The Royal Hawaiian

A Luxury Collection Hotel

What it is

A nostalgic charmer on the most coveted stretch of Waikiki Beach.

What it isn't

A collection bohemian bungalows.

What we think

One of the first hotels to pop up on Waikiki Beach, the Pink Palace of the Pacific has a long and storied history: its first guests back in 1927 were wealthy Americans dropped off by Matson steamships, it housed WWII sailors on R&R leave and it’s popped up in everything from Charlie’s Angels to Mad Men. Today, the pink Spanish-Moorish giant is in top shape. Its legendary facade has been fastidiously maintained to keep up the original appearance. Following 2009’s major, $85 million overhaul, the grounds and interiors are under constant, albeit subtle and discreet, upgrading. Throughout the 528 rooms and suites, the sprawling Abhasa spa, the bevy of dining choices and right down to the fleet cabana boys ready to swiftly accept any request at the pools, there’s a distinct old world charm. The resort, of course, mixes all the modern comforts in with its tradition elements. Four poster beds and ornate wallcoverings recall the old opulence of Hawai’i during the time steamers were still carrying guests, but the clutter-less design plans, the local organic soaps and wifi make sure guests have this century’s luxuries as well. Of course, the scene outside the windows is the real show stealer. The lanai’s that jut out from the oceanfront rooms are perfect for toasting mai tais at sunset.

You're here because

The classic hotel does it right: it’s luxurious in every detail, it has heaps of nostalgic charm, and it's fully loaded with all the modern perks.

The Moment

The kids are at their surf lesson - you lean back on the pink and white striped lounge chair and lower your sunglasses to look out at the sparkling Pacific Ocean. A Pool Concierge trots over to your poolside cabana with a basket of breakfast goodies and the sun hat you’d asked for.

Restaurants & Bars

Surf Lanai - Indulge in a casual dining experience in the breezy restaurant that features light breakfast and lunch menus of American fare and island cuisine.

Azure - Enjoy fresh seafood at the jewel-toned restaurant, perched along the Waikiki beachfront under the canopy of resort’s dramatic Spanish - Moorish architecture.

The Royal Hawaiian Luau - Aha'Aina is an epicurean journey through time, to honor the land’s majestic history through food, song, stories, hula, and culture, a true celebration of The Royal and its heritage.

Mai Tai Bar - Dine under the stars in a private beachfront cabana or at the bar, watching the sunset while sipping an organic cocktail.

Location

The Royal Hawaiian is on the southern shores of O’ahu, at the apex of Waikiki Beach’s arc. It’s only a half hour to Pearl Harbor and a 20-25 minute car ride to and from Honolulu’s international airport.
