Anantara Chiang Mai Resort

Serene urban resort

What it is

A contemporary resort on the edge of the Mae Ping River in Chiang Mai’s city center.

What it isn't

Located in Chiang Mai’s famous walled Old City (though it’s an easy, mile-long stroll or tuk-tuk ride away).

What we think

You’ll feel like you’re anywhere but the middle of a bustling Thai city when you’re on the green grounds of this sleek, waterfront resort. A duo of thick doors protects against street noise, and the lobby’s sunken living rooms overlook peaceful reflecting pools. Throughout the resort, the décor is Asian-inspired and serenely minimalist. In the 84 rooms, guests shed their shoes in private mud rooms before walking through a second door into the large and luxurious spaces with balconies, separate seating areas and deep soaking tubs. Many overlook the lush grounds and possibly the lap pool, lined with teak chaises, that parallels the Mae Ping River. Pathways cut through neatly trimmed grass to a restored colonial house that once the British Consulate and now contains a library outfitted with wood-paneled walls and plantation shutters. It’s one of the best spots to enjoy an exotic fruit-infused cocktail like the sweet Mangosteeni, made with Ketel One vodka and aromatic mangosteen fruit. Guests can dine here or at The Restaurant, which serves international plates (a Wagyu tomahawk steak) at the water’s edge, as well as specialties prepared by the Indian chef, like saffron mussels and sea bass marinated in yogurt and turmeric.

You're here because

You appreciate a quiet respite in contemporary surroundings after busy days filled with temple and market tours.

The Moment

Relaxing in your robe on your terrace, sipping a French press coffee and scooping the tangy seeds out of a passion fruit, while watching the morning boat traffic go by.
