Update of a classic speaker, engineered by ear

Update of a classic speaker, engineered by ear

Mission 770 Stand-mount Speaker

Mission's 770 (shown in Walnut) has iconic '70s style and warm, natural, British hi-fi sound.

The British hi-fi speaker company Mission made its reputation with the original 770 speakers, which debuted in 1978. Designer Farad Azima based his crossover less on what he saw on frequency response charts and more on his own ears.

The new 770 stays true to the spirit of the iconic original. Mission's team, led by Peter Comeau, carefully updated the cabinet, drivers, and crossover. They also spent hundreds of hours listening to it in order to perfect its design.

Mission's objective for this speaker is to deliver classic British sound — rich, detailed, and natural — that lets you forget about the speaker and hear everything the music has to offer.

Drivers and crossover designed for synergy

The new 770 uses an 8" polypropylene woofer like its predecessor, but with a mineral-loaded composition that adds rigidity to the cone for fast, accurate sound. And like the original, the driver is mounted in a die-cast chassis with plenty of open space in the basket to help reduce sound reflection.

An oversized 1-1/8" microfiber polyester soft-dome tweeter delivers smooth, non-fatiguing high frequencies. And Mission went through over 170 iterations as they refined the crossover to blend the frequency slopes between the woofer and tweeter in the most musical way.

Non-resonant cabinet with superior damping

The 770's real-wood-veneered cabinet has relatively thin walls like its predecessor's, but improved with sandwiched MDF/particle board that's bonded together with high-damping adhesive. It also has internal bracing that helps keep the front baffle rigid as the drivers move with the music.

Acoustic foam and fiber damping material inside the enclosure absorb internal reflections, keeping cabinet coloration to an absolute minimum. And the flared front port helps the woofer deliver smooth, balanced, articulate bass.

Matching hand-made stands

The included custom-designed Mission 770 stands elevate these speakers to the proper listening height and give them a solid, vibration-resistant foundation for optimum performance. The stands are handmade in England from British steel.

Designed, engineered, and built in England

Mission is proud (and we think it's cool) that the 770s are made in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, England. "Music leads, technology follows," is their motto.

Features

Mission 770 Loudspeaker: The Mission 770 has always been manufactured according to the Mission principles of quality and value for money. The Mission 770 balances fine craftsmanship, natural sound quality, and affordability inside a beautifully stand-mount loudspeaker. The emphasis for the design of the new Mission 770 is its 2-way driver design with a 1.125" woven textile soft-dome tweeter and 8" mineral-loaded polypropylene cone that are housed in a resonance controlled real-wood veneer cabinet. As a result, the Mission 770 delivers a warm, rich and natural sounding character with an open, detailed soundstage.

1.125" Soft-Dome Tweeter: The Mission 770 features a 1.125" woven textile soft-dome tweeter with a high flux ferrite magnet that has been engineered for smooth, detailed high-frequency extension. This new tweeter uses a lightweight, damped microfiber dome with an ultra-smooth response, backed by a damped rear chamber that pushes the fundamental resonance well below the crossover region. The acoustics of this 1.25" soft-dome tweeter marries perfectly with the Mission 770's mid/bass driver to ensure evenness of character throughout the range of the whole speaker.

8" Polypropylene Mid/Bass Driver: A new 8" mineral-loaded polypropylene mid/bass driver with an upgraded motor system was developed for the Mission 770 to handle lots of power, wide dynamic ranges, and extended low frequencies with little to no coloration. This new polypropylene cone has been treated with mineral filling to make it stiffer for tight, accurate, and fast bass response. The mineral-loaded polypropylene driver is built onto an 8" die-cast chassis with larger rear venting to reduce early reflections back through the cone. Special care was also taken to marry a low-density nitrile surround to the cone to match its impedance and reduce refections from the cone edge.

High Quality Crossover: A high quality crossover network allows the Mission 770 loudspeaker to perfectly balance between the mid/bass driver and tweeter for a seamless transition between bass, midrange, and treble frequencies - resulting in extreme accuracy with a smooth and natural sound. This highly researched crossover was mapped out onto separate bass and treble PCBs using very short signal paths and accommodating high-quality components such as super-transparent polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors, which maintain the speaker's open and transparent sound.

Real-Wood Veneer Cabinet: The drivers and crossover are housed in a real-wood veneered cabinet (black or walnut) with a white laminated front baffle. The speaker cabinet uses a twin-wall sandwich of high-density MDF and particle board bonded together with a high-damping adhesive, resulting in a panel resonance well below the audible range of the human ear for a natural sound that is unaltered and uncolored. The speaker cabinet's internal bracing adds strength to the front baffle and braces the drivers to the enclosure, creating a mechanical support that aids in the dynamic performance of the bass driver and reveals the microdynamics of your music soundtracks. This is complemented by a layer of acoustic foam and damping fiber, strategically placed to absorb reflections inside the cabinet without overdamping the bass quality.

Bass Reflex (Ported) Design: The Mission 770's speaker cabinet employs a bass reflex design with a front-firing port. The cabinet and reflex port have been finely tuned to deliver tight and accurate bass performance without the "one-note boominess" that is typical in other bass-reflex systems. In addition, the port is strongly flared at both the inlet and outlet to smooth airflow and eliminate distortion.

Binding Post Terminals: The Mission 770 loudspeaker is outfitted with a set of binding post terminals that will support bare wire (up to 12AWG), pin-connectors, spade lugs, and banana plugs (single only). The Mission 770 has a nominal impedance of 8 ohm.

Mission 770 Stand: Every aspect of the Mission 770 stand has been considered to create the perfect presentation, both visually and acousticaly, of the Mission 770 stand-mount loudspeaker. The Mission 770 stand was custom designed in conjunction with Mission's Director of Acoustic Design, Peter Comeau. It is hand made in England using robust carbon steel for exceptional rigidity and durability. Robust stainless steel spike feet isolate the Missions 770 stand and speaker from the floor.

  • The speakers should be positioned 6.5' to 8' apart and form an equilateral triangle with your main seated listening position. They should sit approximately at ear level when you are seated. The speakers can be angled or "toed-in" 15 to 40 degrees to create the ideal "sweet spot". The speakers should also be positioned away from the corner of the room for best sound imaging.
  • The speakers should be placed at least 2" away from the rear wall and 2.3125' away from the side walls. The quality and quantity of bass can be adjusted by moving the speakers closer to, or father from, the wall behind the speakers. If the speakers are placed too far from the walls, the bass may be too light and lack warmth. If the speakers are placed too close to the walls, the bass will increase but may also be boomy and indistinct.

Note: The Mission 770 does not include any bracket, threaded insert, or keyhole slot to wall-mount the speaker.

Designed & Made In the UK: The Mission 770 is not only designed and engineered in the UK, it is also made there too. Mission's parent company, IAG, has expanded its facilities in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire (the traditional home of Mission) to incorporate key manufacturing, assembly and finishing processes for specially selected products (such as the Mission 770), in addition to the R&D function already located there. A 9,000 sq/ft production facility has been added to the existing building in Huntingdon; including a new anechoic chamber, making a total of 25,000 sq/ft of office, lab and manufacturing space.
