Parador de Santiago de Compostela

Pilgrim’s Paradise

What it is

A former pilgrims’ hospital built in 1499 that’s just as restorative today.

What it isn't

Tech-forward. Yes, it has electricity now, but don’t expect an iPad in every room; you’re here to soak up the history.

What we think

The first ten Way of St. James pilgrims that cross the Parador’s doorstep every morning get a gratis lunch—as they have since 1499. That tells you something about this hotel’s heartfelt hospitality and its history-steeped traditions. With exteriors graced by intricate granite carvings and 137 antique-laden rooms—many set around the four manicured interior courtyards—you’ll feel like you’re in a scene from 1967’s Camelot. But ultimately, this hotel is notable for what it lacks: a spa, pool, gym….all more than made up for by the bucket list experience of simply being there, in a centuries-old spiritual mecca.

You're here because

Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II once slept here. And nobody makes pilgrimages to chain hotels.

The Moment

Down in the subterranean Restaurante dos Reis, you have trouble taking your eyes off the cathedral-worthy vaulted stone ceilings—that is, until the octopus arrives.
