A noticeable upgrade from it's predecessor

A noticeable upgrade from it's predecessor
I'm reviewing the 2024 Paperwhite as an upgrade to my 2018 edition.Size - the 2024 edition features a 1" vertical increase over the older model and approximately .5" horizontal increase from the 2018 model. This isn't extremely noticeable to me unless I place them side by side or stack them as I'm doing in the images. If you prefer the smaller size for how compact it is then avoid this one. The increase in screen size does also include slightly less bezel space which is always nice.Comfort - I'm not about to weigh them on a scale, I'd rather just hold both as it's more realistic to feel. There isn't much of a difference in weight as they're both already very light so I don't suspect you'll get tired of holding them. The lack of a grip of any kind as the surfaces are smooth can make it difficult to hold them up some times. The screen does have a sort of rough almost paper like feel to it that I enjoy.Functionality - the difference in rendering speed is the most easily seen feature. The old model made it difficult to enjoy using it for me because of how it felt like it was having a seizure with every input. This newer model doesn't completely remove the weird light show of e-ink reprinting but it does it extremely quick in comparison.Color - there isn't any lol, you get dark mode or normal mode. They're both just different shades of gray 🩶. You also get a "warm" lighting option which can give it more of a tan color which may seem similar to a books pages. But that's all preferences.Ease of use - in my old Kindle, purchasing a book was a pain and honestly I struggled with this because I couldn't do it from the Kindle. I had to go on Amazon to do it. This newer edition lets me do it with no problem straight from the device. That alone is worth its weight to me.Quality - I've had both my 2018 and 2024 models without any protective case and have taken them out to the beach and camping. I usually just shove them in my travel box with things like other electronics (steam deck + laptop + cables). None of them have a scratch on them and even my 2018 model still looks and works like new. I'm usually an Amazon hardware hater but these Kindles are made out of great-quality material and the batteries can last for weeks on a single charge. Conclusion - I'm not a fan of any of Amazon's products, but the changes I've seen on this kindle Paperwhite shows me that at least one of Amazon's departments cares about their products and their QA process. I don't regret this purchase, which is huge when talking about an Amazon product as many of them are littered with old bugs that break common functionality. The Kindle e-reader product while extremely overpriced (largely due to the cost of e-ink) for what it does as an e-reader, it is definitely a well-made product.

I recently purchased the Kindle Paperwhite 12th generation (2024) because I want to read more actual books (vs. articles and work material). This Kindle replaces two of the basic versions from the past few years that I honestly rarely/never used because the visuals were grey and slow-moving.

No longer! The Kindle Paperwhite is superior in every way. Wait for sale or take the 20% trade-in if you already have a Kindle. I also found that if you return to Amazon to look at the item several times it may magically go on sale!

The new Paperwhite is comfortable to hold, the "pages" turn at amazing speed, the usual font sizing options are there, as well as the adjustable warm light which is really the key for eye comfort for me. The clarity of the text is far, far better than on the basic Kindle, really noticeable. It's easier to highlight text and make notations than on the basic Kindle models, too.

If you're on the fence between the basic Kindle and the Paperwhite, try to get the Paperwhite. The reading experience is measurably better.

I suggest getting a cover because the Paperwhite, like the rest of the Kindle family, is thin and very portable, but needs the protection of a firm cover, imo. If you do take advantage of the 20% trade-in or other offers, be sure to follow-up to be sure the discounts hit your account. It can take a little time but it's a good option.

After years of being a staunch paperback book lover, I finally get the appeal of the e-reader. I love this thing, and honestly, I don't know if I can ever go back to reading paper books.

The best way to describe this little device is like a calculator but for books. It's function is to make reader easier, more accessible, and in your control. While the interface is quite simple, I like that it's streamlined for its one task: reading books! It's light weight, the screen and words and very crisp, and it is very responsive to touch when turning the page. I was a little weary that this didn't come with a physical touch button, but the screen is so responsive that I find it's not necessary. The unique backlit build makes it even easier to read then a paperback, especially in the dark!

Paired with a well-fitted, high quality case, you can truly keep an entire library in your pocket. I purchased a beautiful leader case with a built-stand stand and strap so I really can read anywhere - in the bath, while eating, etc. Plus, it has seamless integration with both GoodReads and Libby. I love that you can highlight parts of the book and it automatically updates on GoodReads for you. Plus, Amazon claims that it has 'days of battery life' and that is no joke. I haven't charged it at all and I've read three books on it already.

I got the black, and I'm a sucker for color - but it honestly doesn't matter if you're getting a case. If you've been thinking of making the jump to an e-reader, go for it! You won't regret it. I am happily living in my book era.

I received my Kindle PW (Paper White) 2024 yesterday!

My Kindle History Up to Current:
I was using the previous PW which I loved until losing it on a flight - so I dusted off my 2018 PW, popped on a new case and have been using it again for the past 2 years again.
Initially I was holding out for the Colorsoft version. However, when it finally came out the reviews were mediocre to poor. The clincher against my buying the Colorsoft was reading that even in B&W mode, the resolution wasn't as crisp as the standard Kindle PW products. So given the choice between mediocre resolution + mediocre color vs excellent B&W I opted for the 2024 PW.
From reading reviews on it across the spectrum here, I admit I had the return already prepared.
However, my unit arrived in beautiful condition.

    Color:
The chief thing I was looking for was the complaint regarding predominantly yellow screen with the bottom ‘yellower’ band. Not sure if these were faults with the earlier units.
On mine, if I have warmth at 0 and the brightness turned up, the color while not being cool, is about as neutral as possible against physical paper. Dimming to 0 relying on ambient light exaggerates the warmth on the Kindle device especially in my place which uses 2700K warm white light sources.
The uniformity on the page is perfect - I have not been able to create the darker color band on the lower screen that several reviewers have reported.
I haven't yet taken it out into sunlight. I still find the page color at all spectrums is well within my comfort for reading as with paper books where there are also many variations of white color on the pages under different light sources.

    Resolution:
Before ordering I researched the difference between eink and eink carta as my 2018 PW also has 300 ppi. I can't say there is a noticeable difference in the clarity between the 2018 and 2024 unless I look at it under magnifying glass side by side. The difference is nowhere near as detectable as when I upgraded from my 1st gen Kindle to the 2018 PW. In any case both are acceptable and the 2024 resolution is crisp and beautiful as I expected.
EDIT: I finally used this at night in the dark with the brightness set at 8.
During the day, the resolution to my naked eye looked about the same as my 2018 PW.
At night though, the 2024 PW looks far neater and crisper than the older model, even though both are 300 points (the eink Carta difference at work)

    Performance:
This area is where I could really feel the upgrade.
I had no complaints on reading the 2018, but starting, inputting my pin or typing anything in the search area, there was noticeable lag that I was accustomed to since using my first Kindle device.
The 2024 has almost no latency; if it does I have a hard time noticing it. Whether keying in my PIN or typing a search, it is now as instantly responsive as typing on my phone or tablet.
The page turning is as crisp as advertised, and I’m enjoying the animation.

    Size, Weight, Etc .
Form Factor - I'm still in love!
Size - I loved the compact size of the 2018 - almost same as small paperback. While the 2024 is a hair larger, I know I'll acclimate with no problem. It's now about the same as a larger paperback - but much lighter in most cases. I also use it with the Cobak Jade color case - while I love the minimalism of the naked Kindle device, having the stand for me is a must rather than having to hold it. Of course, I remove the case when I want to use it in the hot tub.

    Power Button Location
Jury is still out on this.
I really wish they'd move the power button to the top. On all the Kindles I have owned over the years, I'm annoyed when I hold the unit (even with the case) my finger tends to brush the power button putting the unit to sleep while I'm reading!
On this 2024 PW, I'm noticing that with the increased width and offset position of the button, this may be enough for me to avoid the problem as I typically hold the unit on the bottom dead center, so I'll reserve judgement until I have used the product more.

Overall, while I could have used my 2018 a few more years, the improvements in the 2024 made upgrading completely worthwhile.
