outside and the outside can hear you. So keep in mind that for a good experience you will need to be in a calm room.

Last but not least, I will say of course the most important thing in a pair of headphone is the sound quality. First if you like beats headphone or headphone with muddy and heavy bass save your money. The bass on this headphone is really good but you won’t feel it in your head, the bass is just sooooooo well defined and clear, I agree it’s lacking a bit in the sub bass area but that is just depending on what music you are lessening. I do want to mention that even if these headphone are only a 150 ohm with a sensitivity do a 104 dB don’t try it with your phone it will sound like a cheap pair of headphone. I don’t have a dedicated amps but they work pretty well with my gaming laptop who support Hi-Res audio but I agree that is not the best experience you can get out of this pair of headphone I will buy and amps soon to make sure I will have best experience possible. Anyway let’s continue in the sound quality by talking about the mids, damn they are good they just sound natural you feel like the person is talking right beside you, this is where these headphone shine the mids a just so well reproduced. Finally the treble, there is not much to say I’d you look at the frequency response graph they are not particularly present but are not sibilant at all they are very good, a good definition just what you like.

I highly recommend this pair of headphone you can go wrong with this especially if they are in sale

The product is working fine no complains as such.
However, the package was a bit old, it looked like it was returned and was opened. While it stated that it’s brand new.
Otherwise I would give 5 starts
