- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024Most things you either love or hate. I have to say that I love this machine but hate it at the same time. What I love is the gorgeous design, the superior coffee it makes, and the modernizing of the siphoning method. What I hate is how fiddly it is, how difficult it is to assemble, how impossible it is to clean out the stray bits of grounds that sneak into every little crevice and how it does not allow for quick turnaround to make another cup. The capacity of the machine (even though it says 2 cups) is about the size of my Keurig 1 cup. Keurig is so convenient and we are able to make our cups in quick succession. Unfortunately, the coffee is only so-so. The Siphonysta makes delicious coffee but it is totally impractical unless you live alone and are extremely dexterous. After numerous attempts, I have yet to be able to get the cylinder together properly. My husband finally managed it but with much difficulty. And woe be unto you if you are just a tiny bit off in the assembly: the water leaks everywhere...This is just too much work for a cup of coffee-a French Press would be a better option with similar results in quality. I am sad to have to return it...it is just SO cool looking on the counter. But return it I must. $500 for a paper weight is just way too much to spend. I wish this company the best of luck and hope they can work out the issues. I'll be first in line if they do...
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2022This machine has replaced everything I previously used to make coffee at home. I purchased the Siphonysta approximately a month ago, admittedly somewhat skeptical of how I would like it. After having it for a month I can confidently say I won’t be going back to my previous coffee making methods.
Having had siphon coffee a few times at boutique coffee shops I had high expectations and immediately went shopping for a variety of beans to run through it. I prefer medium to dark roasts most of the time, but the aromas and subtle notes this thing brings out has me looking for more and more varieties to try.
The first cup I ran was on the recommended Dual Temp setting with some Stumptown Hundred Mile and oh man was that good. Almost too good as I drank the entire cup in a few minutes and immediately went to make another.
Breaking away from the Dual Temp setting, I really like the adjustability provided with the acidity/bitterness and light/strong adjustments. I’ve locked in exactly how I like each of the roasts I’ve stockpiled in the last month by running them at the different settings. I like my coffee strong and usually stick to medium or strong, but the acidity/bitterness setting really changes the experience. The variability in that setting alone is worth it as some roasts just don’t sit right unless they are one way or the other in terms of acidic/bitter. I also like how the quick start guide has some recommendations based on the types of coffee you’re using.
I can’t say enough how much I love this thing. The fact that I can have siphon coffee in under 5 minutes at home and then clean everything up in a couple more minutes is a game changer.
I did have a couple hiccups in the beginning though that were extremely easy to fix. First, get your grind right. On my Oxo grinder an 8-9 is perfect. If even the slightest coffee ground makes it through to the dispenser area the valve can get stuck and then the machine can’t form the required vacuum in the chamber. You’ll know this happened when it can’t pull the brewed coffee through the siphon to the top. I learned this from the very courteous team at Tiger. My recommendation is that when you are putting the fresh coffee grounds in the bottom chamber, hold down the tube on the filter so that it is seated properly at the bottom. This only happened in the first day and I’ve had a month of use since with no issues.
Other tips the very nice person at Tiger mentioned are to make sure the top chamber is firmly clicked in to the middle section that locks into the machine. They also reiterated to press down on the top chamber when turning the lever that locks in but that was on a sticker on the machine as well.
Overall, this machine is great and really changed my at-home coffee regimen. It’s also a great showpiece when in action and everyone I’ve made a cup for has been impressed not only with the presentation and the build quality, but also the quality of the coffee it makes.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2025The media could not be loaded.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2023I use vacuum or siphon pots exclusively. Have for three decades. That said, Ill admit, I'm a lazy person and I'm always looking for a new type that may automate the process so I don't have to stay near a heat source in the kitchen to time the brew. So I popped for the Siphonysta.
First, the pluses:
-Yes, it makes a fantastic cup!
It has settings to customize the taste and I'm enjoying playing with the adjustments based on the beans.
-Its well-automated.
You can press the on-button, get ready for work in the morning and have the cup ready on return to your kitchen, (although there is no post-brew heat source to keep it warm for long).
-Its a relatively easy clean up, as siphons go.
All syphon pots can get messy what with the used grind that has to be scooped out after a use. That's baseline for this brewing method. The Siphonysta is not as annoying a washout job as other hourglass vacuum models. Also no glass to crack in the sink. The brewing capsule is plastic (although that has its own problems I'll get into later).
Now the negatives:
-When I say you get a fantastic cup, I mean it... really...only a cup.
The "2 cup" measure on the water carafe is laughably stingy. So, unless you want to hang out brewing and dumping grind repeatedly, this is a machine is for a single person, who drinks only a cup, and doesn't have visitors. It is a problem for me, as I'm only ok with single cup machines if I'm getting an excellent espresso. Its rather annoying for my weekend coffee experience, when I want refills and have friends for brunch.
-You have to be precise when you attach all the components EVERY time.
First you could spill grind into the space under the screen filter with a very minor jostle. The grind is then sucked into the upper carafe with your brew. Um...tasty! Worse, the grind can get caught under one of the upper valves, jamming it open. Then the pressure gradient is lost or you have a leak.
Second, the dome top also has to be screwed on well, another way to lose the gradient. The liquid wont travel back up to the top carafe if there is no pressure differential. You've just wasted a brew and you get to throw the whole muck out.
Third if not assembled perfectly, the capsule may not click into the machine and then you are left screwing and unscrewing the parts again to find out the source of the problem. That's not something you want to have to deal with in the AM when you are trying to get ready for work. Its a learning curve.
-The parts are not the best quality and I get the feeling that the brewing capsule is living on borrowed time.
A machine of this price should have parts that click or twist solidly into place and plastic that's thick enough not to rapidly strip or wear down. The dome lid is worrisomely thin and I'm concerned about how long the screw threads will last. When the dome loses its ability to seal, then there will be no pressure and the contraption wont work anymore. I'm hoping the company will still be in business to ship replacement parts.
- Finally, after a month and a half of use the plastic is already starting to become translucent with use.
I'm serious, I am not over or under cleaning the parts. They are just aging that fast.
That said, I haven't returned it and, as long as it works, Ill use it. The Siphonysta really DOES make an excellent cup of joe. The technology is solid. I just think they need to work out the details, strengthen the quality of the parts for the current price point or bring down the cost of the machine to compensate for the quality they have. AND they must stay in business for customer service needs! Please?
