What Makes a Garden: A considered approach to garden design Hardcover – 19 Oct. 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
' A future classic...' Gardening Book of the Year, Garden Media Guild Awards 2024
'One of the year’s most engrossing, thought-provoking books’ The English Garden
A reflective book by Jinny Blom (author of The Thoughtful Garden), one of the world’s leading garden designers.
What Makes a Garden builds upon the work of The Thoughtful Garden, giving a broader idea of how Jinny thinks about garden design. In particular it emphasizes her multi-disciplinary approach, which embraces architecture, conservation and art, coupled with a strong holistic thread.
This fascinating and insightful book looks at how a garden should please all five senses; how it is an alchemical mix of the inanimate and the living; and also how it has to accommodate both the effects of time and the influences of culture.
This is not intended as a book of rules but rather a way of thinking about garden design and making sure it responds to the particularities of place, the culture and the demands of the client. Drawing on her work and experience over the last 20 years or so, the book gets to the heart of what people want and need from a garden and what makes it different from a natural landscape.
Reflecting Jinny‘s highly individual approach to garden design, the book is filled with warmth and character alongside her expert knowledge. With a broad appeal, this beautiful book is for all garden lovers: thoughtful yet practical and informative, it marries artistry with functionality.

Product description
Review
'A wunderkammer of a book: so rich and idiosyncratic, its teeming ideas grounded in experience and experiment.'
-- Olivia Laing
"While the information is extremely useful and helpful, the photography and gorgeous pictures will immediately take your attention, inspiring you to do even more with your garden. As a philosophical art book on gardening, it is a unique experience enjoyable for anyone who loves nature, even if they are new to gardening." -- Susan Bewley ― Budget Earth
"What Makes A Garden is about the myriad elements to consider when creating a garden. The book is inclusive of so many disciplines and ideas, and so full of fascinating and useful factoids...Blom is hoping the book helps us expand our own minds regarding what belongs in a garden besides the obvious visual appeal of flowers, or the practical use of vegetables. She invites us into her world, where every detail is thoughtfully considered, and its history told"

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 November 2023I thoroughly enjoyed this book page after page. Full of incredible photography and insightful thoughts and facts about what makes a garden. Have bought it for everyone for Christmas. 10/10
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 December 2023This book is brimming with larger than life personalities - Jinny's, her many collaborators and the sumptuous gardens that result. It also takes you back to basics and the raw materials of her craft. Having given up biology at the earliest opportunity due to an aversion to sheep's lungs I can now finally fill in some of the gaps. Is a mushroom a plant? What is a garden? A wonderful, whimsical read!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 November 2024I'm not as blown away by this book as several of the other reviewers. It's nice, but it's nothing in comparison to the books by Sarah Raven, Erin Benzakein, Carol Klein, Monty Don.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 November 2023What an extraordinary book by a truly exceptional creator and thinker. There is so much in its gorgeous, witty pages to delight, fascinate and provoke. This is a book about gardens but also art, philosophy and pleasure. The author encompasses an astonishing range of ideas and makes some really original connections. What other garden book would devote an entire page to a picture of Dolly Parton and it make wonderful sense?
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2023A beautifully written book, full of insightful thoughts on the artistic, esthetic, anthorpological and practical elements and processes behind creating and defining a garden, highlighting the immemorial relation between mankind and nature.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 December 2023I am so impressed with Jinnys latest creation - utterly unputdownable - informative inspiring exquisitely beautiful and extremely personal - I feel I know her reading this and can recommend this to experts novices and all of us in between ……please read this fabulous book
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 December 2023This is so much more than your usual garden book. Started reading it and couldn’t put it down. Very witty as well as informative on so many levels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written personal book from one of the world's best garden designers
This book could not have been written by anyone else. Although it is a detailed run down of all the aspects worth considering when making a garden, it is inter-weaved with so many of Jinny's personal anecdotes, life experiences, throughts and very much opinions too, which I love.
I absolutely loved it!
As someone who has been a fan of Jinny's for many years now (and I am a garden photographer myself, thus a very visual human being), and who go back to her first book again and again, if there is one tiny thing that forces me to subtract a star it is that I simply love her work SO much that I miss more photos of her own great creations.
But this book is an interesting and important thought process from an amazing designer

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Refreshing
Jinny's second book is an engaging dive into the philosophical underpinnings of every garden, no matter its size or style. I adored the garden profiles in her first book, and I so appreciate her thoughtful approach in general. There are many garden designer books that are all about perfectly finished projects. This book is less about gorgeous photos (though there are those) and more about ideas and process. Jinny is funny! Anyone who is interested in anthropology, gardens, or both, will chuckle their way through the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful
I find this woman to have read my heart. She is incredibly insightful. She says about covid. " the collective unconscious spoke. We discovered we don't like being in cities anything like as much as we thought. We crave sweet fresh air in our lungs" Absolutely incredible. She is incredible in her insight.
