Editorial Reviews

By turns devotional, empowering and nurturing, Jon Hopkins’ RITUAL is a 41-minute electronic symphony built from cavernous subs, hypnotic drumming and transcendent melodic interplay. Tense, immersive and ultimately triumphant, it is a culmination of themes explored throughout his 22-year career, and acts as the kinetic counterpart to 2021’s Music For Psychedelic Therapy. A single piece unfolding over eight chapters, RITUAL is personified by depth and contrast. Taking ceremony, spiritual liberation and the hero's journey as inspiration, it taps into an ancient and primal energy. Featuring long-term collaborators Vylana, 7RAYS, Ishq, Clark, Emma Smith, Daisy Vatalaro and Cherif Hashizume, RITUAL came together within the second half of 2023, but initial seeds were sown in 2022, when Hopkins was commissioned to compose for the stroboscopic Dreamachine experience in London. A project that felt ceremonial from the outset, this shorter piece was the embryo of RITUAL, with Hopkins gaining inspiration from the feeling of intention that is inherent in the Dreamachine space. RITUAL is both emotionally and sonically heavy, whilst retaining a warm, live feel, where the juxtaposition between softness and intensity forms the core of the whole. So take time, prepare and immerse in RITUAL for 41 minutes of uninterrupted listening: sonic divination of the most potent form. this is a classic, sounding like a movie score . ambient, driving, creative.

I don’t know if I’m qualified to write a review about this CD. I just don’t have the words to describe how amazing it is. So I guess I’ll just use some descriptive phrases like “his Mona Lisa of all his works“. Or “about as perfect as an electronic album can be“ or “a pulsing sonic meditation that takes you inward then leaves you finding yourself on the outside with a compulsion to move your body to the rhythm“ or “a natural psychoactive mind trip“. I could go on, but you get the picture. Anyone attracted to a musical experience that truly delivers satisfaction on all levels one can gain from listening to music, will surely be satisfied by purchasing this CD. This is his masterpiece. Thank you, Jon…

Hopkins is a true artist. A superbly produced instrumental masterpiece. He’ll also be contributing to Coldplay’s forthcoming release and undoubtedly will add his musical talents to many more artists!

This is what you call an artist hitting their middle age phase when they got tired, ran out of ideas, lost energy and want to do some meditative works to pass the time. Yup it’s one of those.
It sounds like anybody’s ambient works out there in the world, it’s just really basic, monotonous, standard, stock, unimaginative and derivative, it’s not worth buying, it’s something you might hear on any ambient radio channel being broadcast and you just tune in cos it’s there and zone out, but not something you would rush out to buy for repeat hearing unlike his earlier works.
Completely disappointing and boring. You can totally skip it like you would with all these types of standard ambient stuff out there in the billions by every tune of this kind over the past 50 years that were brushed aside because it’s just stock standard

4.0 out of 5 stars Question of ambient taste
Reviewed in Canada on October 12, 2024
Similar to his last release (Music for Psychedelic Therapy) in many ways -- mainly ambient, with relatively few shifts to different textures or rhythms as the tracks go by. The album does (very slowly) build up to a tribal-drumming climax, of course, though to me the results seem more oppressive than celebratory ... All relieved by some delicate, pretty piano lines at the very end, seeming to hark back to his earlier works. According to the artist, the album is supposed to soundtrack or simulate an ayahuasca trip, so while listening with a clear head maybe I'm missing a key part of the experience. I guess you need to buy in to it. Most of the reviews here seem ravingly positive. But overall, the album demands a level of passivity that I find myself reluctant to provide. So it's back to recent Tangerine Dream releases for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars An audio journey that is pleasingly eveloping
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 29, 2024
Ritual is my introduction to Jon Hopkins, and I have to say I am already quite hooked. I've been playing it over and over...and over. It's in my head!

This 'piece' (I think Ritual actually presents as one 'piece' really, even if divided by tracks. This piece of music adds layers ever so gradually, the repetitive beats drawing you in along the way, increasing your expectation, and letting you know that something is ahead...and by the time you get to 'evocation' you know that you are on the brink of something 'bigger' and then you get hit with 'solar goddess return' which is just brilliant: the door is opened to an even bigger cavern of sound and it's hypnotic, enveloping...and after nearly 9 minutes (from 'evocation to the end of 'solar goddess return') you are released into a two part conclusion or 'come down' if you like...and then you want to start it all over again!

I will add that 41 minutes really flies by in what seems like moments listening to this...I wish it was longer... or another piece of music added to the disc. Great introduction for me. Anyone buying now will get it at the Black Friday price (I missed that offer by a day). Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Durch die Klangoberfläche in den Gefühlssee
Reviewed in Germany on August 30, 2024
