    Best in Class, but...
    4 out of 5 stars
    Best in Class, but...
The performance is as good as PC Mag reported. It works with NVRs and Blue Iris, and no subscription is required. The form factor is almost as small as the Wyze Cam V3, but without being forever trapped within the Wyze ecosystem, which does not support any security hardware or software other than their own inbred solutions. The audio from Tapo's built in microphone is good enough to actually use and under ideal lighting conditions, the video can look as good as that from multi-hundred-dollar professional cameras. With that said, while I do genuinely appreciate the fact that it is usable with NVRs / Blue Iris, the configuration process is arcane. The camera has no built-in web GUI, so all administration must be done via mobile app. It "works", but is clumsy, arcane, and quite limited compared to a real web GUI. Not that I've seen any other camera in this price class that is any better in this regard...it's just that Tapo came so close to greatness! The build is functional and even attractive, in a certain way, but is entirely plastic. I'm sure I could wreck it with two fingers. But it's also quite light, so if kept out of harm's way, may hold up for a while. There is no way to get portrait or "corridor" mode with a ceiling mount. It would be possible with a wall mount, although somewhat awkward-looking. And while Blue Iris allows camera rotation in 90 degree increments, the Tapo mobile app provides only an "invert image" option.Be aware that if you want to use this camera without a subscription and without an NVR, you're going to need a micoSD card, and if you want enough storage for 30 days of continuous recording, it's going to cost you double the price of the camera itself. For every camera. This is a fallacy of distributed storage. And since SD card makers are reticent to publish meaningful durability specs, there is no way to predict how long that expensive storage will survive. That, and if a bad actor should swipe your camera, the recording of the deed will be gone as well. Since the C120 has no web GUI, unless one is using Blue Iris, it is not possible to monitor live video using a real computer, short of awkward use with third party software such as VLC.If you plan to use the camera with Blue Iris, then you won't care about SD card problems, but you will care about how arcane the setup process is. You'll also care that there may be no way to firewall the camera from the internet without also breaking the mobile app, which is, again, the only way to administer the camera. And one more limitation that can be more challenging than one might imagine - there is no way to change or even replace the supplied power cable. It has a USB-C connector on the camera end, which at first seems somewhat universal, but no - take a look at the attached photo. The one on the left is advertised as working with the C120. The cable that comes with the C121 (the black version of the same camera) is on the one on the right. Notice the notched shoulder around the perimeter of the connector, , which exactly fits within the rubber grommet on the camera. The white one won't even make contact. Nobody is talking about this, but I think it's a big deal. I asked Tapo for help, but they gave me none. They were unwilling/unable even to sell or provide a replacement identical to the original cable, let alone a longer one.3 meters is not long enough for most mounting locations, and there is no way to get a longer cable. For that matter, if the original cable fails, the camera will become entirely useless. Ridiculous. Maybe one could hack out the rubber boot, but then the camera would no longer be water resistant. A frustrating example of planned obsolescence. Or perhaps, just very bad planning. If it was an Apple device, they'd make it where only their own cables would work, and then sell the cables for $50 each. At the very least, Tapo is missing an opportunity. For that matter, while USB-C may be all the rage these days, it has significant length limitations. By comparison, a more traditional coaxial power connector would make it possible to accommodate a wide range of connector styles, since the OD of the connector barrel remains constant across all styles. In addition, simple 2-conductor cable is physically smaller, less conspicuous, less expensive, and works fine at much greater lengths. And a smaller round connector is easier to poke through holes for more elegant/permanent installations.Of course, Tapo could solve this problem, and more, by providing a PoE option. It would be great to be able to have a hardwired network option, and PoE is such a great way to power a camera, providing a safe power supply with virtually unlimited length and routing options. As opposed to having janky extension cords (and the camera's power supply brick), outside in the weather. Because, again, the provided cable is only 10-feet long. And the included power supply is not protected against the weather. It's either that, or mount the camera outside, close enough to a window to run the short power cable in though the window. Which may then damage the non-replaceable cable. And even if one manages to get the power brick inside, the chances of an outlet being near enough are next to none. This is Tapo's Achilles heal. There is no elegant way to power the camera at outdoor locations that might otherwise be the most ideal. Assuming, of course, that one has adequate Wi-Fi coverage outside, where the camera(s) need to be. PoE would solve both problems.Until such time if/when TP-Link addresses these issues, the C120 is best-suited to indoor use, or to very fortunate/clever outdoor installations. Maybe mount them inside of windows, with the understanding that the on-camera illuminators will be made useless by the glass. The Starlight sensor is pretty good, to a point, but reflections from indoor lights can be crippling, and in any case, one would need some outdoor lighting in order to get useful nighttime video.

Great picture quality, day or night. Easy app navigation. Simple installation. And the price point was half of our previous Wyze cameras, without the glitchy playback. Love having inexpensive security cameras with local storage (memory cards).

I got this camera for the purpose of identifying how many stray cats were actually coming by to eat the food Iโ€™ve been putting out. I intend on finding them a soft place to land, before winter comes around. This has been fantastic for this purpose. It lets me know anytime it identifies a โ€œpet.โ€ It does tend to identify virtually any animal as a โ€œpet,โ€ but I still appreciate this feature. I enjoy seeing all sorts of critters come by, anyway. Iโ€™ve also been able to identify an injured, elderly stray cat (shown in the video). Iโ€™ve been feeding this stray for about a year and I wrongly assumed he had stopped coming around. Iโ€™m glad to see that regular feeding has improved his weight, but I am heartbroken to see he is injured and in pain. I will help him, though, now that I know.

With the help of this camera, Iโ€™ve been able to identify 4-5 stray cats so that I can plan for their rescues/rehoming accordingly. I get a notification saying the app has identified a pet and it shows me about a 15-second playback of the โ€œpetโ€ in question, each time. I can go back and view all of these playbacks, at any point, and take snapshots, record, download, etc.

It does a great job of identifying people, also, even down the street. As long as itโ€™s within view, the camera will let you know. You can adjust the sensitivity (lower and less frequent notifications vs higher and more frequent), set times when you do/donโ€™t want notifications, place lines/barriers down (anytime something/someone crosses the line, itโ€™ll notify you). Itโ€™ll alert you of vehicles, noises (cat meowing, dog barking, glass breaking, baby crying). The light on the camera is also pretty strong. It does a decent job illuminating my patio area in the middle of the night. I donโ€™t keep it on, regularly, but Iโ€™ll put it on for a few moments just to check the are before I go outside to feed, at night.

Honestly, I think itโ€™s better than the Ring camera and itโ€™s a fraction of the price. I will buy more of these, as I donโ€™t think a better deal exists. Thereโ€™s just not a better camera at this price point. Even many above this price point are underwhelming. Setup is beyond easy with multiple mounting options. You can put it pretty much anywhere. Itโ€™s all very intuitive. I wish I had gotten this weeks ago, as it would have given me more time to work out a solution for these cats. I think this camera would be good for anyone involved in rescue, or the [ethical] breeding of animals. It could be great tool to utilize when on foal watch, for example. This company has a ton of other products, as well, including loads of other camera options. Highly recommend.

These cameras are cheaper, better constructed, and clearer than any of the previous Tapo/Kasa cameras I have used. They are also more compact and easier to mount. The base is magnetic, although there is a single screw hole you can use if you want a solid connection. The magnet is strong but I feel like some bad weather might knock it around a bit. A single self-tapping sheet metal screw and I had it secured to my galvanized post. It does also come with a separate metal plate to mount it to non-magnetic surfaces, as well as the double-sided 3M tape which may work better on some surfaces. The included USB cable is pretty long. It was long enough for me to run through the wall to my nearest indoor outlet. The Iimage is just spectacular and the color night vision is pretty cool (note : the color night vision only works when the spotlights come on momentarily, but this is no issue.) the body of the camera is metal unlike many cameras in its class and although it is stationary it has quickly become my favorite. This model does not have an internal battery but if you don't need that then you save a lot of space. Big plus, these will work with Blue Iris NVR software, but you will have to do some research on how to set them up for it. Basically you still have to use the Tapo app to set them up but after that they will connect to other NVR software. These are a fantastic value and I'll definitely be buying more.

Really the best bang for your buck.

My husband and I been having troubles with some neighbors that like to drink and start trouble in the neighborhood.
We needed a security camera just to make sure that they did not do anything to our property and also we thought it is good to have a security camera , just in case , you never know .
So my husband looked through tons of cameras before he found this one .
      We love it .
Has all the bells and whistles you will need and the picture and sound come in nice and clear .
The night vision is amazing how clear and bright it comes out .
We love all the features it has and amazed at the low price .
We are so happy we got this camera and use it everyday and review all the videos when we get alerts to our phone .
We are just so happy with this security camera and highly recommend this to anyone who wants a security camera to feel safer and to be able to monitor around your house even when you are not there .

this camera has probably be one of the most cleanest quality camera that I've seen. and it's on sale for such a great price too. in addition to that, the app that comes with it is very easy to use and there is a subscription option for you to save your recordings in their cloud/storage. as the cheapskate that I am, I of course opted for the SD card option and just save certain recordings. with all of these positive qualities, there is one downside and to me that is the audio quality. it is terrible. its like the quality of white noise. other than that....everything is pretty good

Favorite outdoor camera yet. Clear view and colors even at night. Previously had a Wyze cam v2 and v3.... this particular one is so much better with better AI tracking in my opinion.

      Pros:
Small, easy to install, no hidden fee, optional cloud function, USB C powered, and communicates well with other Tapo and Kasa products (lights, switches, etc)

      Cons:
Not really good at looking through a window at night, mainly because of interior light reflections, need a power source outside because running a cable though my window all winter was a bad idea
