Midtown West, New York City

Park Hyatt New York

Modern Midtown pied-à-terre

What it is

Residential-style luxury with an understated look, in the heart of Midtown.

What it isn't

A hotel with unobstructed views: it's surrounded by other buildings.

What we think

New Yorkers have taken to calling this stretch of 57th Street "BIllionaire's Row," thanks to the parade of super-tall condos with record-shattering prices. But non-members of the billionaires' club can get a taste of the high life, thanks to the Park Hyatt that opened on the street in 2014. Designers Yabu Pushelberg took inspiration from an imaginary client: well-heeled, well-traveled New Yorkers who enjoy collecting art. The resulting look is understated yet elegant: black and gray granite, bronze screens, and works by Richard Serra, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt and others. In the 210 rooms, space is abundant (480 square feet and up) and the palette is neutral; we love the minibars hidden in leather trunks, the Le Labo bath products and the generous and well-lighted working desks. The 13,000-square-foot Spa Nalaï is gorgeous (check out the apartment-sized spa suites) and there's a grand indoor pool with views across to Carnegie Hall.

You're here because

Your itinerary leans slightly to the west, and you prefer the contemporary residential style here to the more classic look of other Midtown luxury hotels.

The Moment

Diving into the 25th-floor pool, you hear the unmistakable strains of Beethoven's Eroica symphony—thanks to neighbor Carnegie Hall, which provides the soundtrack for the underwater speakers.
