I bought this backpack for work wanting to downsize from a 35 liter pack that I had been using for over a year. I ordered this pack for the looks/size and have been somewhat pleased in the 5+ months I’ve used it daily.Pros - looks good and I get lots of compliments. It keeps its shape and has some nice features for being small smaller pack. It rides well on my travel suitcase and the storage organization in the main compartment is good.Cons - having a second zipper on the laptop compartment was completely overlooked when this thing was designed. Honestly, this is the only thing keeping it from 5 stars but having the 1 zipper can sometimes lead to an awkwardness of opening it up or closing it when the pack is nearly full. The color also seems to be fading over time and it’s not as “blue” as it was when it was brand new.All in all if you’re looking for a professional looking backpack and willing to spend $200+ this is a good option for a daily commute.

    I’ve been using the Apex Backpack, and it’s fantastic. The design is understated and professional while also very functional, so it's been great for my work and travel. My MacBook Pro slides easily into the padded laptop compartment, and there’s still plenty of room for pretty much everything else I need on a short trip.

    The waterproof fabric feels durable, and I like that it's made from recycled materials. The shoulder straps and breathable back panel make it comfortable to wear even after a long day. I’m 5’ 3” and it fits me well. It’s both stylish (I have the Airforce blue color - nice to have a non-black bag!) and practical and I recommend it.

    I own a decent number of bags, including many a backpack for various use cases, including a decent amount of overlap. I have both a Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45L and an Osprey Farpoint 40 for 1 pack traveling (but also my Briggs & Riley rollers for when I don't want to carry a load). I have multiple hiking daypacks, mostly from Osprey. I have "technical" backpacks and slings and totes and probably too many messenger bags.

    Currently my two "EDC" (Everyday Carry) backpacks of choice were a Peak Design Everyday V2 at 30L, and a slimmer, no-name, cheap laptop bag that, frankly, got the job done. The Peak Design was a bit too big through as a true EDC, though great for traveling, so I wanted a slimmer EDC, because the cheap one was starting to fray, and the definitely not YKK zippers were starting to get stuck. After watching many a Youtube video (Chase Reeves, Packhacker) and reading various reviews on Wirecutter and elsewhere, I somehow stumbled on this Troubadour Apex, a brand I'd never even heard of. I did more research on it, thought it fit my needs very well, and finally pulled the plus when Amazon got it back in stock.

    I'd considered going with the compact version, but I wanted something that could fit my 17" LG Gram, which, admittedly is about the smallest 17" laptop you're going to get, but also an additional 16" portable monitor. The Apex accommodates both easily in the laptop compartment, with a bit of room to spare. That laptop compartment also floats off of the ground by a bit, a key feature for laptop safety from the odd drop. I then also tried to cram in my work laptop, a 15" (ish) Dell Latitude, in the same compartment, but out of the floating pocket, so encased in its own padded sleeve, and all three fit!

    The rest of the backpack is decently roomy for a couple of medium sized packing cubes and/or a tech pouch/dopp kit. I'd imagine you could easily fit enough for a weekend without a sweat, though I would probably favor the Peak Design on a multi-week trip. There's enough organizational nooks and crannies to pack away various cables, pens, etc., though I rely more on a tech pouch for my organization. There's an odd hidden sleeve that I'm guessing is for stowing passports or boarding passes, but I'd rather put those things on a sling or dedicated pouch.

    The Apex does have a very convenient luggage pass through sleeve to stack on top of a suitcase roller, and it keeps the backpack upright, unlike say on the Peak Design that puts the backpack on its side. Honestly, this is a bit of a key feature that eliminated other well rated backpacks, like Bellroy's various backpacks, because they lacked the pass through. But when on my shoulders, it's very comfortable, though I'll have to get back to how comfortable after walking a few miles across town, or running to catch a plane a few times.

    Finally, the bag is just cool looking. The overall aesthetics are stylish, with bits of vegan leather accents, including the zipper holds that I'd be comfortable bringing into any work meeting space. Having said that, this brings me to the one minus to the bag (so far), which is the water bottle holders, which are pretty small. They're good for a slim bottle, but my 20 oz Contago coffee mug doesn't feel very secure in there, and I'd rather give up a bit of that slim aesthetic (again, looks great on your back) for a deeper, secure fit for the bigger water bottles.

    I’ve had this backpack for a few months now. I love how sleek it is and how many compartments it has. My issues are the luggage pass through is way too tight and the paint on the zipper pulls is already chipping. This combined with the price just doesn’t make the backpack worth it to me. Disappointed because this was a Wirecutter pick and it just falls short.

    I got both the Apex 3.0 and the Pioneer 3.0 to compare in person. I ended up going with the Pioneer, which I've give 4.5 stars, compared with the 4.0 starts for the Apex.

    What I was looking for: I wanted to consolidate two bags; my work briefcase and my gym bag. The Apex could not accomplish that, the Pioneer could. However, I wish there was a way to merge features from both into one bag.

    The Apex:
    Likes:
    - Lots of Colourways (Obsidian Green is beautiful, refined, sophisticated, but still unique and fun)
    - High quality details and materials: Zipper pulls; ruberized waterproof zippers, leather accents, stitching, etc. all top quality. The most refined backpack at this pricepoint available
    - Dedicated laptop/tech compartment. I cannot stress enough how nice of a feature this is. Laptop/tablets have their own well-padded compartment.
    - Straps are comfortable, addjustable (with a high-quality fabric pullstrap)
    - Horizontal front pocket. (better, when compared to the vertical slash pocket on the P3.0)

    Dislikes:
    - No dedicated shoe compartment (such the Pioneer 3.0)
    - Size: even though it is technically larger in capactiy than the P3.0, I found it to be more difficult to fit the same amount of stuff in. I think the separate shoe pocket in the Pioneer made it easier to access and organize stuff
    - When the bag is full, the water bottle pockets at the side are a little insecure; I found my waterbottle didn't fit in snugly and was hard to slip in and out.

    Utlimately, as I said, this one is going back and I'm sticking with the P3.0 because it was easier to dig stuff out and fit more stuff in: Gym shoes, shorts, shirt, toilety bag, gym towel, plus all my work stuff - 17" laptop, folders, stationery organizers, notebook, etc.

    I was looking backpack suitable for business meetings. This backpack is ok.

    Pros:
    - nice looking
    - high-quality materials
    - smart compartments

    Cons:
    - chest strap and rain cover to be buy separately but they aren’t available on Amazon.

    I have shopped around for an exceptional backpack for years. I found this one from Troubadour through Wirecutter and it's amazing. I love the aesthetic, functionality, and lots of pockets so I know where everything is. For daily use it's been great for my MacBook Pro, AirPods Max, charger, water bottle etc. I have used to for some long distance travel too and it attaches securely to my suitcase, comfortably fits in a few extra items and a change of clothes. Love it and bought another one to gift!

    Delighted with my bag- main criteria was sustainability (this is from a. Corp company, and bag made of recycled materials) but also wanted a stylish clean look and practical features. And it delivers on all fronts! Fits all my stuff and has lots of little compartments so easy to find and don’t have to rummage round. Very comfy to wear. Good little features like phone pocket in the strap.

    I just purchased this in green, and am loving it. Super convenient bag, with lots of helpful compartments to organise my things.
    Love the fact that it’s waterproof.
    One thing I didn’t notice at first that I find particularly helpful is the zip-up pocket on the shoulder strap, which I use to keep my phone and keys. Would 100% recommend the bag as it’s a perfect size for work and also for travel. Some people might recommend the larger size, but I find the compact is definitely big enough.
