New York Times and Indie Bestseller

There’s no such thing as magic in the broken city of Lkossa, especially for sixteen-year-old Koffi, who indentured to the notorious Night Zoo, knows the fearsome creatures in her care and paying off her family's debts to secure their eventual freedom can be her only focus. But the night those she loves are gravely threatened by the Zoo’s cruel master, Koffi unleashes a power she doesn’t fully understand, upending her life completely.

As the second son of a decorated hero, Ekon is all but destined to become a Son of the Six—an elite warrior—and uphold a family legacy. But on the night of his final rite of passage, Ekon encounters not only the Shetani—a vicious monster that has plagued the city for nearly a century and stalks his nightmares—but Koffi who seems to have the power to ward off the beast. Koffi’s power ultimately saves Ekon, but his choice to let her flee dooms his hopes of becoming a warrior.

Desperate to redeem himself, Ekon vows to hunt the Shetani and end its reign of terror, but he can’t do it alone. Koffi and Ekon form a tentative alliance and together enter the Greater Jungle, a world steeped in wild, frightening magic and untold dangers. The hunt begins. But it quickly becomes unclear whether they are the hunters or the hunted.

YA Fantasy Like None Other
This may just be my new favorite YA story of all time. Ekon and Koffi are such complex and complicated characters that Ayana breathes life into and allows the reader a glimpse into this well-crafted world. It’s a mix of fantasy, magic, and unique creatures that keep your heart pumping fast as you turn the page to see what happens next. I couldn’t stop reading this one and definitely read it faster than most books.I love how Ekon and Koffi go from enemies to something slightly more than friends in this as they both struggle with their own identities and so many things that they thought they knew are questioned and challenged in ways that would have most people reeling for days. Yet these two struggle forward and fight through the roadblocks thrown their way. Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Young Readers for this review copy.

Koffi and her mother are indentured servants at the Night Zoo, which is a prison that the servants can’t seem to escape. The zookeeper continues to add time to their service and they’re kept inside a brick-walled area. One night, the zoo catches on fire and the servants set the animals free and Koffi tries to escape with her mother. Her mother is struck down and Koffi realizes that she’s on her own. Ekon, a soldier, allows her to escape because she saves him from a terrifying creature, the Shetani, but he faces punishment for helping her. The Shetani has been mutilating and killing people for as long as anyone can remember. Koffi meets a kind woman who offers her a job and as she’s heading back to accept the position, she’s attacked by the night zoo manager. Koffi makes a deal with the manager; in exchange for her freedom, she’ll capture the Shetani and return to the night zoo so the creature can be caged and bring curious, paying visitors to the zoo. He agrees. Meanwhile, Ekon plans to find the creature too and bring it back to the temple so the killings can be stopped. Through some mishaps, Koffi and Ekon eventually team up to capture the Shetani and their lives change forever. This is a delightful book to read, two emotionally flawed main characters, the mystery behind the Shetani, African mythology and the unexpected twist at the ending, 5 stars!

If there was ever a time I felt like I was apart of a cinematic movie, this book would've been all the film I needed. Koffi and Ekron are two splices of life meshed together under unfortunate circumstances to reclaim their life and save their nation.

This book provided everything I was looking for: vivid imagery, historical references (if you read the author's note, you'd know a lot of research went into this book and it clearly shows), a dynamic tag team with colorful dialogue and a cute, budding romance. I had to force myself to read this slowly because I was afraid I would read it so fast and feel so empty knowing the second book isn't ready yet.

And can I say, as a black self-published author who has dreamed of reading and writing and a black fantasy novel that didn't have to center around dark pasts, I was truly inspired to keep writing that little nagging story idea that won't quite leave me alone knowing that an adventure novel like this can exist in a world where so few full black casts are celebrated and placed on the forefront of the publishing industry. While this book isn't completely void of life lessons, it was nice to read something that wasn't obligated to reference our dark history. It was truly a fun-loving adventure novel with beautiful twists and a "splendid" ending.

I am at the edge of my seat, waiting with baited breath for the next installment of this book. I can guarantee you, I will be the first in line.

This is a very cool world that has two timelines intertwined into one story. The sooner you figure that out, the less confusing it is.

Overall I enjoyed the world building and lore, I just struggled at times with character decisions. I know this is a YA, and therefore some questionable decisions should be expected, but Ekon was particularly frustrating.

Spoilers ahead:
As he was being wishy-washy about betraying people near the end, all I could think was how he was literally going to betray a goddess without a second thought. And then he did. He didnt even think twice about Badwa when he was feeling bad after his betrayal and shes a goddess he worshipped his entire life and met in the flesh. Ok, lol. So weird to me.

This is a great story. Interesting characters in a unique and fascinating world. Plenty of intrigue and action. Ends with a cliffhanger so I must read the next book.

Alana Gray is a very good story teller. I look forward to reading this story to its end. It has just the right amount of mystic power entwined throughout the story. An indentured servants finds out she can summon magic. Then discovers there are others like her. There are three stories involving the main characters. Their stories slowly start to merge towards the last third of the book. The book ends in a cliff hanger.

I wanted to love this book but it just didn’t hit the spot for me as a 36 year old woman . I’m sure if this had come out when I was a teen or in my early twenties I would have enjoyed it more .

The consistency of the interesting parts /ones that held my attention weren’t consistent enough .

What we get are two stories that parallel each other - one in the past , one in the present and by the end of the story we see how they go hand in hand together .

I love, love , love Koffi + Ekon together . He has his quirks and is precise and calculated - she is pretty much the opposite . Their interaction and banter is cute and funny and I 100% feel their connection /attraction .

I really enjoyed the African lore that the author wrote in the story . I enjoyed all the rest of the characters as well .

I was able to get my book signed and meet Ayanna herself in the first official day of signing books /book tour and she’s a delight ! I’m happy to be able to support her .

While this book wasn’t enough for me to want to keep on my shelves , I still look forward to book two in this series and can’t wait to see the tv show /movie about it .

When Koffi, in indentured servant, finds herself trekking through the jungle with disgraced trainee soldier Ekon, she learns more about herself than she could ever have imagined. In a world full of magnificent creatures and awe inspiring magic, their adventure looks set to change everything.

I found the pacing of this book a little strange - the beginning was very slow and could have been significantly cut down. However, about half way through it picks up and I found it hard to put down! The creatures and plants in the jungle made for a really beautiful adventure fantasy!

I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
