In January 2017, Chimene Suleyman was on her way to an abortion clinic in Queens, New York with her boyfriend, the father of her nascent child. It was the last day they would spend together. In an extraordinary sequence of events, Chimene was to discover the truth of her boyfriend's that she and many other women had been subtly, patiently and painfully betrayed.

In this spellbinding memoir, she exposes one man's control over many women and the trauma he left behind, and celebrates the sisterhood that formed in his wake despite - and in spite of - him. Exploring how women are duped every day by individuals, she interrogates how society itself continually allows this to happen. She demonstrates that, no matter how intelligent, educated or self-aware they might be, over time a woman can be played into performing the age-old role of giver and self-sacrificing and subordinate.

Both a devastating personal testimony and a searing indictment of persistent misogyny, The Chain is a book for any woman who has questioned her relationship and buried her doubts, for any woman who can't quite identify the source of her unease and for any woman who has been sheltered by the fierce protection of her female friends.

The Chain: Love, Betrayal, and the Sisterhood That Heals Us - Chimene Suleyman – 2024-
In this stunning memoir, Ms. Suleyman, returned to her apartment after deciding to terminate her pregnancy, to her dismay, “Mr. Ex” had quickly packed his belongings and abandoned her during her clinic appointment (2017). On Instagram, she discovered an international) “chain” of ay least 40 women who had been deceived and manipulated by this man, he had also stolen thousands of dollars and costly personal items. He had coerced others to abort, and/or abandoned children he had fathered. After leaving Ms. Suleyman, Mr. Ex had promptly moved to London, married a fiancée “in waiting,” who insisted her new husband had done nothing wrong despite the increasing numbers of women that identified and denounced him.

As a single British Muslim woman, she investigated her experience over several years, and discovered a culture of male toxicity, that enabled the entitled misogynic con-men who targeted and preyed on vulnerable women. Unfortunately, this is more common than most people realize! It was surprising, that in her own community, she found little support where as “Mr. Ex” was praised for “moving on” leaving a toxic relationship, seeking mental wellness etc. Women who had been victimized discovered they were often villainized and viewed as scorned, vengeful, depressive’s no one wanted to be affiliated with. It was fortunate that Suleyman was able to connect with women online who had been targeted by “Mr. Ex”: stolen personal items were also returned to their rightful owners, as these women were able to gain truth and understanding within their healing sisterhood of health and wellness. Highly recommended!

Brave and intimate - I couldn't put this memoir down. Excellent storytelling, though heartbreaking at times, there is hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Power and passion on every page

One of those books you want to force into the hands of any woman you know who has been through a toxic relationship. Her prose is muscular and insistent and doesn’t let up til the end and her story is, as it becomes apparent through the book, not uncommon. Draws light towards the baseline of misogyny we live with day to day and offers hope through female unity and the friendships she made through one awful joke of a man. If you need a sister, read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars eye opening account of most women’s lived experience

To some degree, at least, all of us know at least some of these men. Almost all of us have been in some way affected by them.

Really interesting read, even as someone who is now with a really wonderful man, but remembers the struggle to get here. The many men who behaved badly, the many friends who still continue to have terrible experiences with these men, the vastness of the pain they’re capable of causing.

The strength of women united. The adoration I have for all the women in my life, who have dealt with these experiences and have helped me and others do the same.

I couldn't put this book down. It was still a very sad read though. And what an absolute psychopathic creep the ex was!

2.0 out of 5 stars I related, but...

This is an important story to talk about I agree with that. As soon as I saw it in the paper I related and got it on kindle. But the book is real let down from the article. It doesn't tell you much more facts but she does go on and on until it's like listening to one of those friends who always moan at you and are really embittered like a hundred years after the fact.
IMHO if she'd listened to the actual ladies in the Chain a bit and we could hear from them that would be good. For instance Zoe who thought up leaving the picture on Instagram and started the whole thing. I would like to know how she got the idea and how it felt for her and how she is doing. The way Chimene wrote it all the ladies are like a blur. I think its her writing style.
Another thing I didn't understand was the way she was saying she was Black when so far as I can see in the pictures she's a pretty blonde??! But 2 stars for the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A devastatingly powerful book

I want to hand this book to every woman I know and tell them to read it in a single sitting because it is so beautifully written. A harrowing account of abuse turned into a powerful moment of sisterhood. Suleyman is one of the best writers of our time and deserves all the love in the world.
