Better for me than their traveler model

Better for me than their traveler model
After waiting eight months for this product, I was overwhelmed with impatience. Holding off writing for that long was disheartening and frustrating. The long wait beside, the Alpha is great! The feel of the keyboard is nice and using it in my lap was easier than with the traveler (Freewrite’s other model), which was almost too difficult to write that way (I made it work). The keys are sunken in, so you have to press harder than you might first think. I was missing letters as I was typing, but as I got used to it, pressing harder became natural, and the text showed up as intended. The wrist rest made this my preference before I even received it. The angled kickstand on the back made the angle of the screen just right, although the actual screen itself was difficult to see. There was either glare or the words didn’t have enough contrast from the background, but with proper lighting, it was fine. I stuck with the medium text size and got three lines on the small screen to work with. You can switch to smaller or larger font by holding the power button down. I was thinking the compromise of a small screen for more wrist space would be too great, the screen too small to see or use, but it was plenty, and actually made me zone in more on just the words at hand. It kept me writing longer and made it easier to focus on the thought I was getting out. I thought I’d miss the bigger screen, and the mini stat window (like on the traveler), but the hidden info was easy to pull up by holding the space bar for a couple seconds, and limited the distraction that having that info at the ready created. Before, on their traveler model, I’d be checking again and again to see if I had met my word count goal or time goal. I know the traveler allows a change of the info on screen, but not having it obviously viewable with the Alpha made me just write, and I actually got more written on this than the traveler.I love this device but I’m not sure why it was marketed as a ‘beginner’ device. This thing gets the words out as good, or better than their other devices. The one thing that bothered me was the lag that often showed up (much better than the traveler) which I think is due to the device saving and syncing with postbox (freewrite’s syncing website) . One of the reasons this device appealed to me was the speed the text showed on screen. Instant response was a goal I missed while using the traveler. The delay was mostly easily overlooked and the response was nicer than the traveler. There will definitely be updates of the firmware soon to address this.I love the look of the device. I got the raven black and it’s great. The feel of plastic is maybe not as nice as metal, but not a dealbreaker for me. That stuff lasts a long time. It didn’t feel too cheap, but the lower price point was a draw that hooked me. I think I may change the keys out at some later point, but it’s not an immediate need. I will definitely get some good writing done with this device and I am enjoying the process so far. Maybe worth the wait, but I hope the delays on future products will be handled better. Maybe Freewrite needs a more realistic goal when putting new devices out there. After eight months of delays, I was thinking I’d never get it, but it came through. This company is very friendly to users and are very attentive as well. I had a few emails exchanged in the past, and they solved my issues with prompt responses.I am glad they sent a felt sleeve case for free. That was a good gift to assuage the pain of a long wait. It is nice and well made of course. I wish the whole case was felt rather than adding a small amount of leather. I am allergic to leather so I may have to avoid using it. A screen protector that limits glare would be a nice addition.

I have been waiting several years to find the right kind of distraction free writing experience. Something that would remove my internal editor and simply allow me to create. I have a TBI so I easily get distracted on the internet. I have tried using typewriters, but I have found that they are only good for quick writing like a poem. It became laborious to undertake a more lengthy piece of prose. I have tried longhand with both pen and pencil but likewise found that I was too distracted getting everything ready and just right, only to have to sharpen a pencil or refill the ink. I have tried a mechanical keyboard with an iPad, but was unable to take it anywhere with me. When I came across Astrohaus and their Freewrite, I knew I didn't have the funds to afford the original, but was excited when they came out with the Alpha. After getting it and trying it out, I am happy to say that this device finally gives me the writing experience that I have been looking for and has already boosted my productivity. The firmware update fixed all of the bugs and now my documents are syncing to the computer. If you are looking for a typewriter that will fit the 21st century modern world, then this device is your "type."

I returned this and bought a traveler from the company instead. They were offering a free carry case and the traveler has extra buttons on it. Suits my needs better.

The feel and the sounds are that of something I’ve never truly lived but something I know so well: the analog-button feel of an old keyboard—the kind that pairs perfectly with a trackball mouse. It gives you the retro feels and intentionality. I don’t just love this; I love that those under freewrite took the risk others either can’t afford or don’t care about, when it comes to the needs of potential customers. And hey, Freewrite, even if you can’t have all my money, you’ve earned my full respect. 🫡

I was really, really thrilled for this thing. After losing writing on an Alphasmart Neo, the promise of easy WiFi back-up was extremely exciting.

First night: I wrote a ton! Turned the WiFi on to sync. And!

Rebooted, factory reset. All writing wiped. Crushing.

So, I tried to update the firmware. Tried dozens of times on different network. Didn't work. Tried a manual factory reset.

Finally, the firmware updated. Only now the device is stuck with a new, almost illegible font. The creators promise a better font is coming, but it's been three months. Can this thing really not hold two fonts in its firmware at once? How rudimentary is the internal hardware?

Finally, if I back up even a *single* line, the device slows to a crawl. I can rapidly type out a dozen words and sit and watch as letter s l o w l y move across the screen. Not only that, 60% of the keystrokes don't register.

Not looking to do extensive editing here, but that's unacceptable. This device only needs to do two things: write, and not lose that writing. It's repeatedly failed at both.

Customer service service insists nothing is wrong and that I should just hard reset my device. Of course I've tried that, and unfortunately, it does nothing.

Sad and disappointed. Oh well - at least I'm in the return window. Maybe the 2.0 will be more functional, but until then approach with caution.

I love the feel of the mechanical keyboard! It’s almost springy to the touch and makes for a very enjoyable typing experience. As soon as I got my Alpha, my word count went way up. It’s light and portable so it’s very easy to take it to different rooms in my house, taking it to a cafe to write, and even writing in bed. I highly recommend this to any writer experiencing writer’s block. This device makes you want to write more!

Let me start of by saying this is well designed in every aspect and will hold up for years, if not decades.
HOWEVER, it is indeed a niche product that is WAY to expensive for its function. You'd be better served buying a cheap iPad and bluetooth keyboard for the same price.
If you're wanting something for distraction-free writing, I recommend a bluetooth keyboard and your phone with notifications turned off.
Don't get me wrong, this is a great product, but it is definitely a luxury item that is overpriced. I could recommend it if it was around $200, but at over $350, look for another alternative.

It’s bigger that I expected. The Keyboard is really big but it has a nice sound.
