A customer favorite gets an upgrade

KEF's original LS50 Wireless speaker system made waves in the audio world and was a huge hit with our customers, offering impressive sonic fidelity in a convenient, self-powered package. The new LS50 Wireless II retains the sleek looks while making some important tweaks for even better performance. For starters, KEF has increased the built-in power, with 280 watts for each woofer and 100 watts for each tweeter.

Revolutionary sound absorption

This speaker benefits from KEF's new and innovative Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT). It's a highly complex, mazelike structure that's tuned to absorb unwanted sound coming from the rear of the tweeter. The resulting sound is clear, purer, and more detailed.

Wireless music streaming options

These speakers are equipped with built-in dual-band Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 5.0 for easy music streaming. The free KEF Connect app offers access to popular music streaming apps, including Spotify® (via Spotify Connect), Tidal, Amazon Music, Qobuz, and Deezer. And internet radio and podcast listening are on tap as well.

Wired connections

The primary speaker in this pair is equipped with the following high-resolution digital inputs for connecting external components:

  • RJ-45 Ethernet port for network connection (accepts signals up to 24-bit/384kHz)
  • HDMI eARC (24-bit/192kHz) for improving sound from a compatible TV
  • Toslink optical digital input (24-bit/96kHz)
  • coaxial digital input (24-bit/192kHz)

There's also an analog 3.5mm auxiliary input and a mono RCA subwoofer output. The speakers can be interconnected via Ethernet cable or wirelessly. (A wired connection allows higher-resolution 24-bit/192kHz playback.)

Cutaway view of KEF LS50 Wireless II speaker

The LS50 Wireless II features a patented offset, flexible port for reduced midrange coloration.

A room-filling "sweet spot," thanks to Uni-Q technology

KEF's patented Uni-Q technology places each speaker's tweeter in the acoustic center of the bass/midrange cone. That lets the LS50 Wireless II create a detailed, accurate, three-dimensional sound image. In essence, it makes the "sweet spot" — the ideal listening position — much larger. Sit wherever you like! It'll sound fantastic.

Careful cabinet design

The LS50 Wireless II's extremely rigid cabinet uses smooth, curved surfaces that help the sound radiate outward without distortion. It also features a patented offset, flexible port for reduced midrange coloration. As with previous LS50 models, the cabinet uses a grille-less design to show off the cool-looking driver array and super-stylish color options.

Get the most out of your speakers

Proper speaker placement is also crucial to getting the best performance out of the LS50 Wireless IIs. Placing them on a pair of color-coordinated KEF S2 speaker stands helps eliminate unwanted vibrations and reflections. Read our article on stereo speaker placement for positioning and setup tips.

24-Bit/384kHz DAC: The KEF LS50 Wireless II utilizes a 24-bit/384kHz DAC (digita-to-analog converter) for audiophile quality playback. The LS50 Wireless II supports digital music files up to 24-bit/384kHz, as well as MQA Decoding and DSD256. All sources are resampled to either 24-bit/96kHz PCM or 24-bit/192kHz PCM; depending on a wired or wireless connection between the LS50 Wireless II's two powered speaker.

  • MQA (Master Quality Authenticated): MQA is a revolutionary end-to-end technology that captures and delivers master quality audio in a file that's small enough to stream or download. MQA lets you hear your streamed digital music files exactly like the way the artist intended you to hear it when it was approved in the studio.
  • DSD (Direct Stream Digital): DSD is high-resolution digital audio format that uses a single bit to deliver a high resolution signal. Instead of sampling the information several thousand times a second, this single bit samples 2.8 million times a second to generate the audio signal. The result is still a Hi-Res audio signal that clean and pure.

Bi-Amplifier Configuration: The built-in amplifiers have been developed in-house by KEF. Each tweeter is driven by a 100W class A/B amplifier that delivers a smooth, incredibly detailed treble performance. Dedicated 280W class D amplifiers power the midbass drivers, for room-filling (up to 328 sq/ft), controlled sound up to 108db. The two powered speakers may be connected together either wirelessly or hard-wired.

  • Wireless Mode: LS50 Wireless II is pre-paired at the factory for easy setup in wireless mode. The wireless transmission is totally independent of the local WiFi signal. The minuscule delay (2.9ms) between the primary and secondary speakers in this mode is automatically accounted for, through an equal delay applied to the primary speaker. The wireless connection re-samples all audio to 24-bit/96kHz. Wireless Mode has a range of 26'.
  • Wired Mode: The wired interspeaker connection uses CAT-6 cable, plugged into the RJ45 sockets on the rear of the speakers. Cable mode must be enabled in the KEF Connect app settings menu. In this mode, all audio signals are resampled to 24-bit/192kHz. The included CAT-6 cable is 10' in length.

Note: Because the LS50 Wireless II is self-powered, each speaker will need to be plugged into an AC wall outlet. Two 6.5' detachable AC power cords are included.

Digital Signal Processing: All aspects of the LS50 Wireless II's performance is aided by KEF’s proprietary Music Integrity Engine. This collection of unique Digital Signal Processing algorithms is optimized for the Uni-Q driver configuration, enabling it to deliver a perfectly timed performance, for better imaging and a tighter sound.

Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT): KEF teamed up with the Acoustic Metamaterials Group (AMG) to use Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) in their LS50 Wireless II powered speaker. Metamaterials are specially developed structures that use existing materials in such a way that they exhibit new, desirable properties that are simply not found in naturally occurring substances. A truly revolutionary technology, MAT is a highly complex maze-like structure, where each of the intricate channels efficiently absorbs a specific frequency. When combined, the channels act as an acoustic black hole, absorbing 99% of the unwanted sound that comes from the rear of the tweeter, eliminating the resulting distortion and providing a purer, more natural acoustic performance.

12th Generation Uni-Q Driver Array: The LS50 Wireless II powered speaker utilizes KEF's patented 12th Generation Uni-Q driver configuration, in which the tweeter is mounted at the acoustic center of the midrange cone. With both acting as a single point source, the sound is dispersed widely and evenly throughout the listening area allowing you to experience superbly defined and perfectly balanced stereo imagery with a wide "sweet spot". Using simulation and analysis tools and decades of accumulated in-house knowledge, KEF engineers developed a 12th Generation Uni-Q driver array, with a new cone neck decoupler and motor system that is precisely shaped to reduce high-frequency distortion in the mid-frequency driver. The result is reduced coloration, less distortion and a sound that is more transparent and life-like than previously possible. The same can also be said of bass performance, where LS50 Wireless II exceeds the expectations of a modestly proportioned bookshelf and standmount speakers to deliver room-filling sound with deep, articulate bass.

  • 1" Aluminum Vented-Dome Tweeter: The geometry of the tweeter dome matches that of the midrange cone to avoid disrupting the waveform. By smoothening high frequency response, this helps to account for the detailed and strikingly natural-sounding treble. The 1" aluminum vented-dome tweeter utilizes a Tangerine Waveguide to encourage the sound to radiate spherically for wider, more even dispersion so that everyone in the room enjoys the same superb sound quality. A large internal vent prevents potentially distorting high pressures from building up behind the dome in the critical vocal region, preserving all the nuance and fine detail of the original performance.
  • 5.25" Aluminum Cone Woofer: The 5.25" woofer uses an Aluminum cone that is light, stiff, and smooth for natural midrange and midbass sound. As well as allowing the midrange cone its full extension, KEF's ingenious Z-flex surround guides the sound from the tweeter across the surround without any disturbance or secondary radiation. Treble response is clearer and sweeter.

Advanced Cabinet Design: From the precision molded curved baffle to the solid, reinforced cabinet, every inch of LS50 Wireless II has been designed to perform. Every aspect of LS50 Wireless II has been considered for acoustic benefits and from a design perspective. The low-diffraction curved front baffle is subtly mirrored by the gently radiused rear panel, where both the port exit and the speaker's inputs/outputs have been elegantly recessed and softened visually.

  • Rigid Cabinet Bracing: The LS50 Wireless II’s extremely rigid cabinet is optimized for the best performance, with smooth curved surfaces that help radiate sound out across the baffle without any interference. Inside the cabinet, cross bracing and Constrained Layer Damping (CLD) combine to deaden internal vibrations. The result of such meticulous attention to detail is that LS50 Wireless II produces the lowest coloration of any speaker in its class.
  • Robust Curved Baffle: LS50 Wireless II's baffle is engineered from an injection-moulded Dough Moulding Compound (DMC), usually found in the automotive industry. The LS50 Wireless II's low-diffraction, curved baffle is precision modelled around the Uni-Q driver array. It’s smooth curved surfaces help radiate sound out across the baffle without any interference from hard edges, which cause diffraction. The result is cleaner, more precise sound.
  • Flexible Port Design: Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the port flare and profile of LS50 Wireless II's patented off-set port is calculated to delay the onset of turbulence, and the flexible port walls prevent resonances from coloring the midrange. This leads to improved clarity, with exceptional depth and detail. Two foam port plugs are included to seal the cabinet if the bass is too "boomy" because of speaker placement.

Note: No grilles are included with the KEF LS50 Wireless II.

Dual Subwoofer Outputs: For even more impact and bass extension, LS50 Wireless II features two mono-RCA subwoofer outputs, to connect a powered subwoofer (sold separately - see Accessories Tab). The KEF Connect App (for Apple iOS 14.0+ and Android OS 8.0+) on your compatible smartphone or tablet device allows you to set the subwoofer outputs' Low Pass Frequency (50 to 120 Hz), Gain (-10 to 10 dB), and Polarity (On or Off). You can also set the speaker's High Pass Frequency (50 to 120 Hz).

Mounting & Placement Options: The speakers should be placed on a flat and level surface that is free from vibration, such as the KEF S2 speaker stands (sold separately). The two speakers are distinguished between the Primary Speaker and the Secondary Speaker. By default, the Primary Speaker is the right channel and should be placed on your right hand side as you face the speakers, while the Secondary Speaker is the left channel and should be placed on your left hand side as you face the speakers.

  • For the best stereo experience, soundstage and stable connection, place the speakers within 26' apart from one another.
  • The optimum distance between the speakers and the listener will depend on how far the Primary Speaker and the Secondary Speaker are separated.
  • Try to keep the same distance of the speakers to the listener so it forms an equilateral triangle.
Network & Internet Integration

Wired or Wireless Network Connectivity: The KEF LS50 Wireless II can be connected to your home network via a wired (Ethernet) or wireless (WiFi) connection. There is a RJ-45 Ethernet port (10/100Mbps) on the back of the speaker which allows for a hardwired connection. Built-in 2.4/5GHz dual-band WiFi (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac) allows the LS50 Wireless II system to connect wirelessly to your home network. This network connection allows support for the KEF Connect App, Apple AirPlay 2, and Chromecast Built-In; plus Roon-Ready. Q
I'm seriously considering these KEF speakers, but am wondering if there's any latency at all? I'd be using these for home DJ use, so there can't be any lag.
tim  Jan 07, 2024
1 answer
A
It would not be advisable to use any of the wireless connectivity available on these speakers for this application. The safest bet for avoiding latency would be to use the AUX input since an analog input source would have no issues with latency. The coaxial digital and optical inputs could also be used, hypothetically, but there may be some possibility for incredibly slight (likely unnoticeable) delay.

Q
If I'd like to run Ethernet cable from a modem to the main, what is the desired length before it become counterproductive and what cat is recommended?
brian  Jan 14, 2023
1 answer
A
You have some flexibility here, Brian. With CAT5 or CAT6 cable you have over 300 feet before the length is an issue. If you prefer to connect your speakers with an ethernet connection you certainly can, we have options up to the 100-foot mark like in the link below. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120C6100BL/Metra-Ethereal-CAT-6-Ethernet-Cable-100-feet-blue.html

Complaints about attached subwoofers being not triggered except at loud volumes?
brian  Mar 26, 2022
1 answer
A
Indeed, you do need to get the volume up to ~ 37 to trigger the subwoofer. Then you can back it down just a bit.

Q
Can these speakers be placed on glass shelves? If not, what kind of stands are needed?
flo  Mar 21, 2022
1 answer
A
These speakers are a little heavy, so as long as the shelves can hold the weight, it should be ok structurally.

Are there photos of the scratch / sent of this product I can see before purchasing ?
zaher  Jul 08, 2021

A
No, but Crutchfield has good return policy. My LS50s were a perfect condition, and don't know why they sold as 'scratch/dent' item.

How can I wirelessly connect from my DAC to these speakers?
william  Jan 05, 2021

A
I can't answer that, but I can say that, for the money, there is probably not a better powered speaker on the market.
raymond  Jan 05, 2021
A
Depends on what you are trying to do. If you want your DAC to output wirelessly you will have to buy a special RCA wireless transmitter, and that may defeat the purpose of a nice DAC. If you want to directly connect your DAC to the speakers you could stream to it via a streamer such as the bluesound node. Honestly, I think the internal steaming and DAC of these are quite good and you shouldn't need to do this at all.
kai  Jan 05, 2021
A
You can't connect a DAC to a wireless speaker.
wei  Jan 05, 2021
A
You don't mention what DAC you have, so I will assume it's not one with bluetooth, in that case look for a bluetooth transmitter with aptX. Although IMO, if you're going to use bluetooth you may as well go with Sonos or even a couple of now discontinued but easily "gettable" Google Max speakers.

Q
I know these are not outdoor speakers but how would they hold up in a covered outdoor area? They would not get wet but they would be subjected to heat and humidity. Thanks.
paul  Nov 16, 2020

A
To put these or any other speakers NOT designated as for outdoor use is a disaster waiting to happen, whether they're undercover or not! Speakers should NOT be subject to large variations in temp or humidity unless they're specifically designed for it.

They look pretty durable, but can't answer for the electronics inside.
john  Nov 16, 2020

I did not have them outside but would not recommend it, just common sense.

Greetings David. The KEF LS50 wireless input voltage range is 100-240 VAC 50/60Hz.

Q
Can 2 sets (4 speakers) be ran in a quad-stereo configuration? Right and left fronts and right and left rears wirelessly of course. If anyone has tried this was there a timing issue between the fronts and rears.
sean  Dec 18, 2021
1 answer
A
I sincerely doubt it, since each pair of speakers has a master and slave sort of setup. I don't see anything in the app that would indicate ability to have more than one slave. The good news is imaging is a major strong suit of these speakers, so you might not even want the quad configuration.

Q
I currently have, and love, the LS50W Nocturne's. Would these be an incredible improvement in a home office to sell and upgrade? It is connected USB to the PC, streamed with Tidal.
david  Nov 28, 2020
4 answers
A
I had the LS50 Wireless Nocturne for about 10 months. The internal amps of the left channel failed and I sold the set after the repair. Quite a few owners have had similar problems with the LS50W, too. KEF has only a 1-year warranty on the internal electronics. That's a red flag to me. Of course, many others have had no such trouble with their LS50W, so take my experience as an individual case. I bought a pair of the new LS50 Meta and am very pleased with the sound. Driven by a good amp + DAC, the LS50 Meta are very comparable with the wireless, IMO.
jeff  Dec 20, 2020
A
The new LS50 Wireless II is clearly better than the first version. I bought both the first and second generation from Crutchfield. While the sound quality is better with the second version, that is not the major reason to upgrade. I was thrilled with the first version and I am more than thrilled with the second version, although I admit that I must say that the sonic increase while real, is modest. However the second version is much, much better in a host of areas. The app (Kef Connect) is much better and actually works. I did have to buy a new tablet because my old Samsung Tab S2 was too old to download the Kef Connect app. This is listed only in a footnote in the manual. You might check if this could be a problem for you. I primarily use Roon and Tidal. The speakers are not currently Roon Ready. That means that Roon currently will not connect to the speakers at all. Kef says that this is coming. In the first version of the LS 50w the integration of Tidal came a few months after I bought the speaker, so I am confident that the new speaker will be Roon Ready soon. In the mean time, I have purchased a Topping D10s DAC ($99) which brilliantly solves two problems. The new LS50 Wireless II no longer has a USB input. I run a USB cable from my computer to the Topping DAC and then Spdif from the DAC to the LS50 Wireless II. Sound quality is flawless. To my surprise, Roon recognized the Topping DAC. This allows me to use Roon on my desktop and utilize the Topping DAC as a Roon Endpoint. This solves the problem of the speakers not yet being Roon Ready. Also, I have a lifetime subscription to Siriusxm. I listen to Siriusxm through the Topping DAC and the sound quality is not bad. I also use Spotify Connect and the sound quality is excellent. The only time I can hear any difference between Spotify and Tidal is the MQA Tidal master recordings, which are audibly better. This could be due to better recording or the MQA process, I don't know. The first version of the LS50w allowed for Spotify Connect, which greatly improved the sound. The second generation of the LS50 wireless now also allows connection to Tidal Connect, which like Spotify Connect greatly improves the signal. Both of these signals are sent directly from the router to the speakers, avoiding the tablet. The audio quality is much, much better in this connection. Finally, the new Kef Connect app connects to most music services (Apple, Amazon, etc.) and includes a comprehensive radio app. It found all my local and national stations. I recommend viewing two Utube videos: John Darko and Steve Guttenberg. Both, rightly, rave about the LS 50 upgrades and they explain nicely the new meta technology.

The speakers sound wise would be an improvement.....incredible would be a stretch but noticeably punchier bass and clean highs.....the incredible improvement is in the use of KEF Connect software. The software is MUCH better and interfaces well with the music services. The old 2 part KEF software just didn't work for me...at all. Also, if you plan on hooking up a tv the new speakers have hdmi/earc which works seamlessly with my tv. Also, the software allows you to set a second auto on with the first being wifi and I set the second auto on to my tv so it's all seamless.
karen  Dec 05, 2020

I would say it isn't an incredible upgrade just 10-20% better to my ears, also the W2 system lacks usb connectivity, so you'd either need to run an external DAC with usb input running to the W2 aux port, or stream wirelessly from your pc with tidal connect. Hope this was helpful.

Q
Are these suitable for use with the Hi Fi Rose RS250, a blu ray player, and a Samsung TV? I'd be using them for two scenarios: listening to hi res audio files on Hi Fi Rose SSD, and separately, watching 4K video from Apple TV, an external HDD or NAS, and sometimes a blu ray player.

A
These would be suitable for use with the HiFi Rose RS250, TV, and Blu-ray player. In combination with these devices, the KEF LS50 Wireless II would do nicely to accommodate your needs.

Q
I've seen reports that combining these speakers with even Kef subwoofers is annoying, because the subwoofers don't trigger until the volume is loud. (So you don't get any sonic benefit from the subwoofers until you crank it up.) (The question filtering won't let me post a link, but search on "Using KEF LS50 Wireless II with a Subwoofer" in the Roon community forums) I'm hoping this has been fixed, since the original complaints are old. Has it been?

I was sincerely happy with the bass coming from these once I realized I had to go into the Kef app, scroll to speaker preferences and toggle on "cable mode" as these are sent out to connect to each other wirelessly: irregardless whether they have an ethernet connecting them or not. However, I ended up pairing my Klipsch R-120SW without any problem with LFE, except that the sub provided waaaaay too much bass and has been turned down to a very low gain, but eventually I will swap with the Polk Audio psw 10 as it has less low freq rumble.
brian  Jan 14, 2023
A
I've been using an SVS SB1000 Pro with my LS50W-II, and have not had any problems with the subwoofer not triggering. I listen to music only, at moderate volumes. It's a great match, even for my largish 18 x 25 x 12 ft room.

Q
is Apple music lossless streaming supported?
louis  Jul 08, 2021
2 answers
A
I've never tried the new service but they are capable of playing and streaming Apple lossless format. It's an older format all high res devices can play. Not sure exactly how it's delivered because I don't think airplay supports resolution higher than 16/44.1 so you probably vant use airplay and get high res. Probably have to use the kef app logged into Apple Music.
stephen  Jul 09, 2021
A
You can stream via Apple Air Play, but Apple Music is not supported at this time. Contact KEF support, they might be working on adding Apple Music in the future.

Q
Would you recommend these for near-field listening (on a desktop on either side of my computer monitor with about 3' distance to ears) in a small 10'x10' room? Or do these really require a larger space to do their thing?

A
For near-field in a small room, you may be able to get as good or better sound AND save a lot of money by going with the LSX.
alexander  Mar 27, 2022
A
I am using the Kef ls 50 wireless II as nearfield desktop speakers. They are fabulous.
steve  Mar 22, 2021
A
I cannot address any question of taste or listening preferences, but for starters, you should read the specs and take note of the dimensions of these speakers. They are not small; they have a footprint larger than a shoebox, and they are heavy. Running them at low enough volume to avoid blasting your eardrums at such close range would be wasting their potential, in addition to probably sacrificing sound quality. I have these speakers at about 60% volume in a 20' X 20' room, listening from about 15 feet away, for comparison, and that's loud enough to drown out AC and fan noises in that room.

Q
Will two KEF LS50 II speakers fill up a 20' by 20' room with high ceilings?
james e  Feb 07, 2021

A
I'm very happy using a pair of LS50W-II in an 18 x 25 x 12 ft room, with an SVS SB1000 pro sub filling out the low end. I'm sure you can achieve similar sound quality using a good high power amp with the non-powered LS50 II. But unless you already have an amp, DAC and streamer, it's much simpler and cheaper to get the LS50W-II. You can use the savings for a sub.

I think you might want a good pair of towers.. I have a similar space for the living room here with high ceilings. The ls50w2 will do good job, but wont give you what a good tower can

My living room is about 18'x17' with 8' ceiling. LS50W II is loud enough but the bass is not rich IMO. I am considering to add a KEF KC62 when it is available.

I have mine in a 18x22 family room with an open floor plan with an adjoining kitchen. I think they sound great.
stephen  Feb 07, 2021

That's a large room for these speakers...I have these in a 15'x18' foot room with 8' ceilings......they work well in that setting....if the room were larger I think they would get lost or sound a bit thin....you can't go against the laws of physics....
karen  Feb 07, 2021

Not in my opinion. They image well. They are portable. They don't really have the oomph for that much room volume. But, I like it loud. Why do you want such small speakers?
